Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is contained within a four meter tall electric fence. There is to be at least one armed guard, disguised as park a ranger on duty at all times. When questioned as to the fence’s purpose or asked for personal details, guards are to follow cover protocol 501-c 4.

In the event of a perimeter breach any intruder is to be turned over to the local authorities. If the perimeter breach results in the expiration of the intruder in any form their body is to be disposed of into SCP-XXXX. All bodies, alive or deceased, within SCP-XXXX are not to be retrieved or disturbed.

SCP-XXXX is not to be entered at any time nor for any reason, nor is its water to be drunk or urinated into. Neglecting to follow these instructions will result in demotion and reassignment.

Water exiting SCP-XXXX is to be disregarded.

Description: SCP-XXXX is located on a 5 acre Foundation property in [REDACTED], Missouri, USA. SCP-XXXX refers to a fresh water, artesian, third-magnitude spring in the Ozark Hills. Water from SCP-XXXX contains no traceable impurities. SCP-XXXX is a body of water measuring eight meters at its largest in diameter and three meters at its deepest. The spring, located at the center, is the source of SCP-XXXX’s water and has a known depth of at least six-hundred thirty-seven meters. The bottom of the well is clearly visible and appears to only be about ten to fifteen meters at its deepest.

Following seventeen disappearances from 19XX-20XX, the FBI began an investigation, and subsequently transferred SCP-XXXX to The Foundation.

The water itself possesses unnaturally transparent qualities, and despite being located in a heavily canopied area, the bottom of the spring is clearly visible. The spring remains at 31ºC regardless of ambient temperature. Local populations refer to the spring as the “Glass Pond” due to its clarity. SCP-XXXX derives its anomalous properties from its water. Once this water has left the boundaries of SCP-XXXX, it acts no different than regular fresh water.

Currently there are 17 corpses of varying ages located within SCP-XXXX, which will now be referred to as SCP-XXXX-01. Observers and observational equipment are unable to view instances of SCP-XXXX-01 unless completely submerged in the water. It should also be noted that an observer’s eyes must be exposed directly to SCP-XXXX to see SCP-XXXX-01.

SCP-XXXX’s most dangerous property is only realized when a subject is completely submerged. Once submerged, any efforts to leave SCP-XXXX will be futile. When attempting to break through the surface of SCP-XXXX, all water above the subject will immediately crystallize, or freeze. The water crystallizes approximately one meter in diameter around where the subject intends to breach the surface. The stronger the subject pushes the larger the radius becomes, even extending up until seven meters. Testing has found these layers of ice to be impenetrable with conventional tools or weapons (See test log 02A and 03A). The ice shares the same transparent properties as the rest of the water. Following expiration, subjects will sink and all ice will dissipate.

When water is drunk directly from SCP-XXXX the water will retain its anomalous properties and will either crystallize within the mouth or throat of the subject.

No organisms that are submerged in SCP-XXXX can be retrieved (See test log 02).

Addendum:
Addendum 01: All instances of SCP-XXXX-01 have not undergone any forms of decomposition. Lab reports have also shown no bacteria nor algae inhabit SCP-XXXX.

Addendum 02: Reflective seismic readings have found an aberration in the Ozark aquifer, SCP-XXXX most likely source of water, surrounding SCP-XXXX. This abnormality spans about nine kilometers in each direction surrounding SCP-XXXX.

Addendum 03: Following incident report XXXX-01, retrieval of any objects or organisms that enter SCP-XXXX must have approval from the site director.

Addendum 04: Request to utilize SCP-XXXX as a containment unit still pending authorization by the 0-5 council.

Incident Report:
Incident 01: 2/5/██
15:55:03 Dr. [EXPUNGED] fell into SCP-XXXX, completely submerging herself. Dr. [EXPUNGED] expired 03:35 minutes after falling in. Her corpse sank immediately. Due to the anomalous nature of SCP-XXXX, all attempts to retrieve Dr [EXPUNGED], during and after her death, were met with failure.

