Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures:
Due to the Suburban placement, and SCP-XXXX's permanent fixture to its surroundings, the house containing SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-3 is to be cordoned off with a 2.5-meter high metal fence. The gate is to be kept locked at all times, and 1 Guard is to be situated in the perimeter at night at all times, to deter any break-ins to the property. The site is to be monitored through cameras placed on the location to further deter potential intruders.
If questioned by the general public, on-site personnel is to answer following cover-up procedure "Requiem", stating the house is closed off due to an unexpected sinkhole appearing in the ground beneath it. Any personnel entering the house without the required authorization are to be apprehended and be subject to the required amount of Amnestics.
Due to the events following Addendum XXXX:Encore, the special containment procedures have been updated:
SCP-XXXX and its subsidiaries are now located in site-17 in the house they were found in. The house containing SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-3 is to be cordoned off with a 2.5-meter high metal fence, and 2 guards should be stationed on patrol at all times.
SCP-XXXX-2 is to be kept in its case, in a standardized anomalous entity containment locker, and should only be removed during transport and testing.
Description:
SCP-XXXX is the group term for a series of 3 anomalous items, located in a suburban district in York, England.
SCP-XXXX-1 is a heavily modified ████ brand gramophone, dating back to the early 20th century. It has been modified in such a way to allow it to accept multiple forms of audio format, including CD, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and an option to adjust Bass and Treble. SCP-XXXX-1 is attached to a stand on top of a 1 x 1 x 1.5-meter storage cabinet, which when opened, revealed the body of [DATA EXPUNGED]. All attempts to remove SCP-XXXX-1 from this cabinet have been unsuccessful. With the concern of damaging the anomaly, no further attempts to remove it should be made. SCP-XXXX-1 behaves like a regular gramophone when played with other non-anomalous vinyl records, allowing for the object to perform its intended purpose. SCP-XXXX-1 has no known power source, requiring only the turning of a small crank on its side 3 times to start the gramophone, and can be stopped by holding a button located next to the crank.
After the events noted in Addendum:XXXX:01, 3 small dials were found inside SCP-XXXX-1's storage container. The dials correspond to a feature of SCP-XXXX-1, namely: Playback Speed, Volume, and Track selection. The Playback Speed dial values range from -2x to 2x, and increase in intervals of 0.5, allowing the SCP to speed up, slow down, or even reverse records played. The Volume dial has values ranging from 0 to 11, although testing shows no change in activity in the entity. Finally, the Track Selection dial allows the needle of the gramophone to jump between grooves in the vinyl record, allowing for the certain track to be selected with accuracy. All notable experiments with these features can be found in Addendum XXXX:Encore.
SCP-XXXX-2 is a standard vinyl record, with minimal signs of wear and tear, apart from a large scratch spanning about 3 inches across its surface. Its case is made of clear plastic, with a label saying: "Silence, For You: By ████████". When played in other non-anomalous record players, no noise is generated. After about 1 minute of sustained playing, the player will begin to heat up until it either melts or explodes. When this happens, SCP-XXXX-2 will remain intact, and will have sustained no visible damage, appearing in the wreckage of the record player.
SCP-XXXX-3 is a 10ft x 10ft x 15ft soundproof recording booth. It is currently located in the attic of the house and contains SCP-XXXX-1. The walls, door, and ceiling are made of pinewood and painted yellow on the outside, while the inside is padded with Soundproofing Acoustic Foam in a brown and black checker pattern. After testing its soundproofing ability without the use of SCP-XXXX-1, it has been shown that SCP-XXXX-3 (while not in its “active” state) is terrible at keeping in sound. Attempts have been made to remove SCP-XXXX-3 and therefore SCP-XXXX-1, but have proven futile. Permission to remove the entire house and move it to a better location is pending 05 approval. Approval granted by o5-█, see Addendum XXXX:Encore. SCP-XXXX and the house containing it is now located at site-17.
These objects, with exception of SCP-XXXX-2, show no anomalous abilities when isolated and tested individually. However, when combing all of the SCPs, we can see their anomalous powers.
