Special containment procedures:
Item 5988 must be kept in a concrete 8‘x10‘x10‘ room, light levels in the room may not exceed anything above the level of 200 lumens. The room is to be kept at a stable 65 degrees Farenheit. It must be held atop a grey pedestal under a glass box. This glass must have a minmum width of 6.5 mm.
Two armed security personnel must always be stationed outside of the entrance to SCP-5988‘s containment area. These personnel may not under any circumstances have a prior history of or currently suffer from any mental illnesses. Any personnel who wish to observe 5988’s properties and effects must recieve clearance from no less than 2 level 03 staff members. If a test is to be contucted, the subject making contact with SCP-5988 must be supplied with no less than 5000 sheets of white, lined 8“x11“ paper. All those who wish to and are currently monitoring 5988 may not have a prior history of or currently suffer from any mental illnesses. Should any personnel involved with the monitoring and containment of 5988 begin exhibiting signs and symptoms of any mental illnesses, they must immediately be removed from 5988‘s containment area and be forced to undergo a psychological evaluation. If it is determined that the said personnel have developed any mental illnesses or disorders, they are to immediately be administered Class A amnestics and be reassigned to a different position in the foundation.
Should any personnel involved with the containment and monitoring of 5988 begin exhibiting violent tendencies towards themselves or others, they must immediately be terminated.
Description:
SCP-5988 is an ornate pen approximately 10 inches in length and 0.5 inches in width, with a silver metallic outer casing. This casing is engraved with aramaic symbols which, when translated shows a different message every time even though the engravings never change.
SCP-5988 has the ability to manipulate and effect the minds of those around it, thought the severity and longevity of effects differs depending on the current mental state of the person effected. Under no circumstances other than testing should an individual (no matter how high their clearance level) pick up or touch SCP-5988.
If an individual does pick up or touch 5988, they will be overcome with a strong urge to write down everything that has ever happened in their life in excruciating detail. As they progress, their mental state will begin to deteriorate and warp exponentially, with the subject having to rewrite, revise, and even destroy their previous writing only to start all over again due to them no longer being able to remember if everything they had written was accurate or even real. Should the subject run out of paper before they can complete their writing, they will become extremely distressed and agitated. This will eventually lead to the subject becoming incoherent and clinically insane.
Attempts to intercept this descent into insanity by giving the subject more paper after they had initially run out have proven futile, as the subject will destroy the new paper claiming it :“Isn‘t right.“
Should the subject be able to finish their writing without losing their mind, they will begin to laugh uncontrollably for a duration of anywhere from 3 minutes, to 12 hours. Attempts to intercept this laughter by talking to the subject have emitted unresponsiveness, any physical attempts of force to stop this laughter have been met with extreme hostility from the subject. This hostility will manifest into trying to murder whomever has initiated this contact, if the subject succeeds in doing this they will resume laughing once again.
Once the subject‘s fit of laughter has ended, they will proceed to jam the pen deeply into their eye socket. They will continue pushing the pen further and further into their skull as well as violently moving it in multiple directions until they are able to successfully stop their brain from functioning, at which point they will drop to the ground, dead.
