Dr-Pangea (SCP-5465 "LIMBO: The Guide of the Newly Deceased")
Item #: SCP-5465
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5465 is to be kept in a locked item box in Site-73. SCP-5465, as well as SCP-5465-1, are accessible to all personnel. The anomaly is to be replaced in its containment box after each interrogation/experiment and conversations between SCP-5465-1 and researchers are be documented. During breaches SPC-5465 is to be transported back to its locker to avoid breaching containment itself. Increased containment measures of SCP-5465 have been deemed necessary. To access the interview and test logs, as well as the handling procedures, personnel must enter a password. SCP-5465 is to kept in its 5m x 5m x 5m fabric coated containment room at Site-██ while not under interrogation, examination, or experimentation. SCP-5465 is only to be accessed to authorized researchers. In the event of a containment breach SCP-5465 must be returned to its containment room. Interrogations between select personnel and SCP-5465-1 are to be documented. Interactions between SCP-5465-1 and designated research transporters are to be recorded as well.
HANDLING PROCEDURES: FOLLOW EXACTLY. DO NOT ALTER.
1. During transport, SCP-5465 is to be kept in a padded wrought iron containment box (22'' x 15'' x 18'') and is to be carried by four designated research transporters. The box is to have a minimum of three locks with handles on each side. If the case is dropped, open the casket immediately. Check for any damage on the surface of SCP-5465. When attempting communication one member of the transporter team should be present. The remaining transporters will hide out of sight from SCP-5465
- If SCP-5465 shows no sign of damage, and SCP-5465-1 is able to be reached from the projector, than place SCP-5465 back into the box and continue with transport.
- If SCP-5465 shows signs of damage (cracks, splits, and/or broken photographs) then attempt communication with SCP-5465-1. If you are unable to communicate, undergo lockdown Site/C/SUPERBLANK.
2. While out of transport SCP-5465 is to be kept far away from significant heights unless being held tightly.
- During communication/Experimentation SCP-5465 should be set on a sturdy, flat surface. Pillows can be placed around the floor close to SCP-5465 if requested by the researcher.
3. While SCP-5465 is in containment keep the anomaly in its containment box with plush pillows/fabrics surrounding it. Under no circumstance is SCP-5465 to be kept in any other containment room than its own.
4. If SCP-5465 is broken and changes hosts then that object shall be dubbed "SCP-5465" from then on. The new host of SCP-5465 will undergo the same overall containment measures.
5. SCP-5465 is to be kept 20 feet away from all organic/possessed SCP's at all times.
LOCKDOWN: If SCP-5465's host should be destroyed initiate Lockdown Site/C/SUPERBLANK. No one is permitted to leave until lockdown is complete.
Retrieval and Description: SCP-5465 is an 1888 vintage Peacock Pettibone Magic Lantern Projector with slight rust, chipped paint, a broken photograph, and color disfiguration. The anomaly was kept in an antique exhibit at the Museum of █████ in █████ Ohio, USA. No unusual behavior of the projector had been recorded before, but the unanswered death of the museums night janitor had caught the ear of a foundation employee. It was decided to bring the projector into the Foundation to check for anomalous activity. A field task force agent was sent to retrieve the anomaly on 7/12/20██. Upon reaching Site-73 the projector's photo wheel began to rotate on it's own. The agent who had retrieved the anomaly reported being greeted by the projector during transportation.
During the first examination of SCP-5465 the object activated itself and showed signs of sentience (see examination Log-1). The projector displayed a black and white image of a 16th century Renaissance noble. The figure is clad with a jerkin, a white shirt underneath, dark colored breeches, white stockings, and polished black shoes. The figure possesses dark hair and a clean shaven face. The projection speaks in many tribal tongues indigenous to Sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas although some of the specific tongues are hard to pinpoint. SCP-5465-1 also has shown signs of fluent Spanish, Arabic, Germanic languages (West and North), French, Mandarin, Japanese, and Russian. Some of SCP-5465-1's speech is outdated, suggesting it hasn't traveled the world in the past few centuries. The projection has luminous white eyes void of pupils. It is docile unless provoked (See examination Log-4).
During an exchange between Dr. Grigori and SCP-5465-1 the anomaly referred to itself as "limbo". SCP-5465-1 possesses the capability of creating bringing forward souls of the deceased (see examination Log-3). There are strict rules (refer to Log-1-Foootnote) that SCP-5465-1 refuses to break while bringing forward the dead. SCP-5465-1 will become unpredictable if more than one host is speaking/listening to it at a given time, and the projection might refuse to communicate. Therefore, all experiments regarding SCP-5465-1 should be conducted alone unless authorization is given to do a multi-person test.