After placing SCP-XXXX-2 into SCP-XXXX-1 and closing the doors to SCP-XXXX-3, the anomalous effect begins to appear. Not only does SCP-XXXX-3 become completely soundproof, audio recording devices also begin to pick up a faint melody that goes completely unnoticed by humans and animals inside of the booth. Whether this is due to the secondary anomalous effect, or that it is simply too quiet to hear is unknown. During this time, SCP-XXXX is considered to be in an “Active” state.
Once a subject is inside the active SCP-XXXX-3, roughly 7 seconds into the song, they lose the ability to hear, along with any audio recording device inside. After roughly 7 more seconds, they lose their sense of smell, after that, they begin to slowly lose each of the body's "senses" until they lose the ability to perform basic motor functions. From this point on, they are considered incurable and should be terminated. It is to note, that any electronic recording device will also lose the ability to perceive its correspondent stimuli and return to normal function once removed from SCP-XXXX-3. Due to this, subjects inside SCP-XXXX-3 during this time should be equipped with brain wave monitoring equipment, as testing shows that is the last stimuli that SCP-XXXX will take. Subjects have been shown to not only be not afraid of the effects of SCP-XXXX but when succumbed to it, begin to feel at peace, until termination occurs. Usage of brainwave monitoring devices throughout SCP-XXXX’s active state has shown that the body will continue to perform the act of hearing as normal, but 100% of subjects testify that they lose their hearing completely.
It is important to know, that opening the door to SCP-XXXX-3 while the melody is playing immediately ceases the advancement of stimuli being lost, and can therefore be stopped before the subject loses too much.
Since the discovery of the initial anomalous effects of SCP-XXXX, another effect has been brought to light by Researcher Bolton and Dr. Wesley. See Addendum XXXX:Encore for more details.
Addendum XXXX:01 DISCOVERY
SCP-XXXX and all its derivatives were discovered in the attic of a 3 story house in the outskirts of York, England.
A call was received by local law enforcement by a man named ██████ Dousing, who said that they had found their father, ████ Dousing dead in their attic. After 25 minutes, law enforcement arrived at the building, accompanied by Dr. Wesley, and his assistant Researcher Bolton, who was attending this call to train Researcher Bolton in interrogations and interviews. They search the scene and discover SCP-XXXX, and begin to set up an interview with ██████ Dousing. The interview log is as follows:
Interviewed: Mr ███████ Dousing
Interviewers: Researcher Bolton and Dr. Wensley Supervising
Foreword: After the discovery of SCP-XXXX and the discovery of the corpse of ███████ Dousing, the Son of the man in question was interviewed.
<Begin Log, 22:45pm Roughly 3 hours after the death of ███████ Dousing>
Researcher Bolton: Welcome, sir. Please have a seat, we'll begin shortly
Dousing enters the hastily built interview room, situated next to SCP-XXXX, and takes a seat silently.
Researcher Bolton: Before we start, is there, ugh, anything I can get you? Water? Food…
Dousing shakes his head
Researcher Bolton: …Alright then. So, I'm sure you know why I'm here today, to discuss the events that have, ugh, transpired, in the last few hours?
Dousing stays silent, staring at his hands, Researcher Bolton clears his throat.
Researcher Bolton: Well, I have a few questions, if you wouldn't mind helping me get some answers: Did you and your father have much contact leading up to, ugh, today?
Dousing shakes his head
Researcher Bolton: Would you say your relationship with your father has been, healthy? Since the divorce I mean.
Dousing shakes his head
Researcher Bolton: Did he ever, hit you?
Dousing stays silent, nodding a few moments later. Dr. Wesley signals to Researcher Bolton to change the subject
Researcher Bolton: Hmm? Oh, right. I'd like to ask about the, ugh, machine next to us, do you know what it is?
Dousing shakes his head
Researcher Bolton: You have no idea at all? Have you seen this machine before until, ugh, now?
