Special Containment Procedures: Specimens of SCP-XXXX are to be kept at Biological Research Area-12 in an open range containment zone containing a pine flatwoods habitat. Prey items (rats, rabbits, etc.) are to be provided weekly as a source of food. Activity within the enclosure will be monitored via infrared cameras, and perimeter security is to be delegated to a single guard rotated every four hours. Personnel working within the vicinity of SCP-XXXX are to be equipped with sound-dampening headgear at all times to prevent its anomalous effects.
SCP-XXXX specimens may still exist outside of Foundation knowledge and should be brought back alive if at all possible. Any reports of persons suffering from hallucinatory trauma are to be investigated by members of MTF Eta-11, should they correlate to an encounter with a wild instance.
Description: SCP-XXXX collectively refers to a variant of the species Crotalus adamanteus1. Physically, this subset is indistinguishable from the original, differing only in that SCP-XXXX specimens are of greater size. The largest known specimen of SCP-XXXX2 measures 3.2m in length and weighs 5kg, surpassing the largest known member3 of C. adamanteus.
SCP-XXXX's anomalous effect occurs as part of its threat response, which is consistent with other members of Crotalus, though the sound produced by its rattle represents a cognitohazardous effect. The sound evokes trauma in the cerebrum, and while animals clearly exhibit signs of distress and move away from the instance, humans will report experiencing various sensory hallucinations. Descriptions of these hallucinations vary, but all appear to leave lasting paranoia in those exposed.
Addendum XXXX.I: SCP-XXXX-01 was discovered on 08/15/20██ inhabiting the premises of an abandoned civilian household previously belonging to a Mrs. Morgan Henderson. According to a report by local law enforcement, Mrs. Henderson had called the emergency number roughly two months prior, claiming someone had attempted to break into her home. Responders found her at the scene having locked herself in her room, but could not find the alleged intruder or signs of forced entry. She was questioned by the authorities, and the incident was written off as a result of hallucination. Several weeks later, Mrs. Henderson relocated in light of a string of trespassings made by an unnamed individual in the area, leaving the house vacant.
The Foundation performed an investigation of the site following reports of persons suffering from cerebral trauma while in its vicinity, suggesting anomalous influence. Field agents reconnoitering the premises reported experiencing mild headaches and auditory hallucinations after hearing what was described as a faint rattling noise. Members of Mobile Task Force Eta-11 were assembled as a containment team and sent in, and found SCP-XXXX-01 residing in a burrow beneath the groundwork, alongside what appeared to be three of its offspring. All specimens were removed from the location and transferred to Bio-Research Area 12 where they are now monitored by the Foundation.
Analysis of the nest produced five shed skins not belonging to the recovered instances, indicating that the older of SCP-XXXX-01's offspring have migrated away from the site before discovery. Their whereabouts are currently unknown and are being investigated. Attempts to contact Mrs. Henderson for an inquiry are underway.
Addendum XXXX.II: Level 4 clearance has been given for testing of SCP-XXXX's anomalous effects, with Dr. Elias Barret assigned as project supervisor. Logs may be referred to below for further details.
Addendum XXXX.III: At the time of this writing, SCP-XXXX has been denoted as C. adamanteus var. phantasiae by Foundation biologists, officially distinguishing it from the parent species. [More to be added.]
