Special Containment Procedures:
SCP —— is to be kept in a sealed Petri dish of radius five ( 5 ) cm by two ( 2 ) cm inside a plexiglass cube of measurements thirty ( 30 ) cm of walls two ( 2 ) cm thick inside a secure storage locker similar to that of SCP 1230. The glass cube and storage locker are to be sterilised weekly via an automated system. Anyone below security clearance Level 4 attempting to access the following must be administered with Class C Amnestics and sedated immediately. All new strains of the disease are also to be placed inside of the plexiglass container. No fewer than two ( 2 ) guards are to be stationed outside of its containment at all times. Guards are to be told that they are guarding SCP 1230 to prevent accidental leaks of the virus. Communication between guards is strictly prohibited during shift hours. Thermal imaging cameras are to survey guards at all times for signs of symptoms of infection by SCP ——.
Guards who are found to show symptoms of the virus are to be sedated immediately and administered with Class C Amnestics, and repeat administration of amnestics if necessary. If the subject seems to not respond to the presence of amnestics, subject is to be terminated. Success rate of amnestics are approximately 62%. The cause of amnestic failure is unknown. Routine psychiatric checkups are to be conducted by psychiatrists disguised as cordial conversations during break times, asking questions which would test the guard’s memory. Note that no one involved in the process should possess any knowledge as to what they are supposed to be guarding, as it is extremely classified. Subjects who seem to be aware of what they are guarding are to be administered with Class C Amnestics immediately as per its containment. Access to the file is permitted only when Class C Amnestics are administered after contact with the restricted files. Person is then to be sedated and quarantined from the other Foundation members for a 3 day period to ensure no contact between the infected and the healthy, before being sent for psychiatric checkups, followed by subsequent discharge.
All material encompassing descriptions of this SCP are to be quarantined and denied access to any personnel of level 3 security clearance and lower. This file is only to be opened in the scenario that there is a need for this virus to be studied. If a migraine is felt shortly after reading this file, do not seek medical assistance. Instead, you are to isolate yourself from other people for the next three ( 3 ) days or turn yourself in to the Foundation, in which specially allocated members have been trained and ordered to sedate you.
Description:
SCP —— is a strain of a virus that spreads through knowledge of its existence. Once it is known, the infected will feel a migraine that is sustained over three ( 3 ) days, during which they will have a strong compulsion to inform others of the virus’ existence and after which the victim will lose all memory of both the virus and events that occurred during the time period during which he was infected. As such, due to its aforementioned containment, one can only be infected by word of mouth or written information. Audio broadcasts and videos or content uploaded to social media can also be a leading cause of the spread of the virus.
Due to its method of transmission, several large-scale operations authorised by the O5 had been made necessary to contain the virus.
Two theories exist on the nature of the virus; It has been hypothesised that all grown humans have this virus present inside of them in a dormant state, triggered by a specific pattern of synapse activity. Alternatively, it could be a virus much like rabies, containing a single strand RNA that is released into host cytoplasm and entering the central nervous system through the bloodstream and following the Peripheral Nerves to the brain, infecting its memory centres. Several experiments and tests have been conducted to prove one and disprove the other. However, research concludes that both theories are still highly possible.
People who have been infected with the virus tend to have very abrupt mood swings and behaviour. Some examples of such behaviour include bursting into tears without any previous warning, and sudden bursts of anger. If you come into contact with persons showing such behaviour unusual to them, it is advisable to isolate them immediately for three ( 3 ) days.
The virus currently has two ( 2 ) known strains with separate side effects. See addendum SCP ——-1 for more details.
This is what could potentially happen if SCP —— released to the public:
SCP —— infects patient zero. They start telling everyone they know about their headache. Everyone they know is infected. This spreads exponentially. After three days, everyone would have forgotten the infection period. Chances are some evidence of the virus would be accidentally rediscovered and re-spread. As such, in this scenario members of the public would only remember snatches of information in between infection periods.