Dousing shakes his head
Researcher Bolton: Alright, that's no problem…
Researcher Bolton begins to flick through some papers. After a few moments, he begins to ask a question but is interrupted by Dousing
Dousing: When are we gonna be done here?
Dr Wesley It'll be over before you know it if you continue answering our questions. Now, Researcher Bolton?
Researcher Bolton: Yeah sure. So, about your family…
While the interview continues, a guard enters SCP-XXXX. They take a look around and discover SCP-XXXX-1's crank, and turns it 3 times
Researcher Bolton: So, your father was a musician?
Dousing: He was insane, that's what. If all "musicians are like that, I'd rather go deaf. Like my sister…
Researcher Bolton: Insane? How do you mea-
Chaos is heard from the radios of the police stationed in the building, and shouting can be heard
Dr Wesley What's going on? We're in the middle of an interview, I'll be speaking to your chief about this.
Dr Bolton is heard speaking with an officer, one of the privates has gone missing. The door to SCP-XXXX-3 is opened after a few minutes, to which a man in police uniform is found dead inside
Researcher Bolton: I-Ugh, you said your father was insane?
<End Log>
Closing Statement: Law enforcement rushed to find the cause of death, and from then on ██████ Dousing was silent, the interview ended shortly after.
██████ Dousing refused to take any other interviews after this incident for several weeks. He was held in foundation custody for this time and refused to speak with anyone. He denied food and was forced to eat in order to stay healthy. His condition began to deteriorate and he was hospitalized.
After a few weeks from his initial hospitaltisation, he said yes to a follow-up interview with Researcher Bolton and Dr. Wesley. When the two foundation employees entered the subject's room, they noticed he was in poor health, refusing to eat, and ripping out his IV fluids after they were put in. After a few minutes of idle chat between the subject and Researcher Bolton, the interview began.
Interviewed: Mr ███████ Dousing
Interviewers: Researcher Bolton and Dr. Wensley Supervising
Foreword: A suffering and ill ███████ Dousing lay in his hospital bed for the entirety of the interview. This interview takes place after the discovery of SCP-XXXX's anomalous effects, and clearance was given to inform ███████ Dousing of the object's effects.
<Begin Log, 19:32pm>
Researcher Bolton: Begin log, SCP-XXXX:T6W. The time is… 19:32pm. I am interviewing Mr ███████ Dousing, Mr Dousing is their anything you wish to say before we start?
Dousing: If its alright by you, I think I'll have that water now
Researcher Bolton laughs, and hands him a glass of water
Researcher Bolton: Of course, enjoy. I wanted to talk to you about your sister, you mentioned her before the incident back at the house.
Dousing: About Emily? What do you want to know?
Researcher Bolton: Anything you can tell us that might help with our investigation, is she d- is she still with us?
Dousing shakes his head
Researcher Bolton: I'm, sorry for your loss, if you don't mind me asking, how did she die?
Dousing shakes his head
Researcher Bolton: By your reaction, I'm assuming you know? Did it have to do something with your father?
Dousing stays silent, nodding a few moments later.
Researcher Bolton: Did he murder her?
Dousing: Emily… she was born deaf, and dad didn't like that. After mom left, he became, unwell, violent, and stuff. One day he, took it too far and thunk, hits her with a trophy. She died in his arms and I watched the whole thing. He saw me, said he'd do the same if I telled.
Researcher Bolton: Did you ever see her body again?
Dousing shakes his head
Researcher Bolton: I apologise if this is too much for you, but inside of the machine your father was found in, we found a body…
Dousing: I get you, you can stop there
Researcher Bolton: Of course, speaking of the machine, we thought we'd best tell you of its… usage
Dousing: Its a record player ain't it? Didn't Dad make it?
Dr. Wesley interjects
Dr Wesley It is known as SCP-XXXX, and it's a strange one.
Researcher Bolton: We discovered that it has the ability to… remove the senses of living things, sight, smell…
Dousing: Hearing?
Researcher Bolton nods
Dousing: …fuck me
Researcher Bolton: What is it?
