Item #: SCP-222

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: No special containment is required for SCP-222. It also cannot be moved. The site is guarded by SCP Foundation personnel as well as a rotating staff, which includes US, Italian, and NATO soldiers (none of whom are aware of its significance). Foundation personnel visits the site very often, disguised as top-level-soldiers, and their true numbers are carefully hidden from the soldiers (and usually from D-class-personnel and also clone-personnel).

Description: SCP-222 are two coffins inside a tunnel area designates a tunnel area in the Dolomites near Aviano, Italy. The site is near the church of St. Gregory and the Aviano airbase is also nearby. The tunnels are filled with coffins carved into a stone-like material. The walls of the tunnels are made of this material and drillings showed that the material is four (4) meters thick. This " stone" was determined to be " stone-like" because it does not resemble any other terrestrial stone on earth and it contains traces of a completely unknown element. Two coffins (referred to as SCP-222-1 and SCP-222-2 in the further course of the file) in particular have unusual traits, and part of the tunnels are also affected. The carvings in the tunnels appear to be very old and of fairly good workmanship.

After 1948, US agents in Italy who participated in Operation Gladio received the first indications of unusual activities at this location. In 1954, the Aviano airbase was handed over to NATO.

On 22 February 1955, Foundation staff found a series of tunnels dug into the mountains. Apparently, they were catacombs (tunnels for storing the dead); the archaeological research on their construction yielded contradictory results. (See #SCP-222-7 to -9.) The tunnels were used as a hiding place by a terrorist sect. All members of the sect were killed or taken into custody. The sect appeared to be mentally less stable and more aggressive than most of these organizations, but otherwise unobtrusive. However, details that emerged during the operation and later experiments gave rise to further investigation.

Once the nature and capabilities of the site had been determined, it became one of the most frequently used and visited sites under the care of the Foundation.

As previously stated, two coffins in the tunnels have unusual properties. (See #SCP-222-06 for summation of all tests done to date and clarification of items below.)

If a living person is placed into SCP-222-1 and it is closed, the following sequence of events occurs.

  • Within 15 minutes, the subject falls asleep.

* The subject will fall asleep under any circumstances; such as, but not limited to, being in the middle of a claustrophobic fit, or being given amounts of caffeine and amphetamines close to causing an overdose.

  • The subject sleeps for 1-2 hours.
    • Opening the coffin during this time usually results in the death of the occupant and no further results.
  • The subject wakes up, feeling well-rested.
    • The subject will not fall asleep until the coffin is opened again. The possibility of sleep deprivation research has been advanced but not yet implemented.
  • Within 24 hours, a person will be found within the tunnels who is a duplicate, or clone, of the occupant.
    • No attempts to find the origin of the clone within the tunnels have ever been successful. The clone invariably finds its way to the coffin, though it usually appears to be wandering aimlessly. (Read #SCP-222-11 for precise examples.)

If an object is placed into SCP-222-2 and it is closed, the following sequence of events occurs:

  • After 15 minutes a click-sound signals that SCP-222-2 can be opened to remove the original object.
    • SCP-222-2 closes itself again after it is empty again.
  • The "clone-time" varies depending on the complexity of the object and how the coffin changes its properties (read #SCP-222-21 for precise examples.) The shortest period of time was two minutes, the longest was 23 hours

Clones created by SCP-222-1 appear in all physical respects to be identical to their originals, though dressed in tattered rags of unknown origin. Man-made objects are not duplicated with SCP-222-1 (SCP-222-2 can´t duplicate living beings); the cloning process of SCPP-222-1 is not recommended for occupants with tooth fillings or pacemakers. Clones can (but not must) possess the same lifespan and medical conditions as their originals. If the foundation manages to combine the two coffins further experiments will show if things like pacemakers are working as good as the originals inside the cloned human body.

One of the unusual and harmless aspects of a cloned human is its mind. Clones can´t remember the last 24 hours of the original. Languages are fine, along with all physical and mental skills. While clones remember any people or events, they don´t feel any emotional connection to them (it´s different for pets) and they appear to retain their ethical beliefs and loyalties, and thus can usually be quickly re-indoctrinated into Foundation personnel. Security procedures must be retrained, but combat and weapon skills are preserved. There is a chance that the clone of an old or sick person (or other living beings) come out healthy and much younger.

In the beginning, it was assumed that the cloned objects are almost the same as the originals. If a broken/malfunctioning object is cloned, it can also come out new and without that malfunction – it was believed, that this was it. With Example #1 and especially #2 it was revealed that SCP-222-2 can add positive and negative traits and not just increase or decrease existing traits in objects – as SCP-222-1 did with clones of persons.

Note: Examples #1 and #2 of the SCP-222-2-experiments aren´t the first two experiments. Example #1 is experiment number 42 and example #2 is experiment number 69.