Interview 5465.1: First Confrontation.
Three field agents were dispatched to the museum of ████ and recovered a projector which is now SCP-5465. There had been no reports of any unnatural movement prior to recovery. A C-Class personnel was sent to collect the projector and bring it to the interview chamber.
Log 1 - Date: 7/23/20██
Subject: SCP-5465(-1)
Conducted by: Dr. Grigori
Procedure: SCP-5465 was put in an interview chamber along with Dr. Grigori. No one else was present. All dialog was recorded for study.
Results: Information of anomaly was received. Further logs will be required.
[LOG START]
Dr. Grigori: (loud movement) (clears throat) Greetings, SCP-5465. Will you please activate for interrogation.
SCP-5465: (no response)
Dr. Grigori: I know you are in there so I will ask again. SCP-5465, will you please communicate with facility staff for interrogation.
SCP-5465(-1): (slow turning of projection photo-wheel. Faint static noise as SCP-5465-1 was projected onto the wall). Greetings, Nikolas Grigori. Is SCP-5465 my name now?
Dr. Grigori: Indeed it is. Every anomaly in our possession has a numbered title. How did you know my name?
SCP-5465-1: I can read it in our spirit. Everyones soul is an open book to me. For instance, I can tell you are a holy man yet you enjoy sexual pleasures. You have many friends yet you don't trust any of them knowing your secrets. You-
Dr. Grigori: This interrogation is not about me. Now please, how can you read such things as souls? (pause) Who exactly are you? What exactly are you? Please, tell me.
SCP-5465-1: Call me limbo. (subject adjusts jerkin) I am the guide of spirits. I am the destination of all life after their host wears out. Everyone will come to me eventually.
Dr. Grigori: A guide…… (adjusting of microphone) What do you mean "host"? And destination? Please, start from the beginning. Where did you come from? Why are you in a projector?
SCP-5465-1: I came from life. When life began I came into being as a guide! Every spirit, once they have exhausted their host, will come to Limbo for their final travel. I chat with such spirits. We walk and talk and for me it is but a fraction of a minute, while for you it is a life time. (laughter) And as for how I came to be in such a marvelous host? My old host was a mirror that shattered. I moved to this projector as it was sitting in the area. This is a much more reliable host.
Dr. Grigori: So you move from these hosts as a sort of possession? Does this pertain to non-organic material or are you able to possess organic material as well?
SCP-5465-1: You are aware of stories of god-send priests and priestesses in tribal culture, yes? Those who could speak to those in the afterlife.
Dr. Grigori: You possessed them so they could perform their "miracles"?
SCP-5465-1: Yes.
Dr. Grigori: You also said you can talk with these spirits in the afterlife. Am I permitted to speak to one of the dead? Forgive me, but I need to find out as much as I can about you.
SCP-5465-1: It is quite alright. I understand your thirst for knowledge. First though, I must correct you. I am not the afterlife and I can not speak to those in the afterlife. I am a bridge between the living realm and the life beyond. You must keep that in mind. And for your second statement, yes, I can bring one of the souls forward if you wish to speak to them. Is there anyone you wish to speak to specifically?
Dr. Grigori: Yes, bring forward the spirit of..err…Martin Luther King Jr.
SCP-5465-1: I am sorry, Dr. Grigori, but that is something I am unable to do.
Dr. Grigori: Unable? But you just said you could. Why are you unable?
SCP-5465-1: I have many reasons.
Dr. Grigori: Please, explain why you are unable. Is there a God or an unseen force stopping you?
SCP-5465-1: We have our own regulations, but I have no God. [DATA EXPUNGED] [REIMPLEMENTED]
Dr. Grigori: Fascinating… I have one more question for you.
SCP-5465: Ask away.
Dr. Grigori: Are you Limbo, or are you part of it? We have our own idea of what Limbo truly is, and I want to make it clear if you are Limbo as in the place, or if that is simply your title.
SCP-5465: Excellent question! I am both limbo, and not Limbo. Limbo is the place that is this (the figure gestures around itself) and Limbo needed a soul to project itself through. Someone to walk and talk with the deceased. I, limbo, am that someone. Limbo works through me, but I am a separate being from the place.
