Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5044 is to be stored in a standard containment unit for inactive anomalous technology. While active, SCP-5044-1 is only to be viewed through an anti-memetic filter to eliminate risk of retro causality to the prime timeline. Given the nature of retro causality is is currently unknown how many times SCP-5044-1 has affected the timeline but given its extensive study before these containment procedures were put in place it is highly probable that the timeline has been altered at least once by SCP-5044-1. Those viewing SCP-5044-1 are to be monitored by a computer system with exclusively volatile memory capable of delivering amnestics if it detects information marked with a timestamp past the current date.
Research of SCP-5044-2 is restricted to level 4 personnel. In the event that SCP-5044-2 is successfully repaired or reverse engineered it is not to be activated within 5 light years of earth.
Description: SCP-5044 is the collective designation for 2 pieces of technology recovered from the town of Chicxulub, Mexico. SCP-5044-1 is a computer terminal determined to be ~66 million years old. SCP-5044-1 holds information in a partially deciphered language pertinent to the construction and operation of what is colloquially known as a time machine. The described device is thought to be capable of moving an arbitrary time into the past or future but requiring exponentially more energy the further from the current date it moves. SCP-5044-1 also contains on it various logs of travel to different time periods. Most of these logs signify travel to a period of 100 to 1 years before its construction date. A timeline is also found indicating the rise and fall of various intelligent species on earth. Translating these dates standard time shows civilizations at 67mya to 65mya, 30mya to 35mya, █mya to █████BCE, and 10,000BCE to █CE. It is of note that █mya to █████BCE corresponds to the hypothesized period scp-████ was the dominant species. Several test logs indicate successful travel and return of expeditions to each of the notes periods.
SCP-5044-2 is thought to be an antimatter reactor with its gravitational containment grid heavily damaged by a nearby antimatter explosion. Blueprints for SCP-5044-2 have been found on SCP-5044-1 however given the fragmentary translation SCP-5044-2 is yet to be repaired. The current belief is that if SCP-5044-2 was successfully repaired and connected to SCP-317-3 humanoids with limited supplies could be sent through time to the corresponding physical location on earth in that time period. Despite the potential benefits this provides, the dangers of an antimatter explosion or retro causal paradoxes are too great to be currently explored.

December 17th 2016: foundation scientists investigate the town of Chicxulub, Mexico for reported gravitational anomalies
January 3rd 2017: SCP-5044 is discovered approximately .5 km below the ground 20 km East of the town center
January 4th 2017: Excavation of SCP-5044 commences under the cover story of Native American archaeological dig
January 20th 2017: SCP-5044 is fully recovered and sent to site ██. The surrounding area is determined to be devoid of further anomalies and all foundation personnel are resigned to active projects.

Coordinates: current date+65 million years
Dominant species is a highly derived mammalian. They possess a mastery of technology rivaling even our own. Our physics is much more advanced but they have a control over biology that’s incredible. They’ve gone far past the point of elimination disease. Everything here is partially organic. Their buildings, if you can even call them that, move location and architecture at the will of the occupants. Not a single artifact I’ve examined has had any kind of tooling mark on it. I wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t seen it. It’s like their entire civilization grew out of the ground. What’s even more incredible is that according to the drones we’ve sent further into the future than me they go nearly extinct and a new species arises in just a few thousand years. How could a whole civilization, let alone on this advanced, be completely overthrown so fast and so completely? I guess that’s what I’ll have to find out when I go to the next era. That won’t be for a while though, I figure I have to explore here a few more times before moving on. Since there’s apparently a dominance shift in the near future we’re going to be especially careful that whatever comes next doesn't kill me. I’m not sold on the idea whatever is next is dangerous because there’s no way this species could be killed outright. Still, the reconnaissance drones were incredibly vague on what actually went on in these two neighboring civilizations and how this one apparently got overthrown.

I figured out why the reconnaissance drones sent here came back with such little information. The computers here, just like everything else, are organic. We figured interfacing with technology from a completely different species would be hard but this is more like reading a mind. Bottom line is that we’ve managed to interface with them well enough that I can get readings of their “computers” and partially translate it.

We’ve been working on this for [undecipherable, closest translation is likely weeks] and still can’t figure out what’s going to kill them off. We could eliminate the natural stuff easily, with the recovered information we can confidently say nothing natural would be able to kill this species. Even something on the astronomical level they would probably be able to predict long enough in advance to diverge it or escape the planet. There is another intelligent species, we knew there had to be given how close the two civilizations are in time but they aren’t a threat. They number in the low hundred thousands. The idea of them taking over by force is laughable. They barely have language. The only thing we can figure out without going further into the future is that nothing threatens them but somehow, for some reason, they disappear. Gone without a trace in a few thousand years. Well it certainly is frustrating but this does mean I get to travel into the next era. We still aren’t sure it’s safe but without a clear sign of danger there’s no reason not to go.