The dangerous side-effects of SCP-222-1 and -2: Before using the coffins, personnel have to ALWAYS keep in mind that there are negative side-effects. The foundation discovered these effects after a few months of experimentation. The two coffins share these effects. If a person or object is cloned a random number of positive and negative attributes are slightly changed – these numbers are in balance (if two positive attributes are changed, two negative attributes are changed too). The maximum changes we discovered were ten (10) per "side"! If for example, one person is a bit aggressive, the chances are high that the clone will be more aggressive.
Many Foundation personnel has been successfully cloned with SCP-222 and without major negative side-effects, providing a loyal workforce for Foundation initiatives. Obviously, it is one of our most useful items.

Addendum: Warning #1:

Under all circumstances don´t place other SCP-objects in one of the two coffins. The cloned Euclid object could come out as a Keter. The foundation can´t risk that.

The following is a censored (in regards to swearing) transcript of a memo from Dr. Eobard Drawn: "It came to my ears, that some of you want to put SCP-999 in SCP-222-1. Are you that f-ing stupid? Sure, it could come out even cuter, more fun and more ticklish. But with the overdose of f-ing sweetness of the original, the coffin will turn the copy with some minor positive traits and some huge negative traits into a f-ing steaming pile of sh-t. This SCP-Object is clever. It knows what to do to create the most damage. Sure, some clones are fine and maybe even nicer than the original. It´s a damn bait. If there is a copy of 999 with acid on the outside one day, just do me a favor and, for fk sake, give it a big hug, ok?"

Addendum: Warning #2:

Don´t use SCP-222-1 as a "youth fountain" for your senior pets. The younger clone can be more aggressive or blood-thirsty. Remember Incident #222-1-1!

Addendum: Numeration of documents

Documents only referring to SCP-222-1 are numbered like this: Document #SCP-222-1X. When the number of documents rise over #SCP-222-19, the document after this end with -110 and so on.

Documents only referring to SCP-222-2 are numbered like this: Document #SCP-222-2X. And it is to be continued in a similar way as documents for SCP-222-1.

Documents referring to both coffins and other things regarding the surroundings of SCP-222 are numbered like this: Document #SCP-222-0X. And it is to be continued in a similar way as documents for SCP-222-1 and -2.

Addendum: Document #SCP-222-11: Detailed experiments with SCP-222-1

  • Clone-Experiment-Example #1
    • Person to be cloned: Dr. Eobard Drawn, 78 years old and one of the brilliant lead-scientists who works on SCP-222.

* Positive side-effects:
*Dr. Drawns clone was younger. He seems to be around 30 with the health of Dr. Drawns in that age, but with all the memories and knowledge of the original up to things he learned just a few days before cloning.
* Testing proves the clone is smarter than the original.
*The clone doesn´t have asthma.

  • Negative Side-effects:

*Because Dr. Drawn had a problem with aggression and was abusive towards his ex-wife during the marriage, the clone showed a higher aggression-level.
*The clone showed more racism. Most of the staff around Dr. Drawn didn´t even know, he was a bit racist.
*The clone turned out to be a sweet tooth and gained a lot of weight over the next few months.

  • Clone-Experiment-Example #2

* Person to be cloned: D-Class-Personal Richard Dune, 56, an ex-prisoner. He is a convicted pedophile, with the age-and-sex-preference of 9- to 12-year-old girls.

* Positive side-effects:
* His aggression-level dropped significantly.
* The clone wasn´t into the idea of sexual-abuse girls in real life, but the clone still liked to fantasize about it.

* Negative-side-effects:
* His age-preference dropped by two years
*His intelligence dropped from a bit over average to average.

* Notice: Thinking about a "second-gen-clone" from his clone to see, if a clone can lose the fantasies about his unethical sexual preference, too. The original got terminated.

  • Clone-Experiment #3

* Person to be cloned: The corpse of the D-Class from Experiment #2
*Nothing happened. It is assumed that SCP-222-1 doesn´t recognize dead people as "living beings". The experiment will be repeated with SCP-222-2.

Addendum: Document #SCP-222-12: Indoctrination Issues

Lieutenant █████ ████████'s clone was brought to a mockup KGB indoctrination center where he was brainwashed into becoming a "KGB spy". He was a native of the USSR, so this was considered a useful test of a clone's attitudes. The clone eventually rebelled against the brainwashing and was prepared to die rather than submit. At that point, the "training exercise" was ended and he was welcomed as a loyal Foundation member.

However, ██████ █. ██████'s clone was given a standard indoctrination, but it rebelled and proclaimed allegiance to an Afghan terrorist group. It was terminated, and questioning of the original ██████ █. ██████ revealed that the beliefs had been copied, but the clones' beliefs are more extreme. It turned out that the original ██████ █. ██████ was more of a sympathizer to that group, but he is loyal to the Foundation. The clone got terminated and the original is under surveillance.

Addendum: Document #SCP-222-13: Call for clone psychiatric/sociological analysis

General ████████ maintains that cloned personnel display behavior patterns and habits that cannot be accounted for by simple amnesia. He cites a statistically significant higher incidence of mental illness, particularly homicidal tendencies, among clones when compared to "original" personnel.