Discovery:
SCP —— was discovered at a wedding in Los Angeles, California, 1967, when the couple reported to be suffering from 'splitting headaches'. It has been reported by [REDACTED], who has since likely been administered with Class A Amnestics. The couple, while intoxicated during their wedding, managed somehow to spread information concerning this phantom virus. Investigation is pending by individuals sufficiently briefed in the anomalous nature of the subject. The headache continued for three days following the incident, while telling their close relatives and friends about it. On the third day after the incident, when questioned about what happened for the past three days, it is reported that they had no recollection to what had happened. The marriage remains a mystery to members of the public. Camera footage has recorded it, while nobody has any recollection of it. All Camera footage files regarding this matter are now under the possession of the SCP Foundation and this matter remains shrouded to the public.
Specimen of the virus was collected from subject D-3851, a Caucasian male of age 43 who reported to have been suffering from the virus. Guards who were informed of his condition were administered with Class A Amnestics immediately after the incident.
Other strains of the virus have been collected from other subjects who have currently been terminated to prevent widespread disorder of the foundation or even the public due to its adverse effects.
Testing:
14 May 2015, 3:00pm.
Test Subject:
Brown Macaque, 2 years old.
Procedure:
Subject was informed through the use of English by an infected Foundation member that 'I recently got a virus. I've been suffering from splitting headaches.'
Results:
Macaque showed no visible symptoms of the disease. When tested by blood, any presence of the virus was negative.
Analysis:
Subject must be a human in order for the virus to take effect, thus supporting the first theory of the virus.
15 May 2015, 12:00pm.
Test Subject:
31 year old convict, sentenced for life without parole.
Procedure:
Subject was informed through the use of English by an infected Foundation member that 'I recently got a virus. I've been suffering from splitting headaches.'
Results:
After five (5) hours, the subject claims he began experiencing a painful throbbing in the back of his head. Exactly seventy-two (72) hours following exposure to the Foundation member, the subject has no recollection of how he ended up in the research facility. Subject was subsequently administered with Class A Amnestics before being relocated back in his old prison cell.
Analysis: This confirms the hypothesis that the virus only infects humans. Symptoms have been revealed.
Another strain of SCP —— found, located in Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA in July 12, 2013. The patient zero of the virus (SCP ——-B) was reported to suffer from similar symptoms except that the patient zero was reportedly suffering from pain in the head. When sent to the hospital, the patient's doctor diagnosed him with internal hemorrhaging in his brain with no known cause. SCP level 4 clearance guards came to see him, taking a sample of his blood through the use of a standard syringe, before administering Class A Amnestics to the patient. Patient expired one hundred and two ( 102 ) hours estimated time of infection. Incubation period is an estimated five ( 5 ) hours, with an estimated killing time of four ( 4 ) days. The doctors and nurses who were in charge of the aforementioned expired patient began showing symptoms about five ( 5 ) hours after he was diagnosed with the disease. All of those personnel were then terminated by Level 4 security clearance guards. The original carrier of this strain is unknown. Effects can be reversed by administering Class C amnestics. Further testing of the effects of amnestics on the symptoms of the virus shows that Class C amnestics are the only amnestics effective in preventing further brain damage.
An autopsy performed on the patient zero concluded that the virus had infected the nervous system. Severe brain damage was present in the motor cortex, cerebellum and the front lobes of the brain.
The following is the video log of biological testing with SCP ——-B on a Caucasian male, aged 33 (D-1384), who was a convict sentenced for life with no parole.
(Subject enters room)
Dr. [REDACTED]: D-1384, I presume. Take a seat, please.
Subject: Yes… Doctor.
Dr. [REDACTED]: You are about to be subjected to… what we are testing. I am not too sure what it is. The… it was given to me by the administrator himself. Report anything through the transmitter.
Subject: Right.
(Dr. [REDACTED] picks up a syringe from a surgical tray on the table. He exits the testing chamber, leaving the Subject alone.)
(Subject watches the video. The audio is barely audible, but Subject seems to be able to hear it clearly.)