Mr Dousing begins to tear up, and is shown in a considerable amount of stress
Dousing: The old fart was trying to redeem himself ey
Researcher Bolton: What do you mean-
The heart rate monitor begins to blare an alarm, as Mr Dousing begins to go into a cardiac arrest, medical staff flood the room and the log ends
<End Log>
Closing Statement: // 1 hour, 36 minutes into the treatment, Mr. Dousing dies from the cardiac arrest, his lasts words recorded by Dr. Wesley: "Silence, For You then?" //
Researchers notes: With the death of Mr. Dousing, we have learned a little more about the origins and motives for SCP-XXXX. It was a shame that the treatment was unsuccessful, there was a lot more information that we could have obtained from him.
I would like to request permission to remove the house currently containing SCP-XXXX and move it closer to site-17 for further study. Also, a note from Researcher Bolton: If the removal of the house is approved, additional request to build a commemorative statue in its place memorial bench in its place.
Addendum XXXX:02 OBSERVATIONS
The following logs are the experiments of the effects of SCP-XXXX on subjects, taken and conducted by Researcher Bolton and Dr. Wesley:
Observational Log XXXX.RH.1 SUMMARY
Subject: SCP-XXXX
Preface: A test subject (D-210302) was introduced into SCP-XXXX-3, and the door was closed behind them. Cameras and Audio recording devices were planted inside of SCP-XXXX-3 beforehand and were confirmed to be working by the subject. The subject was instructed to place SCP-XXXX-2 inside of SCP-XXXX-1 and to turn the crank.
Observation Notes: The subject showed no sign of distress or worry when given these instructions and followed them out without protest. They remained in contact and answered the questions given to them. During this window of time, observers noticed that no sounds were emanating from SCP-XXXX-3, although they were being picked up by the audio equipment inside. Roughly 7 seconds into the test, the subject stopped responding to questions asked, and the audio equipment stopped transmitting any sound.
After this, the door was opened by foundation staff and the D-Class was escorted back to their cell. The D-Class was tested and was shown to have lost the ability to hear. The audio equipment used in the test was taken from SCP-XXXX-3 but resumed normal function immediately after.
Observational Log XXXX.RH.2 SUMMARY
Subject: SCP-XXXX
Preface: A test subject (D-551523) was introduced into SCP-XXXX-3, and the door was closed behind them. The D-Class was given a note to open in the event of loss of contact with the staff, in which they were to signal to the camera with a "thumbs up" sign every few seconds. Cameras and Audio recording devices were planted inside of SCP-XXXX-3 beforehand and were confirmed to be working by the subject. The subject was instructed to place SCP-XXXX-2 inside of SCP-XXXX-1 and to turn the crank.
Observation Notes: The subject followed the instructions without protest. They remained in contact and answered the questions given to them. No sounds were emanating from SCP-XXXX-3, although they were being picked up by the audio equipment inside just as before. Roughly 7 seconds into the test, the subject stopped responding to questions asked, and the audio equipment stopped transmitting any sound.
The test was signaled to go on as the D-Class opened the note and read it. Roughly 10 seconds later, the D-Class finished reading the note and looked at the camera, and held a thumbs up. A few seconds later, the D-Class did this action again. However, the next time they did it, the D-Class couldn't located the camera and began to show signs of distress. Shortly after, the camera feed was also lost.
The door was opened and the D-Class was escorted to the medical ward. They were proven to be deaf and blind but also lost the use of their olfactory nerve.
More similar tests were performed on subjects, with similar results. Each subject began to lose their "senses" one by one, however, the cause of death was still not found until Observational Log XXXX.RH.10, shown below:
Observational Log XXXX.RH.10 SUMMARY
Subject: SCP-XXXX
Preface: A test subject (D-333331) was introduced into SCP-XXXX-3, and the door was closed behind them. The D-Class was equipped with a full-body suit, measuring the activities of the neurons and brain patterns of the subject. They were given instructions to give a "thumbs-up" sign if they lost contact with the staff, and were told to not act unpredictably if it became dark.
