Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures:

SCP-XXXX is to be kept in a 9 in. x 12 in. (22.86 cm. x 30.48 cm.) Lead Folder in Standard Storage Locker 42-BX at the Satellite Outpost of Site-██. The Item is to be handled by two Armed Guards when contained, as well as when being transferred and during testing. Access to SCP-XXXX is to be granted by Level 02 Clearance from any Site-██ Officials or Doctors of that level or above. Any instance of SCP-XXXX-A must be incinerated at the on-site Furnace. This applies to all instances, regardless of hostility. However, non-hostile instances can be interacted with before termination. The only allowed means of interaction are:

  • Verbal Speech
  • Basic Tasks/Tests
  • Making Limited Contact

(Note: Any other engagements not listed tend to confuse SCP-XXXX-A, and have led to hostility and/or bad temperament)

When Tests are completed, or a violent form of SCP-XXXX-A emerges, the two present guards must terminate the instance using standard rifles. If both guards are killed or maimed in any matter, a sprinkler system installed inside the testing chamber must be activated by the Lead Testing Doctor during that test. (Note: This title applies to the Lead Doctor of any SCP-XXXX test ONLY. Any other doctor's interference will be met with punishment) The mixture produced from the sprinkler is made up of Cyanide Powder and Water. This has been shown to make SCP-XXXX-A dissolve near-instantly. However, the dissolved instance will leave a pool of bile from its body, which has proven to be incredibly difficult to clean, as well as poisonous. The Dissolving Procedure of SCP-XXXX is to be taken only when necessary.

Description:
SCP-XXXX is a piece of faded piece of paper, measured at 8.5 in. x 11 in. (21.59 cm. x 27.94 cm.). The paper shows various creases and small tears, all seemingly accidental by nature, however, this is not certain. On the front of the object in black ink is a poem written in English, which is related in its structure to be in a "Tongue Twister" style. The poem is somewhat legible, however, it appears as though it was written quickly, as many scratched out words and sentences are seen in the body of the text. When examined (with ignoring the scratched out words) the poem reads (when translated) as:

A sinister snake snapped at Sam while Sam sold him silly lies

(Note: SCP-XXXX's effect will only occur when it is present during the reading)
SCP-XXXX was originally found in a forest near Tver, Russia in 19██, when rumors of a pink snake attacking hunters in the woods started to rise. A task force was sent into the forest to apprehend the anomaly, to which it encountered 5 instances of SCP-XXXX-A and discovered SCP-XXXX itself, along with a mass of corpses surrounding it. For further information on the finding and capturing of SCP-XXXX and its instances, please see “Addendum XXXX-A2”.

When the text of the poem is read aloud while within the individual grabbing reach of the subject who spoke it, the subject will begin to feel and mention that their mouth has begun to feel increasingly dry. After around 15 to 45 minutes, the speaker of the text will then start to experience incredible pain, usually collapsing. They will attempt to yell and ask for help, however, while some words will be understandable, most will simply come out as gurgles and noises. After 1 to 2 minutes of convulsions, the speaker will forcefully open their mouth, slowly extending their tongue outside of their mouths at a slow pace, however, the tongue will continue to extend beyond its initial length. The tongue can extend from a distance of 2.8 feet (0.853 m.) to 9.4 feet (2.86 m.). When the tongue stops extending, it will then coil itself counter-clockwise, which it will then twitch, triggering the mouth of the speaker to close forcefully, causing the teeth of the subject to bite through the tongue.

The bitten end of the tongue will autonomously close its wound by folding the top and bottom lacerations of the tongue together and begin to emit a quiet rattling-like noise. Two fangs, usually measuring at 2 in. (5.08 cm) will emerge from the tip of the tongue. These fangs are found to match the genetic structure of the skeleton of the subject. At this point, the tongue is believed to gain sentience and becomes an instance of SCP-XXXX-A. SCP-XXXX-A will then dart its head towards the subject, lunging at them and biting them in the carotid artery, delivering a dose of venom noted to be roughly 6 times more lethal than that of a King Cobra. The subject will then expire after the bite.

(Note: During the transformation, some subjects may request water or some other drink/beverage. This is to never be granted due to the effect of water causing a prolonged transformation, increasing the time and pain to seemingly random points. The longest reported transformation was 28 hours, in which the D-Class subject could not sleep due to what she described as “a tornado of knives swirling in her throat”.)

After the subject has deceased, SCP-XXXX-A will begin to behave in one of two manners, the first being calm and docile, often coiling its body as a sign of this. These specimens are shown to have a moderate level of understanding, though they can still be confused and turned dangerous via certain means. The second form will immediately become erratic and angry, attacking any living being it can sense. How it can sense these beings is assumed to be via Echo Location, the rattling from its tail acting as the sound producer. If hostile, the instance is to be terminated and incinerated. However if docile, testing can continue and take place.

Addendum XXXX-A1
The following is an interview between Dr. ███████ (referred to as Doctor) and SCP-XXXX-A Instance #17 (referred to as "Paul"). The instance was given a red and blue square of fabric. It was then told by Dr. ███████ what his purposes for speaking to it were and then went on to explain that the red square would mean No and the blue square would mean Yes to the questions that he would ask. The instance then seemingly displayed a nod of its head, as if it understood.