Subject: Alright. The video's over.
Dr. [REDACTED]: Okay, I’m going to leave you alone now. Just speak into the transmitter if you experience anything.
Subject: Okay.
(A total of 302 minutes pass. Subject shows clear facial signs of distress and anxiety.)
Subject: Doctor? I don't think I can continue. I'm starting to… (wheeze) I'm not feeling well.
(104 minutes pass. Subject begins hyperventilating.)
Subject: Is anyone there? I need medical attention! Help! You can't do this to me! It's against the law! (Shouts) Is this some kind of punishment? I'm innocent! I didn't kill him! Listen! I… I… The witnesses lied! Damn it! (Heavy breathing) Fuck!
(Subject flips the table, before rushing towards the plexiglass, banging it repeatedly and shouting.)
(106 minutes pass.)
(Subject starts twitching uncontrollably. 5 minutes following this, the subject eventually begins to have a seizure, shaking violently in his seat. Subject falls out of the seat and lands on the floor, while he continues spasming and shaking. Subject continues experiencing said symptoms for another 30 minutes, before stopping.)
(26 hours pass. The subject lies unmoving on the floor, apparently unconscious or deceased.)
(19 hours pass. The subject seems to have reawakened in a state of half-consciousness.)
Subject: You… Set… Me… Up… Why?! (The subject hits the transmitter.) The mic… It was a fucking audio recorder all along… You sick bastards…
(subject attempts to get up and charge towards the door. Instead, he moves in a rather awkward fashion, tripping over his steps, clearly showing symptoms of brain damage.)
(The subject from hereon after slips into unconscious and vice versa. He remains silent for the rest of the audio log.)
(55 hours pass. It is assumed that the Subject is deceased. Door opens. Two guards in Biohazard Safety Level 4 suits walk in)
Guard 1: Wow, he looks real pale. What happened here?
Guard 2: Let’s just pick up the cadaver and leave.
Guard 1: (Grunts) He's heavy.
(Both guards exit)
(End of video log)
Note: The autopsy of the subject concluded that the virus had completely infected and destroyed the motor cortex, cerebellum and the front lobes of the brain. The cause of the damage is found to be a toxin secreted by the virus. The toxin is lethal and highly dangerous.
Further testing of the toxin released by the virus shows that the toxin diffuses through many common materials used to produce gloves that are used in laboratories. Extreme caution is required when handling the toxin.
Biological testing of SCP——B discontinued when [REDACTED] was exposed to SCP——B, resulting in the death of [DATA EXPUNGED]. Subject has been terminated, and all personnel recently in close proximity to SCP——B sent for psychiatric evaluation. Further testing will carry on for SCP——.
The following is the video log of biological testing with SCP —— on a Caucasian male, aged 41 (D-1963), a convict sentenced for life without parole.
Dr. [REDACTED]: Hello D-1963. This is a short test of a virus that we have obtained. We are currently unsure of its adverse effects, and we are here to find out. Now, video footage of a patient’s symptoms of a virus will be displayed to you.
Subject: Let’s get on with it.
(Dr. [REDACTED] sets a tablet on the table with the video footage. He stays the testing chamber.)
(Subject watches the video. The audio is barely audible, but Subject seems to be able to hear it clearly.)
Subject: That’s it?
Dr. [REDACTED]: Yes. Now, please wait patiently. Report anything that you experience or feel.
Subject: Okay.
(Approximately 4 hours and 58 minutes pass.)
Subject: Uh… Doctor? There's a… Throbbing at the back of my head.
Dr [REDACTED]: Same here. (Speaks into lapel mic) I'm experiencing what I presume as symptoms of SCP ——. I will remain in the testing chamber.
Subject: Wait, you’re not going to like, inject me with the virus or something?
Dr [REDACTED]: This is the procedure that my direct superiors have arranged. You will continue on with the procedure without any further questions asked.
(A few hours pass. Subject complains about the headache constantly being there, and so does Dr. [REDACTED].)
