Image of SCP-5827 during a brightening event
Item #: SCP-5827
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5827 is to be closely monitored by foundation personal at auxiliary Site-2E0854 located in Maui, Hawaii. Object monitoring is to be accomplished with the utilization of a large radio telescope array. Site-2E0854 is to be unmarked and described to the public as a government funded project researching the cosmic microwave background. Any anomalies in SCP-5827’s behavior is to be reported directly to the site supervisor.
Description: SCP-5827 is a collection of three astronomical bodies located approximately 13.4 billion light years away from Earth. Each instance of SCP-5827 (designated as SCP-5827-1 thru SCP-5827-3) is roughly one hundred times the size of UY-Scutti, the largest star known to humanity. Each SCP-5827 instance has a unique color. SCP-5827-1 is blue, SCP-5827-2 is red, and SCP-5827-3 is violet. It is currently unknown what these colors mean. The system is arranged in a triangular pattern, with each body roughly one hundred light years apart from the another. The bodies appear to orbit a seemingly empty portion of space with a full rotation being completed once every 50 years.
Contrary to all other aspects, the bodies are rather dim. Only emitting about as much light as our own sun. On occasion, the anomalies will randomly flare up, increasing their brightness by a factor of about 109 allowing them to be visible to more conventional telescopes. It is currently unknown why SCP-5827 instances do this. SCP-5827 instances appear to not contain any matter. There has been no detected presence of any form of matter within these bodies. Instead, SCP-5827 instances seem to be composed of pure energy and thus, do not have a strong gravitational pull. This explains why nearby celestial bodies seem unaffected by the presence of SCP-5827.
Addendum 1: On August 28, 2016. SCP-5827-2 began a brightening event. This caused both SCP-5827-1 and SCP-5827-3 to react similarly until all three bodies were at peak brightness. After approximately 3 days, all instances of SCP-5827 returned to their normal brightness. Incident was reported to the site supervisor.
Addendum 2: On March 14, 2017, another brightening event occurred. By directive of the O-5 council, Dr. John Quanto was sent to foundation Site-2E0854 to observe SCP-5827 with a conventional telescope. Below is a audio log of Quanto’s findings:
[BEGIN LOG]
[17:28]: I have located the instances of SCP-5827. Each instance is a different color. One blue, one red, and one violet. Each instance appears to be swelling with energy. Filters and sensors report no matter detected.
[17:43]: I’ve been continuing to search for evidence of matter, however, there’s really nothing there! It appears that these bodies must be composed of something else. The bodies appear to exhibit all the properties of matter though, although given their size, I don’t understand why surrounding star systems and galaxies are not being influenced by the supposed gravitational pull of the bodies.
[17:55]: I’ve made a conclusion. The bodies must be composed of some form of visible energy. Radiation is clearly present indicating some form of energy transfer however these bodies seem to not have any form of a gravitational pull. The problem this, this is an impossible conclusion from what we know of modern physics. SCP-5827 must be composed of something we still do not understand.
[18:10]: I’m beginning to see an even greater change in brightness towards the center of the triangular region the bodies form. It appears as if waves of each instance’s energies are clashing with each other, almost like they are battling. Could these bodies be sentient? Ehh… what am I kidding? I’m probably just seeing things.
