Item #: SCP-3911

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-3911 is to be kept locked in a mechanical safe and is to be kept at least 5 meters away from all types of computers and electronics. The safe in which SCP-3911 is kept is accessible by a passcode only available to level 3 research personnel and higher. This passcode will be changed to a new random passcode at the end of each week.

In the event of a containment breach that does NOT result in any of the four possible types of a 3911-11 instance, is simply to be placed back into its safe with no actions taken.

In the event of a containment breach that results in an instance of 3911-1, all personnel affected are to be confined. Further, three methods of remedy exist depending on the type of 3911-1 instance that occurs.

  • In the event of an instance of 3911-G, the affected individual is to be confined and kept to a rigorous rehabilitation schedule. Only after symptoms of 3911-G have extinguished, and stay extinct for at least two consecutive weeks, can the individual be released.
  • In the event of an instance of 3911-B, class C personnel and lower are to be confined until their deaths. Class B personnel and above are to be confined and administered class C amnestics. If after two weeks, 3911-B symptoms still persist, they are to continue being confined until their deaths. All recorded instances of 3911-B that prove to be unaffected by class C amnestics have also proven to be unaffected by anything stronger.
  • In the event of an instance of 3911-O or 3911-N, psychological confinement is to be enforced for at least two weeks with daily psychological assessment. If no abnormal mental processes develop during this time, the affected individual is allowed to released but under close surveillance for at least 1 month following release.

SCP-3911 is currently stored at Area-42B in the Cognitohazardous Object Containment Block (Sector-8) of the Nonbiological Items Minora Research & Containment Unit (42B-N).

Description: SCP-3911 is a cognitohazardous artifact identical to a hard-copy disc of the ‘Brave New World’ expansion pack for the historical turn-based strategy video-game 'Sid Meier's Civilization V'. SCP-3911 is consistent in its appearance with the artwork and details of an otherwise non-anomalous copy of ‘Brave New World’, so to avoid potential containment breaching, a label has been applied to SCP-3911.2 No case for the disc was found, and SCP-3911 is currently assumed to consist exclusively of the disc itself with no case.

SCP-3911 only displays its anomalous properties when installed to a computer. When not being used, or even when placed in a computer but not installed, SCP-3911 fails to display any anomalous properties. Because of this, SCP-3911 may be handled without special procedures when not around computerized electronics.

When installed to a computer capable of running an otherwise non-anomalous copy of ‘Brave New World’, SCP-3911 triggers an instance of 3911-1.

Four different types of 3911-1 instances exist:

  • 3911-G: When a subject installs SCP-3911 onto a computer that already has the base-game 'Civilization V' installed onto it, an instance of 3911-G (colloquially termed the ‘Good-type’) is triggered. Upon a completed installation, 3911-G immediately begins to project a video resembling a low-quality home-recording. The video will be an assortment of childhood memories that the subject always regards to be their fondest. In every observation, 3911-G has always been noted as being exactly 2 hours and 45 minutes long. After ending, the subject (regardless of how much of 3911-G they watched), will report feeling very optimistic and happy. Within 2—6 hours of viewing 3911-G, the subject will enter a hypomanic state that lasts for approximately a week. When this hypomanic state ends, the subject will start to display symptoms of addiction and withdrawal. The subject will go to inordinate lengths to regain possession of SCP-3911 and may resort to violence to do so. After approximately one week, the addiction will be broken, and the subject will be able to reintegrate into their normal lives.
  • 3911-O: When a subject installs SCP-3911 onto a computer that has a previous 'Civilization' title that is a predecessor to the fifth installment of the series (i.e. titles I, II, III, and/or IV), an instance of 3911-O (colloquially termed the ‘Old-type) is triggered. Upon a completed installation, whichever title is installed onto the computer will run as normal, and the game itself will be completely playable and functional. The instance of 3911-O will affect the title’s game-play as if the ‘Brave New World’ expansion pack was developed specifically for that game. In other words, all the added features and game-play elements featured in the expansion pack will be implemented into these earlier installments of the series. However, these changes will only be implemented within the limiting parameters of the game itself (e.g. graphical/audio effects will not be changed, but features found on the expansion pack will become present in the title in as long as they do not exceed the title’s processing parameters). No hazardous affects have been observed to affect any personnel who has interacted with an instance of 3911-O.
  • 3911-B: When a subject installs SCP-3911 onto a computer that has no 'Civilization' titles installed onto it, an instance of 3911-B (colloquially termed the ‘Bad-type’) is triggered. Upon a completed installation, 3911-B immediately begins to project a video resembling a low-quality home-recording (one of even lower quality than an instance of 3911-G). The video will be a single viewing of whichever memory the subject regards to be their most traumatic childhood experience. In every observation, 3911-B has always been noted as being exactly 45 seconds long. After ending, the subject (regardless of how much of 3911-B they watched), will report feeling unbearably terrified and melancholic. Within 30 minutes of viewing 3911-B, the Player will enter a depressive/psychotic state. The depressive/psychotic state does not end and will affect the subject until they enter a permanent vegetative state, or until they are effectively treated with amnestics. Otherwise, the subject will be driven to kill themselves and will resort to extreme measures to do so. After approximately 3-6 days, if the subject has not been able to kill themselves, they will collapse dead. Inspection of the corpse after death shows that the subject’s cause-of-death is always a combination of extreme exhaustion, stress, and fatigue. Further inspection shows severe damage in the heart and the medial temporal lobe of the brain. The extent of the damage usually resembles that of intense blunt-force trauma and it is believed that [REDACTED] it is unknown how these injuries occur within the victims.
  • 3911-N: When a subject installs SCP-3911 onto a computer that has a 'Civilization' title that is a successor to the fifth installment of the series (i.e. title VI), an instance of 3911-N (colloquially termed the ‘New-type') is triggered. Upon a completed installation, the computer running SCP-3911 will immediately shut-down. When the computer is turned back on, all files on the computer will be replaced by instances of 3911-N, including whichever ‘Civilization’ title was already installed onto the computer to begin with. Because of this, the 'Civilization' will no longer be installed onto the computer. So if the subject attempts to reopen SCP-3911, the lack of any preexisting titles will trigger an instance of 3911-B rather than 3911-N.

Currently, only this single disc has been identified as an instance of SCP-3911, and no other hard- or digital-copies of 'Brave New World' have been identified as having anomalous properties.

Discovery: SCP-3911 was discovered at the scene of a triple-suicide in █████, Brazil just two weeks after the official release of the ‘Brave New World’ expansion pack’s commercial release.
