Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5509 is to be kept in a standard storage locker in Site-19.
SCP-5509 is to be kept closed and latched at all times when not in use and is not to be used by any personnel not assigned to it’s research.
Description: SCP-5509 is a mahogany cased compass with N. Polls 1847 hand written inside the lid.The paper dial is in good original condition.The blued steel needle is marked for North and South. The original uneven green tinted glass is secured with a moulded sprung brass bezel.The case is secured with a brass hook and pin and two original pinned hinges. SCP-5509 measures 5cm x 5cm x 2,3cm. When closed, SCP-5509 appears to be nothing more than a small wooden box. Personnel have reported no anomalous effects when SCP-5509 is closed and latched. When the compass is opened, subjects immediately report the appearance of dark, shadow-like entities of humanoid shape walking and running in the area the subject is in. SCP-5509 is reported to point to the nearest of these entities, changing direction once another entity comes closer to SCP-5509. It has been determined in several tests across the facility that entities become more common in areas that had more deaths than other areas. Attempts to interact with these entities have not been successful.
Discovery: SCP-5509 was discovered in a thrift shop called Tammy's Treasures, located in Longview, Washington. The shop has been known to have many anomalous objects find ways onto the store’s shelves. A weekly routine inventory search of the premises by Agent Fern resulted in the discovery of SCP-5509 when Agent Fern opened SCP-5509 and the needle pointed East. Agent Fern looked in the direction the needle pointed and saw a dark specter walk towards the back of the store. The needle again changed direction and pointed Northwest where a closer specter walked between the bookcases toward Agent Fern. Agent Fern closed and latched SCP-5509 and could see no traces of the dark spectral entities. SCP- 5509 was purchased and immediately was transported to Site-19.
