Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX items are to be contained within a Level 2 low-utility reinforced containment unit. To properly house all SCP-XXXX instances, a unit of roughly 12 square meters is needed. Each SCP-XXXX instance has a respective crankshaft, which is to be stored separately from its instance, contained within a safe or locked box. Crankshafts can be re-attached to their SCP-XXXX instances for testing purposes.

Description: Currently forty nine (49) instances of SCP-XXXX have been recovered (designated SCP-XXXX-XX). Each instance of SCP-XXXX resembles an antique classical Bavarian cuckoo clock. The clocks are 25cm x 37cm x 10cm, weighing approximately 6.5kg. SCP-XXXX is gravity powered and requires winding in order to function. For this reason, unwound instances of SCP-XXXX are considered safe to handle. Once wound, SCP-XXXX will keep proper time and only reveal anomalous properties when signaling the change of hour.

The hourly chime produced by SCP-XXXX is unique to each listener. The melody can vary greatly (see Testing and Recovery logs) but will play for 3 - 12 seconds. The chime itself can be heard as any instrument, vocalization, or combination there-of. The chiming mechanism consists of a single brass air chamber which holds air for expulsion from a whistle. SCP-XXXX contains no digital speakers nor any other mechanical method for producing its array of noise. Due to the failure of the mechanical features to account for its behavior, and the variation in observed sound between listeners, this object is considered anomalous. Audio recordings of the chime do not contain this anomalous property. Recordings play back a single note (E) at 85db held for the duration of the chime. Based on this observation it is theorized that SCP-XXX telepathically plays its melody to the listener.

All listeners display intense pleasure in hearing the chime(s). Over time, those within consistent earshot will become enamored with SCP-XXXX, often being compelled to obtain it2. This behavior tends to start with benign changes to ones schedule (to be near the clock) and ends with the listener refusing to leave the vicinity of SCP-XXXX. This compulsion has the potential to result in serious harm or even death of a subject, as they will prioritize listening to the chime over basic bodily needs. Individuals with a prior history of aggressive behavior will become violent when attempts are made to separate them from SCP-XXXX after extended contact. Whether this behavior is due to additional anomalous nature of SCP-XXXX, or is rooted in normal addiction behaviors (overuse of reward pathways in brain) is inconclusive.

Most subjects suffering effects from SCP-XXXX will recover after extended time separated from SCP-XXXX, however permanent changes to mood or behavior are common.

The following table contains descriptions of SCP-XXXX's melodies from personnel engaged in the recovery of SCP-XXXX.

Subject Perceived Melody Notes
Field Agent ████████ Listener described chime as: “A chime purer than I could ever imagine. It covers every octave; I can feel it inside me when it plays.”

Field Agent ███ Listener described chime as a portion of "Komm, süßer Tod"

Field Agent ███'s regular psychological health screening moved to following week.

Agent ████ (███) Listener described chime as: "…pretty sure that's from the site karaoke night. Without a doubt the best work event we ever did…"

Listener stated he was intoxicated during karaoke night and did not remember this specific song. Event was held off-site.

Agent █████████ Listener described chime as: portion of "Ain't no mountain High enough" by Martin Gaye.

N/A

██████ County Sherriff, ██████ ███████ Listener described chime as a segment from his daughter's recorder recital two weeks prior.

Class A Amnesiacs administered.

Below is an audio recording of SCP-XXXX's chime. Said audio has been screened for safety by the Memetics Department. All recordings of SCP-XXXX are identical in sound to this one, and only vary in length. This recording was made of SCP-XXXX chiming for '4:00AM'.
