Item #: SCP-5106
Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5106 must be kept in a large chamber with a width and length of at least 55m and a height of 40m. The walls themselves must be at least 50cm thick. No less than two spotlights must be shone at the central "altar" of SCP-5106. It is recommended to also conduct camera surveillance on the object and report any abnormalities, should they occur. Surveillance teams must be rotated every 6 hours to prevent potential cognitohazards from occurring.

Entrance to the chamber should only be done with minimum Level 3 clearance, and only for as long as absolutely necessary. Personnel with a history of moderate to severe mental illness may not be permitted entry regardless of clearance.

Cleaning and maintenance should be done every 24 days to ensure maximum integrity of the containment unit. D-Class subjects may be used for this purpose, but before entry they must be specifically told to not look at the altar no matter what. If vision of the altar occurs regardless, administer amnestics as needed.

Description: SCP-5106 is a pyramid-shaped altar of unknown origin, built from an equally unknown, stone-like material. It was first found in the Antarctic regions after several "UFO Hunters" have discussed an unusual sight resembling a high velocity impact in the snow from a large object on the internet website ████████.com. Posing as fellow "UFO Hunters", the Foundation dispatched a team to investigate the crash site.

Buried deep within the snow, the team found and recovered SCP-5104. Immediately upon closer observation, several personnel reported a sense of moderate unease and paranoia. One member allegedly saw shadows coming from on top of the cube of the pyramid.

Originally, the object showed no real activity aside from the unease the recovery team reported, which lead to it being originally classified as "Safe". However, following incident 5601-A, where approximately half the assigned research staff either became completely incapable of rational thought, or disappeared entirely, stricter and more extensive containment measures were put in place.

When directly observed, the observer may perceive faint shadows emanating from the top of the pyramid. This triggers a moderate fear reaction in the observer, which after 20 minutes of observation (assuming the observer isn't right in front of the object), becomes far more severe. Observation through a live video feed seems to greatly reduce the effect, allowing for a minimum of 5 hours of observation without any notable side effects.

However, prolonged proximity within 60m of the pyramid's center, (prolonged proximity meaning at least 8 hours of proximity) will lead to much greater effects, such as severe panic attacks, seizures or a strong need to inflict self harm. In some cases, the affected person may even disappear. Where they are brought is as of yet, still unknown, but preparations and approval for exploration of wherever the disappearances are brought, is still pending.

Addendum 5601-1: The shadows cast from whatever is on top of SCP-5601 appears to be a tangible entity but appears to not be directly observable under normal conditions. To counteract this, some of the materials found on 5601's crash site have been recovered and repurposed into what is now designated as SCP-5601-1. A special lens designed to make the full extent of SCP-5601 observable. See experiment logs below for the resulting experimentation done with it.

Experiment Log #5602-03 [ACCESS DENIED]

Addendum 5601-2: After several experiments using SCP-5601-1, it is now known that an "image" rests on the top of the altar, presumably the source of these shadows experienced by observers. Direct observation, be it through camera feed, photograph or direct sight, causes SCP-5601's usual mental effects but at a much higher order of magnitude, progressing in mere seconds rather than minutes or hours.

Observation through photographic imagery should not be done for longer than 30 seconds. Any filtered footage of the entity of SCP-5601 should not be sent without O5 Approval.

Addendum 5601-3: Further analysis of both the lenses and the experimentation logs, it turns out that the entity is not actually "invisible" in the traditional sense, but rather blocked out by the human brain in an attempt to "protect" the viewer from seeing it. The lenses seem to remove this property, letting the viewer fully perceive this entity.
