Item #: SCP-4258

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4258 Is to be kept within a 5 meter by 5 meter by 2.5 meter secure room located at Site-28. It is to be placed within a frosted glass box (dimensions 0.5 meters by 0.5 meters by 0.5 meters) as to lower but not entirely obstruct visibility. Any monitoring cameras are to record video of extreme low quality and are not to record sound. Any persons exposed to SCP-4258, including D-Class personnel, should never come within direct visual or audio contact with unaffected individuals outside of other test subjects. Audio output devices are to be installed to allow for instruction of test subjects.

Distorted or obstructed visual contact is not advised. Due to the inability to consistently prevent the transfer of information from SCP-4258-1 to foundation personnel, audio contact is strictly prohibited. Anyone known to have made direct visual or audio contact with SCP-4258 or an instance of SCP-4258-1 is to be treated as another instance of SCP-4258-1. Security personnel stationed at SCP-4258’s room or any room containing SCP-4258-1 instances are to wear sound-canceling devices and thin blindfolds, which should allow for the minimum visibility necessary to neutralize a target. Passage in to and out of SCP-4258’s room are to be controlled at a separate location, where in Staff can view camera footage to ensure subject has not contacted SCP-4258.

Revision: An apparatus allowing test subjects within the chamber to answer yes or no questions is to be installed within the chamber following Incident 4258-B. Subjects are not to be removed from SCP-4258’s chamber until termination. This is to be the only way in which subjects are to be observed.

Description: SCP-4258 is a sheet of paper containing 2 sentences written in English which communicate an unknown secret. Samples taken from the paper yield no anomalous properties, but the sheet itself is self-repairing. Tearing, burning, and dissolving have all proven ineffective. Any subject to read the secret, further known as SCP-4258-1, exhibits no anomalous properties, but if the subject attempts to share the secret in any way, all the subject’s private memories will be transferred to those they try to communicate the secret to. Both the instance of SCP-4258-1’s and the persons which the secret was communicated to will experience a mental strain due to this transfer. Subjects with extensive private lives cause substantially more strain than those who do not, and such subjects have caused the termination of both themselves and all individuals to which the secret was communicated to.

Those instances of SCP-4258-1 which have received the memories of another instance of SCP-4258-1, may transfer the cumulative private memories of both themselves and the original instance of SCP-4258-1 until the strain causes termination through ████████████. This makes criminals particularly dangerous, as they will by their nature expose another subject to extreme amounts of private memories, and therefore makes testing with D-Class personnel particularly challenging.

SCP-4258 was discovered on ██████████████, 20██, in █████████, Colorado. A report filed by the ██████ county police detailing the spontaneous death of 7 adolescent females at a slumber party rose the suspicion of the Foundation, and all evidence was retrieved from the police under the guise of an FBI investigation. SCP-4258 was recovered from a typical diary notebook. It was noticed that despite the pages of the notebook being coated in bodily fluid, identified as blood and spinal fluid, SCP-4258 appeared to have avoided any damage. Upon further inspection, Dr. ██████ noted that the page had not faded, and writing had not been smudged or otherwise rendered illegible as had occurred on other pages. After observation, Interview A occurred, resulting in the deaths of multiple foundation personnel and the discovery of SCP-4258’s anomalous properties (see Incident 4258-A). The pen recovered along with the notebook has not reproduced any anomalous effects or shown to hold any anomalous properties and has been put in storage for office use.

Addendum 4258-A: Through experimentation, it has been determined that only persons versed in the English language are effected by SCP-4258. Despite this, those who see or hear any attempted communication of the secret by an instance of SCP-4258-1 are still affected. Further experimentation to understand why SCP-4258 differentiates between these methods of communication is needed. It has been suggested by Dr. ██████ that while a secretive tone cannot be communicated by the paper, it can be communicated through universally understood facial communication, and could therefore affect those who do not speak English. This is further corroborated by Test B. Investigation into other modes of transference is ongoing.