Observation Notes: The subject followed the instructions with mild concern. They were reminded that failure to comply would result in termination, in which they began to listen again. Once the test began, they remained in contact and answered the questions given to them. SCP-XXXX-3 stayed silent to onlookers.
Roughly 7 seconds into the test, the subject lost hearing and signaled to the camera with a thumbs up. Roughly 14 seconds later, the subject's heart rate went up as they lost their sight. From then on, monitoring the D-Class by eye was impossible.
The test continued, and the monitoring of the D-Class's activity showed when they lost their "senses" and in what order, which stayed consistent over all test subjects.
After around half a minute of exposure, the subject's heart rate slowed dramatically, and their brain began to release endorphins to a large scale degree. At 1 minute of exposure, the subject's heart rate flatlined, and all brain activity stopped.
The subject's body was recovered, and an autopsy determined the cause of death to be a complete brain activity halt, resulting in the entire body shutting down immediately.
After Observational Log XXXX.RH.10, the order of what senses SCP-XXXX removes was discovered and is as follows:
1. Hearing
2. Smell
3. Sight
4. Taste
5. Touch
6. Balance
7. Chemical Control (Possibly explains the sudden release of Endorphins?)
8. Limb control (Paralysis)
9. Consciousness (Subject becomes comatose)
10. Total brain activity shutdown, resulting in incurable termination.
The nature of how SCP-XXXX effects and removes the use of these functions is currently unknown, with subjects showing no reason to lose these senses.
It is also worth noting that subjects that already lack those senses and are exposed to the effects of SCP-XXXX show no change, but seemingly SCP-XXXX attempts to remove the missing sense, as in the log below:
Observational Log XXXX.RH.14 SUMMARY
Subject: SCP-XXXX
Preface: A test subject (D-333331) was introduced into SCP-XXXX-3, and the door was closed behind them. This particular D-Class was deaf already and was told to give a "thumbs-up" sign every time a device vibrated against them and were told to not act unpredictably if it became dark. The D-Class was equipped with a full-body suit, measuring the activities of the neurons and brain patterns of the subject.
Observation Notes: Once the test began, they remained in contact and by signaling to the camera each time the device buzzed. SCP-XXXX-3 stayed silent to onlookers.
Roughly 7 seconds into the test, they showed no sign of change, and monitoring their brain waves, showed no anomalies, unlike the subjects that could hear. another few seconds in, the effect of SCP-XXXX began to take place, this time starting with removing the sense of smell.
The subject was removed before any other effects could take place.
Addendum XXXX:Encore
After initial testing had been done on SCP-XXXX, a request to further test the abilities of the entity by Researcher Bolton and Dr. Wesley was approved. This was in light of extra features being discovered on SCP-XXXX-1, including a playback speed adjuster, track selection, and volume adjuster.
The following logs are several occasions where testing these parameters provided different results on subjects inside of SCP-XXXX:
Observational Log XXXX.ENCORE.1 SUMMARY
Subject: SCP-XXXX
Preface: A test subject (D-93612) was introduced into SCP-XXXX-3, and the door was closed behind them. They were fully equipped with the necessary sensors as per usual testing procedures.
Observation Notes: The D-Class was instructed to open the storage container beneath SCP-XXXX-1, and to read out the current value of the volume dial. The D-Class complied, and read "5". They were told to increase that number to the highest it could go, they complied and increased it to 11
They were then instructed to turn the crank 3 times and await further notice. They once again complied and after 14 seconds of observation, lost the ability to hear and smell. The test was called off and the D-Class was removed.
Researchers Notes: It looks like that the volume dial either doesn't work or makes no noticeable change in SCP-XXXX's behavior. We did a few tests with the volume dial, and each showed the exact same results, I think it's safe to say that the volume doesn't change it
Note from Dr. Wesley: Researcher Bolton, you are required to use more formal writing in these notes. I hope I won't have to ask you again.
