Item #: SCP-3342
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-3342 must remain locked inside a secure container within Site-19, with its bob tightly clamped onto a level surface with said clamp being bolted to the bottom of the container. The container must under no circumstances be tipped by an angle from the ground to avoid the risk of SCP-3342's pendulum being displaced by a small distance. During testing periods, the container that holds SCP-3342 must be carefully loaded onto a utility cart for moving.
Experimentation on SCP-3342 that involves displacing its pendulum must be approved by the current overseeing researcher. It is mandatory that said tests be done in a closed room at least 200 metres away from the facility
Description: SCP-3342 is a standard pendulum for simple physics demonstrations consisting of a wooden stand, a steel base, a rod, and a clamp, as well as a painted yellow plastic bob. The materials comprising SCP-3342 are, as far as testing has shown, not anomalous in nature themselves and susceptible to environmental factors as any object. The underside of the stand has the logo of the ███████████ Institute of Science etched into it.
SCP-3342's anomalous properties are manifested when the bob of the pendulum is displaced by any angle from its resting position, when this occurs, rather than the pendulum rotating, the largest continuous surface on which the stand rests will instead be rotated in the opposite direction by the same number of degrees. When the pendulum is released, the surface will appear to "swing" back and forth in opposite direction to the pendulum. This causes the pendulum of the bob to stay completely stationary no matter how much it is displaced.
Upon displacement, the surface on which the stand rests will be completely torn apart from its surroundings and forced to rotate against the pendulum's motion. Since only the largest continuous surface is affected, this property will only affect the floor of a room with substantial structural damage to its surroundings. The range of this effect is unknown, and an experiment proposed by Dr. █████ involving displacing the pendulum upon the salt flat located in ████, USA has been denied due to the possible dangerous nature of the experiment.
Addendum 3342-001: SCP-3342 was originally discovered in ████, ███████ when a building was reported to have collapsed after the entire property's foundation as well as a street connected to it was upended, having reportedly been lifted upwards by an unknown force. The object was removed from the ruins of the establishment after being found on the person of a corpse identified to be Dr. ████████. Class-B amnesiacs were administered to local witnesses.
Probes into the origin of SCP-3342 led to a research project done by an institute in ███████████ that concerned with the creation of a perpetual-motion pendulum. The project was interrupted when the section of the institute where the project was being done collapsed completely with the research group inside, leading to the death of the entire team aside from the project head and the cancellation of the project, after the disappearance of the project head.
Multiple weeks later after the project's failure, reports of earthquakes with unusually regular seismic wave readings began to appear in the local area around the institute as well as neighboring towns and cities. These events were brought to the foundation's attention by agents stationed in the area and foundation agents disguised as a rescue team were sent to the most recent area affected by said earthquakes, leading to the discovery of SCP-3342 on Dr. ████████'s corpse
