Item #: 5843
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5843 is currently contained at site 17. SCP-5843 is to be stored in the center of a euclid-level containment unit with dimensions no smaller than fifteen meters long by fifteen meters wide by ten meters tall. The floor of the containment unit is to have a five meter radius circle painted around the center of SCP-5843 to indicate the safe zone of SCP-5843’s primary memetic effect, and a fifty meter radius circle is to be painted around the center of SCP-5843 to indicate the safe zone of its’ secondary effect. The containment unit is to be equipped with a sprinkler system which is to be activated when an SCP-5843 created instance is created outside of experimentation in order to prevent a containment breach. In the event of a containment breach, the automatic sprinkler and fire suppression system outside of the containment unit will be activated in an attempt to neutralize or hinder escaped SCP-5843 created instances.
No one twelve years of age or younger is to be permitted into SCP-5843’s containment unit except for testing purposes. Testing is not permitted without the clearance of one level three researcher. One guard armed with two 16 oz spray bottles filled with water is to be stationed outside of the containment unit for one week following the most recent test. All personnel used for experimentation are to be accompanied by two armed guards equipped with two half liter spray bottles filled with water until testing is complete unless otherwise requested. After every experiment, the surface of SCP-5843 is to be doused with water and allowed to dry before the next experiment. If the subject is alive at the end of testing, they are to stay fifty meters away from SCP-5843 for one week to prevent a possible containment breach.
Description: SCP-5843 is a 2 meter by 2 meter area of sand contained within oak planks at a height of fifteen centimeters resembling a homemade sandbox. Outside of SCP-5843, the bottom is made of cloth that has so far resisted all attempts to damage it.
When SCP-5843 is interacted with by someone who is older than twelve years of age, SCP-5843 exhibits no anomalous behaviour. When someone twelve years of age or younger comes within five meters of SCP-5843 they contract an uncontrollable urge to play inside it. When interacted with by someone twelve years of age or younger, the sand inside SCP-5843 will begin to mold itself into whatever the subject is imagining, typically ranging between five and fifteen centimeters in height, and act in the way the subject imagines it to act. The created instance is hereby known as SCP-5843-1 (every successive instance created is to be classified as SCP-5843 and the proceeding number followed by the test number). Instances created by SCP-5843’s effect can still function outside of SCP-5843, even if the subject is removed from its vicinity. If an instance created by SCP-5843 is damaged, it is capable of repairing itself using any surrounding sand, regardless of the sand’s origin. Currently, the only known measure of neutralizing instances created by SCP-5843 is to douse it with a watery liquid, causing the sand of SCP-5843 to become less fluid, and then destroying it through physical means.
Subjects affected by SCP-5843 express no desire to leave SCP-5843 or participate in voluntary activities necessary for maintaining life such as eating, drinking, or sleeping, and must be forcibly removed from SCP-5843’s area of effect. Any attempt to remove the subject from SCP-5843 has caused any creations to attack those trying to remove the subject and return the subject inside SCP-5843. Once outside of SCP-5843’s area of effect, subjects have returned to a normal state with no memory of their experience. If left alone, subjects will remain inside SCP-5843 until they die from natural causes, most commonly dehydration. When a subject dies inside SCP-5843, created constructs will fall apart.
Addendum: 5843-1: Experiment Logs
Experiment 5843-1
Experimenter: Dr. James
Subject: Male nine years of age.
Test: Subject asked to enter SCP-5843 and play with the sand. Subject accompanied by Officer David and Officer Ethan, both equipped with two 16 oz spray bottles filled with water.
Results: Upon coming within SCP-5843’s area of effect, subject ran towards SCP-5843 and stepped inside. When subject began playing with the sand, a castle began to form, taking approximately ten seconds to be completed and being approximately fourteen centimeters in height, twenty centimeters in width, and eight centimeters in length, classified SCP-5843-1-2. The castle featured a moat two centimeters deep and half a centimeter wide. Immediately after the completion of the castle, two figures begin to appear thirty centimeters left of the subjects. After approximately three seconds, the two figures were fully formed at a height of six centimeters. One figure, classified as SCP-5843-2-2, appeared to be a medieval knight riding on horseback, the knight itself five centimeters tall, wielding a sword approximately two centimeters long and a shield two centimeters tall and two and a half centimeters wide. The second figure, classified as SCP-5843-3-2, was similar in height, but appeared to be a cloaked figure wielding a bow two centimeters tall and wearing a quiver with approximately twelve arrows one centimeter in length each, also on horseback. As the two figures approached the castle, a bridge over the moat was lowered and allowed the two figures to enter. For the next five minutes activity of an indiscernible nature was observed inside SCP-5843-1-2. At this point subject was asked to leave SCP-5843. Subject did not respond, and did not move from his position. Request was repeated, and again ignored. Security was asked to forcefully remove subject from the area. When security placed their hand upon subject’s shoulder, SCP-5843-2 and -3 exited SCP-5843-1-2 on horseback. SCP-5843-3-2 fired four arrows at Officer Ethan, three of which struck his torso with no effect, and the fourth striking his right eye and causing temporary irritation. Officer David was attacked by SCP 5843-2-2 with its sword, which caused no harmful effects towards Officer David. Officer David retaliated by spraying SCP-5843-2-2 with the water bottle and stomping SCP-5843-2-2 with his foot. During the incident, multiple projectiles were launched out of SCP-5843-1-2, only affecting Officers David and Ethan when hit in the eye. SCP-5843-1 and -3 were subsequently doused and destroyed, and subject was removed from SCP-5843’s vicinity.