Test Log:
Test 01: 3/7/██
Two submersible (referred to as S01 and S02) cameras were deposited into the spring, producing live footage. As soon as the cameras became completely submerged, seventeen instances of SCP-XXXX-01, including Dr. [EXPUNGED], were visible at the bed of the lake as well as a variety of native animals. While these bodies were found to resemble the missing persons reports from 19XX-20XX, no visible signs of decay had occurred.
00:00 All organic materials began to float. Their speeds were calculated and found to be the expected rates of floatation for each object. The bodies reached the surface of the spring, yet a thin layer of water encased them. Dr. Noonan remarked the bodies resembled photos of swimmers taken before surface tension had broken. From 00:00-01:00 the bodies were easily visible from the boundaries of SCP-XXXX surrounding the spring.
00:02 S02 remained outside of the well. S01 proceeded into the well in search of the aquifer. Rock samples were collected every fifty meters.
00:34 S01 had descended three-hundred fifty-six meters. The pilot expressed minor difficulty in ability to proceed further due to a higher rate of water flow. S01 recorded pressures consistent with that of a second-magnitude spring. Despite descending past the observed bottom of the well, the video feed displayed no changes in the distance between the bottom of the well and S01 at approximately eleven meters away.
00:54 S01 had descended five-hundred eighty meters. S01 recorded pressures consistent with that of a first-magnitude spring.
01:00 S01 had reached a depth of six-hundred thirty-seven meters. Connection with S01 was immediately lost. The final image of S01’s feed displays the bottom of the well at approximately eleven meters away.
Simultaneously S02 observed instances of SCP-XXXX-01 beginning to sink then rest again at the bottom of the pond. While the submersible showed evidence the bodies remained, observers stationed around the boundaries could no longer see the corpses nor S01. Yet, they reported to easily see the spring’s bottom with use of a flashlight.
01:02 S02 was removed from SCP-XXXX.

Test 02: 3/10/██ A live fox was deposited into the center of the spring. It swam for 26:02 minutes, before a scientist tossed in a cut of meat and the fox dove in to retrieve it. Following complete submersion, the fox was unable to bring it’s head above water. Despite swimming to the top of the spring and poking it’s head beyond the water’s surface, the fox was unable to break surface tension due to crystallization and drowned after 2:44 minutes. It’s corpse began to sink immediately upon death. All attempts to remove the test subject were met with failure due to the anomalous properties of SCP-XXXX.
Test 02A: 3/10/██
26:50 Researchers tested the strength and ductility of the ice following toughness procedure 03A. Researchers were unsuccessful in penetrating the surface of SCP-XXXX. The ice retained no observable damage and remained transparent.

Test 03: 3/12/██
One D-Class personnel (D-XXXX-01) was fitted with standard issue subaquatic equipment along with a live video feed head mount. D-XXXX-01 was unaware of SCP-XXXX’s anamolous properties. D-XXXX-01 was told not to surface until ordered.
00:01:32 D-XXXX-01 submerged himself in SCP-XXXX. Despite the video feed displaying multiple instances of SCP-XXXX-01, D-XXXX-01 reported no sightings.
00:04:52 D-XXXX-01 was instructed to swim to the other side of the pool. D-XXXX, while still reporting no instances of SCP-XXXX-01, avoided all collisions of SCP-XXXX-01 instances.
00:05:37 D-XXXX-01 was instructed to swim to the bottom of the well. D-XXXX decended approximately fifteen meters before turning back due to fatigue.
00:10:04 D-XXXX-01 was ordered to remove his dive mask and observe his surroundings. Immediately D-XXXX-01 reported seeing instances of SCP-XXXX-01, and subsequently attempted to escape SCP-XXXX injuring his cranium as well as his dive mask.
00:13:34 D-XXXX died of respiratory impairment.
Test 03A: 3/12/██
10:24 Researchers began testing the strength and ductility of the ice following toughness testing procedure 03B and 03C. Researchers were unsuccessful in penetrating the surface of SCP-XXXX.

Test 04: 3/24/██
A live mouse was starved of water for 36 hours. Upon its release, the mouse began drinking water from SCP-XXXX, which researchers had marked with a dye. Eighteen hours after the consumption of SCP-XXXX’s water, the mouse died of a respiratory impairment identical to drowning and even coughing water with an identical dye. The autopsy revealed the subject’s lungs to be full of the same marked water.