Dr. Grigori: Thank you for answering. That definitely clears a bit up. Thank you for your time. You may go.
(Figure bows with a smile. Whirling of Photo-wheel and static died down as the projection vanished.)
[END LOG]
Investigation note: It has been stated that the host that SCP-5465 can possess does not need to be organic/non-organic, but simply needs to agree to share a host. Inanimate objects such as a mirror or appliances will be items SCP-5465 will possess without agreement. Organic or spirit-driven objects are possessable, but only to the spirits agreement. To avoid accidental joining of SCP's, SCP-5465 is to be kept away from other anomalies.
Interview 5465.2: Interruption
SCP-5465 was brought back into an interview room a week after the first interview for further interrogation. The interview between Dr. Grigori and SCP-5465-1 was cut short due to a minor containment breach by SCP-████
Log 2 - Date: 7/30/20██
Subject: SCP-5465(-1)
Conducted by: Dr. Grigori
Procedure: SCP-5465 was put before Dr. Grigori in an empty interview chamber. Conducted the same as the first interview.
Results: Small amount of information on SCP-5465 was obtained. Interview was cut short due to a minor containment breach of SCP-██
[LOG START]
Dr. Grigori: (Movement) Bienvenue, SCP-5465-1. Will you please activate for our interview.
SCP-5465-1: (Slow turning of photo-wheel. Faint static noise as SCP-5465-1 was projected on the wall). Greeting again, Nikolas! I expected another meeting sooner than this.
Dr. Grigori: (laughter) Yes, yes. I was going to interview you again but I had to analyze our conversation. We talked a lot last time, and I need to make sure everything is in order before we have another talk.
SCP-5465-1: And what have you deduced from your results?
Dr. Grigori: I have several theories I want to practice, but I'll start with this: Do you possess any ways of self protection? Do you harm others to save yourself the same way a human does? Are you able to fend off those who wish to destroy your host or are you incapable of aggression entirely?
SCP-5465-1: While harming people disgusts me, no, I am not unable to defend myself. My passive defense is quite effective. (figure fixes hair) Tch- You humans often think defending yourself involves excessive violence. It doesn't matter if you kill someone to protect your own life. Your soul will still become corrupt. The universe does not incorporate emotion in its judgment it incorporates facts. If you have killed, then your soul is tainted.
Dr. Grigori: Exactly what I thought. Now, what about the janitor at the museum of █████? His corpse shown no signs of internal trauma but he was undoubtably deceased. What did you do to him?
SCP-5465-1: The depressed man? (SCP-5465-1 fussed with a string on its jerkin) Death itself is the removal of a soul from a host and it shifting away from the physical plane. The man was unhappy.
Dr. Grigori: I understand, but what did you do to him?
SCP-5465-1: (no response) It is not easy to talk about. He doesn't want anyone to know. I'm sorry.
Dr. Grigori: You must tell me so I can further understand your properties. If you hide information I will be forced to extract it from you. Don't make this ha-
(Breach alarm)
Dr. Grigori: Damned! All right limbo, back to your containment cell. We will continue talking later. (The whirling of the photo-wheel stops as Dr. Grigori carefully carries SCP-5465 out of the interview chamber.)
[END LOG]
Investigation note: At least we learned something interesting. Further tests and interrogations will need to be performed. - Dr. Grigori.
Test 5465.3: Test: #1
Dr. Sherman was brought to Site-73 for a test between himself and SCP-5465-1. Dr. Sherman was instructed to bring forward the spirit of his colleague, Dr. Hamm.
Log 3- Date: 8/10/20██
Subject: SCP-5465(-1)
Conducted by: Dr. Sherman
Procedure: SCP-5465 was placed in an interrogation room with Dr. Theron Sherman. No one else was present. All dialog was recorded for study.
Results: Test proven successful. Dr. Hamm was communicated with and both him and Dr. Sherman shared a conversation.
[LOG START]
Dr. Sherman: SCP-5465, activate for testing.
SCP-5465-1: (slow turning of projection photo-whee. Faint static noise as SCP-5465-1 was projected on the wall) Greetings Theron Sherman. Where is Dr. Grigori? I enjoy my conversations with him.
Dr. Sherman: I am the one conducting the experiment today. Dr. Grigori is busy with a project of his, but I can assure you he is perfectly fine. I was instructed to ask you a question.
SCP-5465-1: A question you give and an answer you shall receive. (pause). You are doubting yet you are scared? Are you scared that this test will work or doubting it will fail?