Addendum: Document #SCP-222-14: "Second generation" Clones
Clones may themselves be cloned, though records show this has only been performed twice. The "second generation" clones were observed to have marked mental differences: both were resistant to indoctrination, and Foundation psychiatrists returned a diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder. However, intelligence and mental ability were measured at equal to or greater than the original clones' (or even the originals'). Further investigation is warranted.

The positive and negative effects "stack" if a clone is cloned again. This led to the rule, that no "second-generation clone" should be cloned again!

Addendum: Document #SCP-222-15: "Clonedex"

███ ███████ has called for an effort to catalog all "good" clones in Foundation employ and the verification of the locations of each of them, as there appear to be consistent reports that the Foundation has more personnel than is recorded.

Addendum: Document #SCP-222-17: Clone Approval Orders

By order of O5-2, all cloning activities must be recorded with a work order and must be approved by non-clone personnel of at least clearance 4.

Addendum: Document #SCP-222-18: Clone Identification

As a result of the nearly successful Site ██ takeover attempt by the clone of General ████████ wherein [DATA EXPUNGED], all current and future clones have to get three identification-implants in random spots under anesthesia. If one of the implants is gone, the clone must be terminated.

Addendum: Document #SCP-222-21: detailed experiments with SCP-222-2

  • Clone-Experiment-Example #1:

* Object to be cloned: a typical slightly worn-out Rubik's Cube (unsolved)

* Positive side-effects:
* The copy wasn´t worn-out at all. It came out brand-new (but still unsolved) out of the coffin.

* Negative side-effects:
* If you are trying to solve it and you make a turn without getting nearer to solving it, it shocked the D-Class, who tried to solve it, with 7500 volts whenever he made a wrong turn.

  • Clone-Experiment-Example #2:

* Object to be cloned: a defect iPhone 3G with a fully shattered screen.

* Positive side-effects:
* The copy isn´t defect like the original and the screen is intact.
* The memory capacity of the copy is 500 GB, which far exceeds even current models (as of 2019) of the brand.
* Although the camera is better in theory, the fact that it is still an iPhone 3G means that the necessary programming to exploit this potential is missing. And no, you can't upgrade it to the latest software version because it is still only compatible up to software version IOS 4.2.1.
* If a person touches the phone, the person gets automatically logged in into every social media account he owns (the app needs to be installed on the copy.) and the contacts of the person will automatically get copied on the phone.

  • Negative side-effects
      • Every 15 minutes it will post a random picture of the gallery on every social media account, the current user own.
      • The phone will send random messages to your contacts. It will either use SMS or a messenger-app if one if installed. These messages are typically either rude, sexual or contain untrue or true gossip of acquaintances.
      • If the user tries to listen to music, it will only play the least favorite song of the user.
  • Clone-Experiment-Example #3

* Object to be cloned: The corpse of a D-class, which participated in an experiment for SCP-222-1 when alive

* Positive side-effects:
* The clone seems to be alive, but in a coma – or (as the coffin seems the corpse as an object) he is fully functional, but on standby.

* Negative side-effects:
* The skin of the copy is covered in acid mucus, which doesn´t affect his skin or the stone-like material of the coffin or the tunnels. The acidic mucus is about as acidic as hydrochloric acid. It was decided to transport and store it in one of the coffins, which doesn´t have any abilities, until it – or he – gets activated.

* Neutral side-effects
* The copy has a key-hole, which isn´t surrounded or covered by mucus. It seems a key is needed to wind it up like some toys have or had it.

* Note: The category "neutral side-effects" was introduced because the side-effect couldn´t be classified "negative" or "positive". If a key is found and can activate it, a re-classification will be made. It remains to be seen whether it will have other positive and negative side effects after activation.

*Addendum: Incident #222-1-1:** The cloned pet dog.

The dog of the mobile task force commander ██████████ ██████ was estimated to die of old age within the next few days. He decided to take the chance and visited SCP-222 at night, with his dog anesthetized under a blanket. He puts him in the coffin and waited until he could safely remove him from the coffin and then left with his senior dog.
Survivors of the incident, which happened the next day, described that they had been attacked by a big rabid wolf. The original dog was a long-haired dachshund. There is no trace of the "big rabid wolf" so far. The Foundation assumes that SCP-222-1 has a more extreme effect on non-human living beings.

Note: The commander has been removed from his position.

Addendum: Document #222-01: Discoveries regarding the "stone" inside the tunnels.
Recently the Foundation found out that the stone-like material inside the cave is sentient, grows and can change into other materials if it wants to. With this new-found knowledge, the Foundation managed to come close to finding out how the clone-process works and where the materials for the clones come from. But it brings up the question if the coffins (or the whole tunnel-system) are planning something with the clones and if the foundation shouldn´t classify the catacombs as SCP-222 and not just the coffins.

Note: The re-classification of what SCP-222 is, has been approved and was corrected in the file.
