Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be contained in a 45 cm by 11 cm by 6.5 cm case. The walls of the room containing SCP-XXXX are to be painted red.
Audio recordings of SCP-XXXX are prohibited.
Pursuant to the Foundation's Lateran Concordat, access to SCP-XXXX must be provided to any member of the Roman Catholic Church's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith1 (CDF) holding the rank of Cardinal, any member of the CDF accompanying a Cardinal, or any member of the CDF with written approval of the CDF Prefect.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a wooden flute measuring approximately 27 cm in length.
SCP-XXXX's anomalous effects manifest when played. The primary effect of SCP-XXXX impacts any human subject that hears the sounds generated by SCP-XXXX. Subjects are referred to as SCP-XXXX-1 while under this effect. Instances of SCP-XXXX-1 experience lowered inhibitions and are less inclined to conform to social norms. SCP-XXXX-1 instances will react violently to individuals wearing red clothing and will attempt to forcibly remove said clothing.
The exact behavior of SCP-XXXX-1 varies, though most instances exhibit some form of dancing. Other recorded acts include jumping, singing, crying, laughing, self-harm, and various forms of lewd behavior.
SCP-XXXX's secondary effect impacts any human subject who plays the instrument. While playing, subjects are referred to as SCP-XXXX-2. Instances of SCP-XXXX-2 have a strong desire to continue playing and are resistant to the primary effect of SCP-XXXX. When exposed to individuals wearing red, SCP-XXXX-2 instances will attempt to evade or hide from these individuals.
SCP-XXXX's effects cease when SCP-XXXX-2 stops playing, though they have been recorded to take up to several hour to completely dissipate. Instances of SCP-XXXX-1 may escape the effects by leaving the area in which SCP-XXXX is audible.
The ability of subjects to resist the effects of SCP-XXXX decreases with continued exposure. The ability to resist is increased by exposure to the color red, with the prior noted exception of red clothing. Subjects who are unable or unwilling to resist the effects of SCP-XXXX will continue to engage in the aforementioned behaviors as long as they are physically capable of doing so. Most subjects in recorded incidents involving SCP-XXXX recover after losing consciousness. A minority of subjects have died due to the physical impact of their actions.
SCP-XXXX and related documentation were among the items transferred to Foundation facilities in 1929 following the Lateran Concordat between the Foundation and the Holy See.
The earliest confirmed incident involving the use of SCP-XXXX is dated to 1374 CE, in Aachen, Holy Roman Empire. Other confirmed incidents are dated to 1428 and 1518. Research is ongoing into similar incidents in Scotland and Madagascar, though no confirmed association with SCP-XXXX has been found at this time.
