Item #: SCP-X

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: Coastal regions frequented by SCP-X instances are to monitored weekly by local marine vessels equipped with sonar capable of bathymetric mapping. SCP-X-1, and any future detained instances, are to be held at Site-66 in a saltwater tank set to mimic ocean conditions found in the bathypelagic zone. Feedings are to occur monthly and consist of 1200kg of assorted bony fish. Due to SCP-X’s anomalous abilities, all tank maintenance, feedings, tests, and interviews are to be conducted solely by biologically female staff.

Description: SCP-X is the collective designation assigned to gigantic instances of Lophiiformes, or the deep sea anglerfish. Subjects vary in appearance and size, resembling such species as Cryptopsaras couesii, Bufoceratias wedli, and Antennarius striatus, with typical size estimated at 5m to 12m in length. In addition, all possess an exceptionally long illicium1 capable of extending at least 100m, and terminating into a realistic and anatomically accurate body of a human female, connected at the base of the skull.

These human lures act as a direct extension of SCP-X, showing them to possess corresponding intellect and the ability to speak. Instances are capable of camouflaging their primary bodies and the connecting illicium by emitting a subliminal bioluminescence from the eyes and mouth, producing a hallucinatory effect in observers, and allowing them to appear fully human. Sustained exposure to this bioluminescence produces a euphoric response in victims, greatly lessening inhibitions and making them easily suggestable. These effects are greatly amplified in biologically male individuals.

SCP-X will utilize these abilities when surfacing to attract potential mates. Similar to certain species of non-anomalous anglerfish, instances reproduce via sexual symbiosis and are therefore reliant on parabiotic reproduction and a polyandrous mating system. When a desired mate comes into contact with the primary body, SCP-X will release digestive enzymes, effectively fusing the victim to itself. Over the course of several months these enzymes will continue to break down tissue and non-essential organs until the victim is reduced to a tumorous gonad.

SCP-X instances are believed to operate globally. Surfacing events most often occur in low populated regions at nightfall, during which instances will remain submerged, while their lure will pace the shoreline until making human contact. Behaviors vary drastically, with some seeking out clothing to further disguise themselves and converse with passersby, while others will remain nude and commit to seduction tactics. Encounters may last a few minutes or occur over the course of multiple days, with instances reuniting with select individuals each night. Ultimately, should SCP-X find a desired mate, they will persuade the victim into the water to abduct them.

One injured instance of SCP-X, hereby designated SCP-X-1, is currently in Foundation custody. Containment was achieved after reports of an enormous beached creature near the boardwalks of Atlantic City, New Jersey, reached imbedded agents within the local police department. After securing a perimeter and treating known witnesses with Class-A amnestics, SCP-X-1 was towed back into the water, where it subsequently revived.

SCP-X-1 most closely resembles an anglerfish of the species Melanocetus eustalus, is currently 6m in length and weighs 2900kg. It possesses 8 tumorous human mates on its primary body in various stages of enzyme induced fusion, with the most recently attached still showing rudimentary autonomic functions, including pupillary response. DNA testing is underway to find possible links with missing persons reports filed along coastal residences.

The injuries sustained by SCP-X-1 are exclusive to its human anatomy, with complete decapitation achieved beneath the C4 vertebrae, and significant harm to the right optical orbit, necessitating removal of the eye. Its corresponding human body could not be recovered and was believed to be lost at sea. Despite this damage, SCP-X-1 is still capable of speech and emitting short intermittent bursts of bioluminescence.