SCP-XXXX-A “Paul” is remaining calm. Dr. ███████ is sat at a table in the same room.

Begin Log, Time: 12:04 PM

Doctor: Alright, let's get this going, *ahem*, first question, can you understand me?

Paul: (Motions to Blue Square)

Doctor: Excellent, second question, (Dr. ███████ opens his notes) do you know you killed that man? (Dr. ███████ points to deceased D-Class)

Paul: (Motions to Red Square)

Doctor: Hmm. Just watched you bite the D-Class subject to death roughly 20 minutes ago, I figured you would have known. Third question, are you able to consume or eat? And if so, are you carnivorous, basically meaning you only eat meat?

Paul: (Slowly cocks its head to the right. Remains motionless for 30 seconds. Motions to Red Square)

Doctor: Figured. Question four, do you know what this is? (Holds up SCP-XXXX)

Paul: (Remains motionless. Clicking can be heard by the cameras, though Dr. ███████ does not seem to be aware of it. )

Doctor: Hmm? (Dr. ███████ waits for Paul to answer)

(2 minutes and 23 seconds pass)

Doctor: Well I guess I'll have to try that one again later. Question five-

(as Dr. ███████ begins to put SCP-XXXX down, he accidentally creases the edge of the page)

Doctor: What is it tha- AGH!

(Paul lunges at Dr. ███████, biting his carotid artery, killing him)

(The two guards stationed outside enter the test chamber and fire at the instance, terminating it)

End Log, Time: 12:11 PM

Addendum XXXX-A2

The following is a detailed description of the finding of SCP-XXXX and the discovery of its abilities.

On March 29, 19██, Mobile Task Force A-C4 (nicknamed “The Cold Crew”) was sent into the woods surrounding the Northeastern part of Tver, Russia, reported by locals to be inhabited by the rumored “pink snakes”, after a barrier had been set up around the section of the forest where sightings occurred the most, detouring hunters back to their homes. At 6:11 PM, one member of the task force reported hearing clicking from the underside of a fallen tree. The soldier then began to turn the hollow log over, to which an instance of SCP-XXXX-A lunged at his neck, biting the insulated neck guard. The soldier, frightened, attempted to rip off the instance but was unable to do so, to which he frantically pulled out his handgun and attempted to shoot the instance in what he believed was its head. He did so successfully, narrowly missing his neck, and the instance relieved its grip and fell to the forest floor dead. The field scientists trailing behind recovered the body as the task force patrolled further into the forest

After 42 minutes of continued search, and 3 subsequent encounters with SCP-XXXX-A instances, all of which were terminated on the spot, the task force noticed a horrid odor coming from their left. They followed the odor and came upon a tree with bodies in varying states of decomposition around it. Examination of these bodies noted a common trait in their tongues being removed, bite marks being noted at the points at which they were separated. Nailed onto the tree above the corpses was a piece of paper. A member of the task force stepped over the bodies to get closer to note to examine it. Written on the paper was the line “A sinister snake snapped at Sam while Sam sold him silly lies”, oddly written in English despite its Russian coordinates. The soldier was asked by his crew what it said, to which he read it aloud for them to hear.

After they notified the scientists and field agents present of their discovery, the tree, note, and corpses were detained and studied for any anomalous signs. While protecting the site, the member of the task force who read the note aloud, named Charlie Hamlet, began to tell the other members of the task force that his mouth felt incredibly dry, and asked if they had water. One member remarked that the water was back at the armored van they had used to get to the forest, to which Charlie cussed at.

11 minutes later, the task force began to notice Charlie groaning and clutching his throat, to which he was asked what was wrong. He began to state his condition when he let out a scream of pain. He fell to his knees and gripped his throat with his hands and continued to scream. The remaining task force rushed to aid him, however, they noticed that when he arrived the visor on his helmet appeared to be warped, as if it was being pushed upon underneath it, when the visor cracked and Charlie’s tongue began to stretch out of the hole, being cut by the glass as it extended. The soldiers, stunned, stared as the tongue began to grow farther and farther, bleeding profusely. Charlie was attempting to grab for his crewmates when his tongue then began to twist itself around and then produced two white fangs from its tip. The soldiers, recognizing the tongue’s new form, began to draw fire on the tongue, however, this seemed to only agitate the instance. The instance then jerked its body, to which Charlie forcefully closed his mouth, biting the instance off. The tongue then leaped toward Charlie’s neck, however, it fell short due to the constant gunfire and died instantly. When the crew rushed to Charlie to help him, his body fell forwards on top of the instance. Charlie seemingly died within seconds of his tongue being removed.

The bodies of the instances of SCP-XXXX-A were removed and sent to the Satellite Outpost at Site-██, along with the note and corpses. Questioning of the task force seemed to propose the theory that Charlie’s reading the note is what caused his death and transformation, and subsequent testing proved this theory to be accurate. A fake news report was then spread around Tver via the local news channels that stated two hunters had caught the rumored pink snake and detailed that it had suffered from a rare blood condition that caused its skin to be translucent. This proved successful to detour any more interest in SCP-XXXX, and after discreet combing of the forest, any remaining instances of SCP-XXXX-A were removed and terminated.