Dr. Sherman: Yeah, I read that little bit about soul reading in the logs. Now, show me the spirit of Dr. Raymond Hamm.
SCP-5465-1: A friend of yourself and a good soul. He wouldn't mind talking to you he says. Very well, enjoy your conversation. (The projection disappeared and in its place materialized the figure of Dr. Hamm.)
Dr. Sherman: Raymond!
Dr. Hamm: -
Dr. Sherman: It is good to see you again as well. I'm sorry for what SCP-049 did to you. You never des-
Dr. Hamm: -
Dr. Sherman: Don't say that! The monster had no idea what it was doing and murdered you for nothing. You are a man of science, not an experiment like him!
Dr. Hamm: -
Dr. Sherman: What do you mean? Are you siding with SCP-049?
Dr. Hamm: -
Dr. Sherman: If you know what it is then tell me. What exactly did SCP-049 cure you of?
Dr. Hamm: -
Dr. Sherman: Blasphemy. I can't keep something like that hidden from the Foundation. This conversation is over. SCP-5465-1, take away this apparition. The test is over.
Dr. Hamm: - (The figure of Dr. Hamm opened its arms to Dr. Sherman)
Dr. Sherman: I'm not going to wherever you want. Leave!
Dr. Hamm: -
(The turning of the photo-wheel died down and the static stopped. The figure of Dr. Hamm and the white background disappeared.)
[END LOG]
Investigation Note: Dr. Sherman confided a small bit of information concerning SCP-5465. This information was told to Dr. Sherman by the late Dr. Hamm, however most of the information Dr. Sherman was physically unable to articulate/write. It can be confirmed that SCP-5465 is some form of pathway to the afterlife, and that the entity (SCP-5465-1) has some control over souls and the world it resides in. It can be presumed that Limbo is the "white light" some people claim to see when they are close to passing away.
Test 5465.4: Test: #2
D-91874 was brought into a room with SCP-5465. D-91874 was instructed to approach SCP-5465 and touch the projector. The anomaly shown signs of confusion, anger, and resentment throughout the test.
Log 4 - Date: 8/16/20██
Subject: SCP-5465(-1)
Conducted by: Dr. Grigori
Procedure: SCP-5465 was placed in an interrogation room with several pillows around the projector. D-91874, convicted of murder, was brought into the interrogation room and instructed to attempt to touch the anomaly. DR. Grigori was in a separate room and talked over an intercom.
Results: Knowledge of SCP-5465(-1) was gained and D-91874 was rendered handicapped. Further tests will be required.
[LOG START]
Dr. Grigori: D-91874, will you please move forward to SCP-5465 and attempt to touch it. You may encounter some resistance but please continue to advance.
D-91874: Resistance from these things ain't good news. Guessing I'm either gonna lose an arm or a leg, eh?
Dr. Grigori: I understand your fear, but I assure you that you will survive. SCP-5465 is extremely docile and has a high regard for human life. You will live, you have my word.
D-91874: Alright doc, but if I die I'm haunting your house. (the D-class moves forward. At the same time SCP-5465 activated. The projected figure looked at D-91874)
SCP-5465-1: I'm sorry sir, but I must ask you to back away. Murderers are not permitted near Limbo.
Dr. Grigori: Continue, D-91874.
SCP-5465-1: Nikolas! (The figure spreads its arms attempting to cover up the pure white background. The backdrop let off a faint hissing.) Are you permitting this corrupt soul near me? Have you forgotten what I have told you?
Dr. Grigori: This is a test, limbo. I can't believe anything you've said without facts backing it up. D-91874, continue your approach.
D-91874: I'm just doing what I'm told. Doc says you don't kill men so what do I gotta be scared of? (D-91874 stood arms length away from SCP-5465.)
SCP-5465-1: Don't touch me, fiend! (The blank white background behind SCP-5465-1 appeared to ripple as it glowed brightly. A shining screaming sphere of white light shot from the background of SCP-5465-1. The sphere encompassed D-91874 and brought him to the ground; speaking in mumbled sentences and phrases as it continued to swirl angrily. After 7 seconds the orb returned to SCP-5465-1's background.)
D-91874: Loud bastards…bright too. Doc, turn on the lights won't you? (D-91874 carefully stood up.) Did you hear me, Doc. Turn on the lights.
Dr. Grigori: The lights are on. Perhaps the anomaly damaged your eyes. Find your way to the wall and I will have someone examine your retinas. SCP-5465-1, forgive me for my rudeness, but I needed to find out what would happen if a corrupt soul interacted with you. I hope you understand.
