SCP-XXXX is contained in a depressurized chamber 3 x 5 x 7 meters in size. The temperature inside the chamber must not be higher than 23°C or lower than 19°C. Personnel in contact with SCP-XXXX should be administered Class-Y mnestics to record the contents found and avoid long-term brain damage. Any contents relating to Foundation personnel or its assets must be reported to [DATA EXPUNGED]

SCP-XXXX is contained in a hermetically-sealed vault within the sensitive contents unit of Site-38-A. The temperature inside the chamber must not be higher than 23°C or lower than 19°C. Any individual exposed to SCP-XXXX must receive immediate psychiatric and neurological evaluations. Any unsanctioned media of SCP-XXXX must be confiscated and incinerated afterwards.

As of ██/██/████, further use of SCP-XXXX for testing purposes or otherwise has been prohibited by O5. Any attempts to access the contents of the object must be reported to Site Director Francesco Freire.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a moderately-damaged book dating from approximately the year 1910. Its dimensions are 22cm in length and 17cm in width. As of ██/██/2011, the thickness of SCP-XXXX is 26 cm.

SCP-XXXX was initially recovered in 1987 after a long-term study of neurological disorders in a rural area in ██████, United States revealed an exponential increase in neurodegenerative disease. Initially, the book's thickness was reported to be roughly 12cm due to the recent reading of its contents.

The front cover of SCP-XXXX is able to change in appearance to resemble works from any author whether they have been published or not. The book SCP-XXXX adapts depends on the individual looking at it, with others being unable to see the same image/title as the last person to read it. For instance, the cover tended to change to a work from Edgar Allan Poe when given to individuals with significant psychotic tendencies.

The first 10 pages of the book resemble those of the work visualized by the subject (hereinafter referred to as SCP-XXXX-1); however, after the aforementioned pages have been read, the book begins to transcribe memories from SCP-XXXX-1 into its pages, increasing the number of pages in the book. Additionally, the subjects develop an urge to continue reading until the book has finished, stops transcribing, or the subject has deceased. It is estimated that between two-thousand and seven-thousand people have read SCP-XXXX, resulting in the current size of the object.

The amount of damage done and the rate at which it is dealt has increased gradually, directly correlating to the number of pages in the book. Any attempts to remove pages from the book have failed, as the pages grow back with its exact contents unaltered and the removed sheets turn into an ash-like material within minutes. Additionally, photographs or video of any kind retain SCP-XXXX's memetic agents if the contents are displayed.

Subject: D-1738; 54 year-old male. Convicted of first-degree murder, sexual assault, and abduction of a minor.
Procedure: D-1738 is seated alone in a room with SCP-XXXX on top of a desk.

<BEGIN LOG, 11:33:04>

Dr. ███████: Good morning, D-1738. Please take a seat.

[D-1738 pulls the chair, sits down, and pushes the chair back in]

D-1738: So, what? i just came here to read you a book? Do I look like your mother?

D-1738: "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka

Dr. ███████: Please open the first page of the book and begin reading until you're told to stop.

D-1738: Man, why do I gotta do this? I mean, can't you read it yourself? I don't want some weird fuckin' bug jumping at my face from inside the book or sum'.

Dr. ███████: Just start reading out loud. If you don't want to, we'll just bring another Class-D.

D-1738: "One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from anxious dreams, he discovered that in bed he had been changed into a monstrous verminous bug. He lay on his armour-hard back and saw, as he lifted his head up […]"

[D-1738 continues narrating without issues]

[At this point, D-1738's ability to speak has been significantly affected. His speech is slurred and murmurs words repeatedly. He presses his fist against his skull, signaling a strong migraine]

D-1738: "My daddy was tough on me. I reckon he would tell me to walk to the market 'bout five miles yonder and spank me if I didn't buy them fancy cigars he'd smoke while he worked the fields." [D-1738 grunts]

Dr. ███████: D-1738?

D-1738: [unintelligible]

Dr. ███████: How's Gregor doing?

D-1738: Huh?

Dr. ███████: (off microphone) Please call the medical bay and tell them to prepare for an MRI.
D-1738: Hey, how the fuck did I get in here?

Dr. ███████: Alright, that's all we need. Thank you, D-1738. (Off microphone) Send him to the medbay.

[Two security guards open the door. They lift D-1738, who struggles to move his limbs, and drag him out of the room]

Closing Statement: Following D-1738's removal from the chamber, he suffered a brain aneurysm and died minutes after. A CT scan revealed that the left hemisphere of the cerebral cortex of D-1738 had "withered." This was a direct result of his continuous exposure to SCP-XXXX.

Due to the sensitive contents of SCP-XXXX and the increasing danger to those under the effects of it, its security clearance level has been raised from Level 3 to Level 4.

And don't let yourselves believe you can wash your hands, Overwatch. You were well aware of the danger that book poses every time someone reads it. Now you have even more blood on your hands. You MUST fix this.
