SCP-5070

The Melting Well

Item SCP-5070

Also Known As: The Melting Well

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5070 is to be locked in a three (3) meter cubed windowless room, made of concrete or any other non-metal material.

Description: SCP-5070 is comprised of old stone, dating back to 1000 BC. It's well is roughly two (2) meters deep and is filled with water, designated SCP-5070-1. Notably, when Foundation staff attempted to dig out the whole well, there was nothing underneath the surface. This made transportation easy, as only the surface component of the well needed to be moved.

SCP-5070 provides access to SCP-5070-1. The water that can be found in the well, is normal water, until it comes into contact with anything with metal components. That includes any materials that have even the smallest quantities of metal. The effect that SCP-5070-1 has on metals are akin to that of highly corrosive acid. SCP-5070-1 can melt through any metal, but leave any other materials completely unharmed, if a tad wet. SCP-5070 and SCP-5070-1 are classified as 'safe' due to the fact that they don't pose any threat to humans, or really, anything other than metal.

Addendum 1: SCP-5070 was discovered in a town in the Midlands, UK. It was initially buried under a flood plain, but was recently found by the local council renovating the area for building. It's anomalous properties were discovered when a workman dropped his toolbox which fell into the well. The workman attempted to reach into SCP-5070 to retrieve his toolbox, but could not reach the bottom. Further attempts were made to retrieve the toolbox, and the workman was successful as the toolbox itself was made of plastic, however upon opening the toolbox, he discovered all the metal components of his tools were completely gone. It came to the Foundation's attention after a newspaper article was published regarding "The Melting Well".

Addendum 2: Any none Foundation personnel were issued with a mild amnestic. The event was quickly forgotten as Foundation staff removed SCP-5070 before any other journalists were able to see it. The initial article has been written off as a hoax.

The following is an interview with the workman who came into contact with SCP-5070-1, shortly before an amnestic was provided;

Interviewed: Mr. Lyle ██████

Interviewer: Dr. Lee █████
Foreword: Mr. ██████ was compliant with Foundation staff, and provided some information on the area SCP-6001 was found in before the recorded interview (See notes).

Lee: Mr. ██████, thank you for helping us figure this out. would you like a drink?

Lyle: No, I'm good. So what is it you want to know exactly?

Lee: I want to know exactly what happened a few days ago when you found the well.

Lyle: Well, I was called in to work because the guy who was supposed to be in was ill or >something. I arrived in the wetlands at around nine A.M. and met up with the supervisor. We were >going to survey the area and see if it was possible to build some houses or something there. >Dumb idea if you ask me, building on a known flood plain, but hey, not my problem, right?

Lee: Mr. ██████? Please stay on topic.

Lyle: Right, sorry. So anyway, we were surveying the area about twenty meters from the river █████, close to the ███████. We had been pulling up shrubbery and such to check the soil underneath, and see how much water retention there was. We found the well about thirty meters north of where the recreational centre is at around… (Long pause as Lyle thinks) three P.M. It was found by accident as we were ripping up some shrubbery and Pete nearly fell in. Oh, Pete was a contractor working with us, he's not important though.

Lee: I see. What is Pete's surname?

Lyle: Oh, it's ██████. Pete ██████.

Lee: Did Mr. ██████ come into contact with the well?

Lyle: No, just me. I dropped my toolbox in the well as I was clearing the shrubbery. I basically pulled on some brambles, slipped and kicked my toolbox into the well.

Lee: Did you retrieve your toolbox?

Lyle: Yes, but I got wet doing it. Thank got for this hot weather, right?

Lee: Indeed, it has been warm. Did you wash yourself following contact with the water?

Lyle: Oh god yes. Who knows what's in that water, I mean, (expletive), it melted my tools somehow.

Lee: Quite. When you opened your toolbox after it had fallen into the well, What happened?

Lyle: Right. Well I opened it and most of my tools were gone. The only things I could find were the plastic handles to my screwdriver set, the plastic and rubber casing for my drill and the rubber and wooden handle for my hammers. It was like the metal parts had just vanished. I couldn't find any trace of metal in the box at all.

Lee: I see. Anything else?

Lyle: No, that's it. You guys showed up the day after. The council shut the area down because it might have been an environmental hazard, but you already knew that, being environmental inspectors, right?

Lee: Yes, well, we've no need to keep you further. If you'd like to follow Dr. ██████ here, and he will give you a shot to keep you from catching anything nasty from that old well water.

Lyle: Cheers, boss, sounds good. Take care.

Closing Statement: Mr. Lyle ██████ was given a mild amnestic and the event was covered up as a hoax. Anyone else on site was also given a mild amnestic. The individuals there were as follows: Supervisor Terry ████████, Workmen Barry ███████ and Sadie █████, and contractor Peter ██████.