Addendum 4258-B: Interview B suggests that SCP-4258 compels instances of SCP-4258-1 to share the secret. Containment procedures are unaffected by this, but the discovery of the danger of SCP-4258 being of an active nature has project head researcher Dr. ██████ to request SCP-4258 be upgraded to Euclid class.

Incident 4258-A: Immediately following observation of SCP-4258, Interview A occurred. This interview has been shortened due to the occurrence of Incident SCP-4258-A.

Interviewed: Dr. Florence

Interviewer: Dr. ██████, with Dr. █████ assisting.

Foreword: Dr. Florence is questioned by Dr. ████, with assisting Dr. ████ recording any notable discoveries made during initial observation.

<Begin Log>

Interviewer: Alright Dr., answer any questions as concisely as possible and we can finish this interview quick.

Dr. Florence: Yeah, I’m just as hungry for lunch as you are ███████.

Interviewer: Then lets get on with it. Has any cause been discovered for SCP-4258’s effect?

Dr. Florence: No.
Interviewer: Ok. Have any anomalous properties been noted.

Dr. Florence: Yes. The 83’rd page is self-repairing, and has not exhibited any of the damage experienced by other pages.
Interviewer: Ok. Does this page have any other characteristics of note?

The rest of this interview has been expunged. It was at this time Dr. Florence stated the secret written on SCP-4258, causing the death of himself as well as Dr. ██████ and Dr. █████.

Incident 4258-B: Test A Was carried out without any notable events, and has therefore been shortened and inserted in the beginning of this incident report. In summary, D-79946 was exposed to SCP-4258 after having his mouth sewn closed. After the test concluded, D-79946 was escorted by security personnel to his chambers for observation. During escort, D-79946 stared at a member of the escort team for a period of 12 seconds, after which the member began screaming. Both the security personnel and D-79946 were immediately terminated.

Test B

Subject: D-61236, D-49805
Procedure: Following incident SCP-4258-B, two D-Class personnel, D-61236 and D-49805, had their mouths sewn shut and hands restrained and were placed in SCP-4259’s chamber. D-61236 was instructed to read the secret written on SCP-4258. Afterwards, D-61236 was instructed to attempt to communicate the secret through any means.
Results: D-61236 was viewed as starring at D-49805 for 6 seconds, at which time both subjects ███████. Their bodies were later recovered and disposed of.
Analysis: It has been determined that SCP-4258’s secret itself does not have to be told, but rather the intent to tell the secret must be observed by another party.

Interview B

Interviewed: D-31126, two hours post SCP-4258 exposure

Interviewer: Dr. █████

Foreword: Dr. █████ asks D-31126 a series of questions utilizing the Yes/No apparatus in SCP-4258’s chamber

<Begin Log>

Interviewer: I am going to ask you a series of questions. I need you to answer them using the apparatus in front of you. Are you capable of that?

D-31126: (Yes option selected)

Interviewer: Ok. Have you read the writing on the page in the center of the room, as instructed?

D-31126: (Yes option selected)

Interviewer: Ok. Are you feeling abnormal in any way?

D-31126: (Yes option selected)

Interviewer: Alright. And are these abnormalities related to what you read?

D-31126: (Yes option selected)

Interviewer: Was what you read disturbing?

D-31126: (No option selected)

Interviewer: Has what you read made you feel sick in any way?

D-31126: (No option selected)

Interviewer: Has it caused you any pain?

D-31126: (No option selected repeatedly, as if in anger)

Interviewer: Please relax. I am attempting to-

D-31126: (D-31126 Begins banging on chamber walls, and is seen on video attempting to mutilate himself with his teeth)

Closing: At this time D-31126 began writing in his own blood, upon which security personnel were deployed and D-31126 was immediately terminated. It is now known that the first character on SCP-4258 is █.

Addendum 4258-C: It has been requested that SCP-4258 be utilized in an attempt to destroy SCP-682. The rationale behind this request is based in the previous test conducted on SCP-682 with SCP-999. The temporary psychological effect on SCP-682 demonstrates a susceptibility to extreme mental stimuli. If a suitably secretive D-Class personnel is located, the mental strain caused by sharing the secret may be able to eliminate SCP-682. Request is currently pending.