SCP-5465-1: (faint whispers could be heard from the projection. The rippling backdrop grew more violent as distorted faces could be seen forming between folds in Limbo.) I gave you our rules, did I not? And you broke them.
Dr. Grigori: I know I did, but don't you forget that you are a prisoner here. I will perform tests that I deem necessary. Your word is not fact to us.
SCP-5465: I can be trusted! I carry the weight of all life on my shoulders! Why would I lie about my existence? I have answered everything you asked of me in the full truth.
Dr. Grigori: All except the fate of Mr. Mane. How do I know you have told the truth this whole time? Maybe you've lied. Maybe you are a killer. Maybe Limbo is a hell-scape. Nothing but painful blinding light that burns the skin and irritates the eyes!
SCP-5465: (The whispers roared to a congregation of angry hisses.) Limbo is a safe place for the people who have suffered on your world. They come here with their head in their hands, and they share their sorrow with me. I am the only kindness they will find after death! I am no killer, and I am no liar. You have angered the dead, Nikolas. Be careful when you leave your world and come into this one. (The whirling photo wheel stopped. The projection vanished from the wall.)
[END LOG]
Investigation Note: D-91874 was rendered permanently blind due to burned retinas. D-91874 stated that he felt no pain from his eyes, but is annoyed at the loss of his sight.
Addendum 5465.1: Dr. Grigori's Hypothesis.
Proposition 5465
Proposal: Increase the security measures on SCP-5465.
Presented by: Dr. Nikolas Grigori
Directed at: Head of Department
Conclusion: Accepted
Date: 8/17/20██

____________________________________
To ██████ ████: I must implore that you increase the security measures regarding SCP-5465. Normally, an anomaly as docile as SCP-5465 doesn't require strict containment measures. However, I believe that SCP-5465 has some capabilities that it is hiding from the foundation. The most prominent I believe to be the ability to move souls on the physical plane. SCP-5465 is hiding the truth behind the death of the night janitor found in front of SCP-5465. He, Mr. Mane, had no signs of external or internal damage. He had no record of serious illnesses or heart problems either. SCP-5465-1 did something to Mr. Mane and is hiding it.
Take into consideration that Mr. Mane is still alive, but outside his body. SCP-5465-1's reaction to the murderous D-class did not seem like a ruse so I truly believe a "corrupt" soul is not allowed near Limbo. While the idea that SCP-5465-1 could have killed Mr. Mane isn't out of the question, it seems unlikely as killing Mr. Mane would most likely contaminate SCP-5465-1 in some way. If SCP-5465-1 has control over souls in Limbo then it is not farfetched that it has control over souls in our reality.
This brings me to the idea I fear most: that SCP-5465-1 can, in some way, create anomalies. SCP-5465-1 has an effect on souls. If it can forcibly remove them from a host then it can perhaps forcibly put said soul into an object. What if some of the SCP's we have in our possession are really just souls trapped in a strange host. SCP-5465-1 might not intentionally make these anomalies but it could still be the cause of their existence. To prevent possible anomalies being made, or anomalies to change hosts, SCP-5465 should have increased containment measures. - Dr. Nicolas Grigori.

Response
____________________________________
Dr. Grigori, I have reviewed your letter and has decided to accept your proposal. Anomalies can be dangerous and unpredictable, and sometimes increased measures of containment are necessary even if the anomaly is not immediately dangerous. The idea that SCP-5465-1 could create new SCP's is alarming. While not shown, I will go on your word that it could possibly happen. I will also decrease the number of those who can access the logs and keep this letter between us and my superiors. - ██████ ████
Addendum 5465.2: Refusal
To this date, SCP-5465-1 refuses to communicate verbally with any human being. The anomaly shows signs of it still using the Pettibone projector as a host by swirling the photo wheel around upon being directly spoken too. The figure, however, refuses to project itself onto any surface and refuses to speak, even when commanded too. It is uncertain when SCP-5465-1 will communicate with the foundation again. Until further notice the anomaly is to be kept in its locked containment cell.
We will find a way to communicate with the anomaly either externally or internally. I fear the internal interrogation of the anomaly would reveal the most about it, but I am unsure how to execute such a plan. However, I promise more will be known about SCP-5465 in due time. We are scientists, and it is our duty to uncover the hidden answers. - Dr. Grigori
