Item #: SCP-3583

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-3583 must be contained in a well-lit, windowless room with the minimum dimensions of 5 x 5 x 5 meters and a 2 x 3 meter airlock door. The hall that connects to the cell must also be well lit to prevent a containment breach if the creature exits its cell. If personnel must enter the creature’s cell, no less than five must enter. It is required for the subjects to carry a 100-watt flashlight each to prevent its escape. Ballistic suits are optional if the subjects feel the need for protection. The creature must be located before entering. Two subjects must stand at the exit while shining the lights in. Two subjects must stand at the Southeast and Southwest extremeties of the cell while directing the light to the direction of the object. One employee must conduct the job.

SCP-3583 must be fed at least 50 kilograms of live meat a week to ensure its survival. A live pig is recommended. During feeding, a shaft shall open leading into the cell to allow its food to enter. At this time, a member of the personnel shall shine a flashlight into the shaft to prevent the creature’s escape. The shaft is small enough to only require one source of light. No cleaning is required after feeding, as the creature consumes its meals entirely.

Description: SCP-3583 is a slender bipedal creature that has only been identified through its silhouette. The creature hides in a cloud of nonlethal vantablack gas (SCP-3583-1) that is emitted through large pores on its back. SCP-3583-1 can only be restrained via bright light (see Experiment 3583-1). A light with enough intensity will penetrate this cloud and reach its skin (i.e. sunlight). This may cause SCP-3583 to receive severe or even fatal burns (see Addendum 2). The chemical formula of SCP-3583-1 is currently unknown.

SCP-3583 hides in dark caves or rooms. It lures its prey into its cloud by imitating sounds that the victim might follow (i.e. cries of help, shrieks, friendly calls, etc.) Once the victim comes into contact with SCP-3583-1, the creature will attack and heavily mutilate its prey. Light is unable to prevent this attack (see Incident 3583-1). It then consumes the body and any substance that came from it. The amount of food the creature consumes determines the density of the gas emitted from its body. The creature will not consume anything other than live prey. It does not appear to need direct water to survive.

Addendum 1: No photographic evidence currently exists of this specimen.

Addendum 2: The foundation contained two (2) objects classified SCP-3583. On November 27th, 198█, one of the objects escaped. The object managed to reach the exits. The creature exit the facility, where it was killed by sunlight. The carcass was disfigured heavily by burns, causing it to be unsalvageable. Later reports state the creature escaped due to a flashlight malfunctioning. At this time, hall lights were not required, and only three personel were required. This was later updated.

Incident 3583-1 Log

<Begin Tape>

Experiment-3583-1 commenced on October 17th, 199█ by Dr. D████ (experiment supervisor) and Dr. Z█████ (testing). The goal of the experiment was to find out the chemical formula of SCP-3583-1. The following log describes an incident that occurred while collecting samples of SCP-3583-1. Four (4) D-Class personnel were used to contain SCP-3583. One (1) D-Class subject was used to collect samples of SCP-3583-1. This subject will be referred to as D1 in the log.

Dr. D████: All personnel, assume positions. On the ready, the cell will be opened. Prepare the lights.

D1 (via radio): We seem to be ready. Open it.

The doors are opened.

D1: Status on the object?

Dr. D████: The object is against the northwest corner. Proceed the collection.

D1: Alright. Keep those lights shining there, you four. I’ll collect the sample meanwhile.

Dr. D████: Report your status every three (3) seconds.

D1: Understood. Heartbeat is at 127 BPM. Body temperature at 36.5 degrees. External temperature seems less than 5 degrees.

D1: Heartbeat 134 BPM. Body temp, 30 degrees. External temp, 0. Collecting sample.

Several seconds have passed

Dr. D████: What’s your status?

Dr. D████: Respond.

D1 [ALTERED FROM STUTTER]: Heartbeat ███ BPM. Body temp, ██ degrees. External temp, -██ degrees. Oh God, I can’t move. Holy shit, I feel its hand on my arm. It’s so cold. It burns. Oh God, it’s taking me. I see its face, oh God. Shit, I can’t feel my legs. I think it took my legs, oh fuck.

Dr. D████ (to D-Class personnel): Exit the cell, I’m locking the door.

A scream is heard

D1: Oh God, it’s [DATA EXPUNGED]— help me—

At this point, the screaming stops. It is assumed D1 was [DATA EXPUNGED]. It was also concluded that light cannot prevent attack once the subject has direct contact with SCP-3583-1.

<End Tape>

Addendum 3: The sample was recovered successfully. Experiment 3583-1 continued on January 4th, 199█.

Addendum 4: Request to modify class of SCP-3583 from Euclid to Keter on October 18th, 199█. Request denied by O5-██.

Experiment 3583-1 Results

Subject: SCP-3583-1, sample size 10 mL.

Tests Performed: Effects of Light, Chemical Formula test, Effects of Freezing, temperature test.

Results: SCP-3583-1 was tested with five light environments (Sun, 100-watt flashlight, commercial lightbulb, candle, darkness). SCP-3583-1 reacted instantaneously to solar light. Solar light destroyed the sample in approximately 2.36 seconds. SCP-3583-1 reacted instantaneously to the 100-watt flashlight at a distance of .3 meters. The light caused the object to react violently. Seems to cause pain to the object. Observation note: the gas seemed to stick to the side of the test tube opposite to the direction of the light. The sample was destroyed in approximately 3.2 minutes at .3 meters. Past 10 meters, the sample returns to its calm state. SCP-3583-1 did not react to commercial lightbulb at 10 cm. The gas reacted minorly at a distance of <9 cm. SCP-3583-1 did not react to candle light at any distance. When gas came into contact with candle flame, the candle extinguished. SCP-3583-1 is most active in dark environments (night vision used to conclude data). The gas managed to [DATA EXPUNGED] in darkness.

Multiple tests were conducted in order to determine chemical formula of SCP-3583-1. None successful. Temporary conclusions place SCP-3583-1 in Dark Matter category.

SCP-3583-1 was placed in freezer with temperature of -100 degrees celsius for periods of 5, 10, 24 and 72 hours. At 5 hours, the sample entered its active state (this was concluded to be caused by the lack of light in the freezer). At 10 hours, the sample entered its active state. At 24 hours, the sample entered its calm state. At 72 hours, the sample remained in its calm state. Different temperatures were tested with similar results.

The temperature of SCP-3583-1 was tested on three different samples, with average of -███ degrees celsius.

Conclusion: Lights that emit over 10,000 lumens destroy SCP-3583-1 within seconds. Lights that emit within 5,000 and 2,000 lumens deter SCP-3583-1. The chemical formula of SCP-3583-1 cannot be determined using current technology. Cold temperatures cannot be used to neutralize SCP-3583-1, as the temperature of the gas exceeds any technologically possible cooling temperature.