Incident report 5843-1: Six days after experiment 5843-1, subject came within fifty meters of SCP-5843. SCP-5843 immediately began to form SCP’s-5843-1-1, -2-1, and -3-1. Security immediately entered the containment unit and neutralized the created instances. It was later determined through small-scale tests that after interactions with SCP-5843, subjects must remain fifty meters away from SCP-5843 for one week due to leaving a memetic imprint of the subject in the sand. SCP-5843’s primary area of effect on individuals is not changed.
Experiment 5843-2
Experimenter: Dr. James
Subject: Female four years of age.
Test: Subject asked to enter SCP-5843 and play with the sand for as long as she liked. Subject was not accompanied by security personnel.
Results: Upon entering SCP-5843’s area of effect, subject entered SCP-5843 and began playing. Almost immediately, the sand began to form into a unicorn ten centimeters in height in approximately seven seconds, classified as SCP-5843-1-2, which began to prance around SCP-5843. subject proceeded to play with SCP-5843-1-2 for seventy-four hours without rest before dying. Immediately upon death, sand began to cover the subject and pull her down. Within seven seconds, the subject was completely submerged. All attempts at locating and retrieving subject’s corpse have failed.
Experiment 5843-3
Experimenter: Dr. James
Subject: Male six years of age.
Test: Subject asked to enter SCP-5843 and play in the sand. Subject was fitted with a tracking device in order to determine the depth of SCP-5843. Subject was not accompanied by security personnel.
Results: Upon entering SCP-4792’s area of effect, subject immediately began playing with SCP-5843. SCP-5843-1-3 took the form of a European dragon eleven centimeters in length and began flying. After seventy-three hours, subject died. Upon death, subject was pulled under the sand of SCP-5843.
Experiment: 5843-4
Experimenter: Dr. James
Subject: ██████ James. Female twelve years of age. Daughter of Dr. James.
Test: Subject’s thirteenth birthday was one day away, and Dr. James wanted to test if SCP-5843’s effect was directly influenced by the subject’s current age. Experiment began eight hours before subject’s birthday. Subject was asked to play inside of SCP-5843 for as long as she wanted. At Dr. James’ insistence, subject was given an IV drip to provide necessary nutrients and hydration for the duration of the experiment, and was accompanied by Officers Oliver, Grant, Bartholomew, and Carter.
Results: Upon coming within SCP-5843’s area of effect, subject entered SCP-5843. Upon entering SCP-5843, the sand began to form into multiple equine figures ranging between ten and fourteen centimeters in height. After six seconds, a total of seven figures, classified SCP-5843-1 through -7-4, were fully formed. SCP-5843-1 through -7 began to act in a manner similar to domestic horses. After eight hours, at 00:00 on February —, 2020, the subject remained inside SCP-5843 without any change in behaviour. Dr. James noted that subject’s time of birth was 19:12, and the test continued. At 19:12 exactly, subject displayed no change in behavior. However, at 19:12:24, SCP-5843-1 through -7-6 dissolved back into SCP-5843 and subject was no longer affected by SCP-5843.
Note: Dr. Isac requested that SCP-1146 be transported to site 17 to observe how SCP-5843 interacts with other SCPs that meet its requirements. Request was denied.
Addendum 5843-2: Acquisition
SCP-5843 came into foundation custody following incident 5843-I of on March ██, 2020. On March ██, 2020, [redacted] contacted emergency responders to assist in removing SCP-5843 from his property. His children (daughter aged nine, son aged twelve) had to be forcefully removed by [redacted], and [redacted] was attacked by SCP-5843 created instances. [redacted] expressed distress during the phone call, and described in detail the creatures that his children were playing with which were now banging on the glass door of his backyard patio trying to get into the house. Agent August, embedded in the local police force, was sent to investigate under the assumption that [redacted] was under the effect of a psychoactive drug. Upon confirming the anomalous behaviour of SCP-5843, the foundation was contacted, and SCP-5843 and its creations were retrieved. The children were treated for minor dehydration and all civilians aware of the incident were issued class-B amnestics. When questioned on the origin of SCP-5843, [redacted] stated that he had made SCP-5843 from scratch using materials he had purchased from the local Home Depot hardware store. Investigation by foundation personnel revealed that the sand was produced by Dr. Wondertainment.
Addendum 5843-3: Audio Transcript
The following audio was found during a raid of a Wondertainment Warehouse in █████, Washington. It is believed to be a radio commercial advertising Wondertainment Wonder Sand which was never broadcast.
"Hey kids! Are you tired of regular, boring old sand? Introducing the brand new Wonder Sand! Just pour it into your old sandbox, and you'll never want to leave! Call 1-800-WONDER to order yours today! That's 1-800-WONDER!".
Calling the number in the advert plays the following audio clip.
"Hey kids! Unfortunately, all of our operators are busy talking to other kids who want their own Wondertainment product! Call back later, and hopefully someone will be available to talk to you! Thanks, and have a wonderful day!".