Observational Log XXXX.ENCORE.11 SUMMARY
Subject: SCP-XXXX
Preface: A test subject (D-64534) was introduced into SCP-XXXX-3, and the door was closed behind them. They were fully equipped with the necessary sensors as per usual testing procedures.
Observation Notes: The D-Class was instructed to open the storage container beneath SCP-XXXX-1, and to read out the current value of the playback value dial. They complied and read "1x". They were instructed to increase that value by one notch and read out the value. They once again complied and read "1.5x".
They were then instructed to turn the crank 3 times and await further notice. After roughly 4 seconds, the sensors lost signal with the D-Class's ears, and roughly 4 more seconds after, lost signal with their olfactory nerve. The speed at which SCP-XXXX began to take away the subject's senses had increased dramatically, and it was after 16 seconds when the D-Class was removed from SCP-XXXX.
Tests showed that in this time, the subject has lost the ability to Hear, Smell, See, and Taste, all in the span of 16 seconds.
Researchers Notes: This test proved highly useful. By adjusting the playback speed of SCP-XXXX, its anomalous effect took place much quicker. Further testing is needed to see whether or not this is beneficial to us.
Observational Log XXXX.ENCORE.12 SUMMARY
Subject: SCP-XXXX
Preface: A test subject (D-37284) was introduced into SCP-XXXX-3, and the door was closed behind them. They were fully equipped with the necessary sensors as per usual testing procedures. The D-Class was instructed to set the playback speed dial to 0.5x, and upon loss of sight, was instructed to switch the dial to -1x.
Observation Notes: Once the test had begun the subject began to show signs of distress when informed of the loss of sight. They were reminded that failure to comply would result in punishment and begrudgingly complied.
The subject turned the crank 3 times, and after roughly 14 seconds, lost their hearing. 14 more seconds later, the subject lost their sense of smell, and 14 seconds more lost the ability to see, along with the camera feed being cut. Their heart rate began to rise, and the effect showed no signs of slowing down. Roughly 10 seconds later, the camera feed returned, and along with the sight of the D-Class. Roughly 14 seconds later, all senses lost by the D-Class due to SCP-XXXX's effect had been restored.
Researchers Notes: This was astounding! Using the playback speed, it's possible to reverse the effects of SCP-XXXX. To what extent is currently unknown, however, we may be able to restore the senses of the previous D-Class patients. Or potentially, revive or resurrect those killed by the effects, the possibilities are endless!
Note from Dr. Wesley: I would like to further my request to move SCP-XXXX's housing to a safer location. Transporting this amount of D-Class personnel to a heavily populated zone is beginning to become too risky.
Request Granted by o5-█
In light of this discovery, the request made by Dr. Wesley was granted by o5-█. SCP-XXXX is now located in site-17
Observational Log XXXX.ENCORE.15 SUMMARY
Subject: SCP-XXXX
Preface: A test subject (D-372546) was introduced into SCP-XXXX-3, and the door was closed behind them. They were fully equipped with the necessary sensors as per usual testing procedures. The D-Class was instructed to open the storage container and read the current value of the Track Selection dial.
Observation Notes: The subject read the value as "1". They were instructed to turn the dial so the value reads "4". They comply, and confirm the value of the dial.
The subject is then instructed to turn the crank 3 times to activate the machine. The machine activates and the record begins to play. After 7 seconds of play, the monitoring equipment shows that the D-Class's sense of taste no longer functions, and after confirming with the D-Class, also shows they can still hear and see. 7 more seconds pass, and the D-Class reports feeling numb over his whole body. The sensors show that the D-Class has lost the ability to feel "touch" stimuli produced by the suit.
The test is concluded and the D-Class is escorted out of SCP-XXXX-3.
Researchers Notes: Every time test this SCP, we find more and more usage for it. Thanks to this new track selection dial, we can harmlessly and temporarily disable the senses of subjects! This will make for some amazing research potential.
Note from Dr. Wesley: Now that we can pinpoint a way to remove specific senses temporarily, I shall look in a way to use this for research into other SCPs.