Subject: My headache’s getting worse. Could you notify the others to get me a cup of water?
Dr. [REDACTED]: I think I need one too. My headache is still there…
(Dr. [REDACTED] speaks into his lapel mic to request two glasses of water from SCP Foundation members. Level 4 security clearance guards enter the room with two cups of water, saying nothing, before leaving shortly.)
Subject: (Takes a sip) I don’t understand what you’re testing. You just showed me some video clip with really poor quality. It’s not even related to a virus - It’s a fucking wedding!
Dr. [REDACTED]: That is exactly what I am testing. It’s… sort of a mind manipulating entity that makes you suffer from headaches and… makes you forget.
Subject: Forget what?
Dr. [REDACTED]: I’m not saying anymore. It’ll be revealing too much about the experiment.
Subject: Fine. You brought me here in this scary ass place, performing an experiment that could well kill me without me realising that it is, and you’re not telling me anything useful.
Dr. [REDACTED]: I’m sorry, this is the experimental procedure. Please be patient and remain silent. Cordialities between the doctor and subject are not within standard testing protocol.
(2 days pass. Nothing much happens, and Dr. [REDACTED] and Subject are regularly fed and given water. They are also given a pillow each to rest in the room.)
Subject: What the… (Pause) Was I relocated to another cell?
Dr. [REDACTED]: We're- Damn it. I'm getting nothing from the lab. (Speaks into lapel mic) Open the goddamn doors!
Subject: (In a surprised tone) Who are you?
Dr. [REDACTED]: I'm the one asking questions around here. Who brought you in? Where's your security clearance keycard?
Subject: I don't know… I've been in jail for three years. I've never heard about or seen this block before. Looks like a… Research wing? Surely you must know something?
Dr. [REDACTED]: Look, this is a strictly guarded site, and you clearly don’t know anything about this place. Therefore, I must detain you right now.
Subject: Woah, hold on.
Dr. [REDACTED]: (Speaks into lapel mic) Contact main command. Comms override code 82629-A. Requesting Level 4 Clearance guards ASAP.
Guard: Speaking. What do you need?
Dr. [REDACTED]: I think there’s a breach in security. A prisoner somehow managed to get into Testing Chamber D-23. Request a lockdown immediately.
Guard: (Coughs) Doc, I think you’re mistaken. You requested for a subject for your testing, and we gave you one. There is no breach in security. We’re not relaying that order.
Dr. [REDACTED]: Did I? Oh… I can’t seem to remember anything that I’ve done within the last 3 days… Damn it.
(End of video log)
Since experimentation date, Dr [REDACTED] has made a full recovery and is now functioning normally. The subject has been administered with Class A Amnestics and relocated back to his original prison cell prior to the experiment.
An EK-Class event occured, dating [DATA EXPUNGED] wherein SCP —— was utilised in the memory wipe of all outside personnel. The following is a report of the event, written by Dr [REDACTED]. He was given a heavy dosage of Class C Amnesiacs shortly after, in accordance with his own specific orders.
20/4/ [DATA EXPUNGED]. EK and DK-Class Events occured, in which SCP —— utilised in drawing the public eye away from the Foundation. The following is a report of the event, written by Dr [REDACTED]. He was given a heavy dosage of Class C Amnesiacs shortly after, in accordance with his own specific orders.
A massive flaw in containment procedure in the heavy containment wing of the SCP Foundation, a result of errors in system programming, inadequate guard training, lack of manpower and other unnamed factors. There was a colossal breach in the Foundation's literal and figurative boundaries, releasing several life-threatening crises to the public eye that posed a veritable range of hazards, taxing the Foundation's resources to the extreme. Multitudinous task forces were assigned in the recapture of these Keter-Class SCPs, some of which were SCP 682, SCP 106, SCP 1000, SCP 2006, SCP 1440 and many others. Manpower was underwhelming. The Foundation was forced to reveal itself on Mass Media to appeal to members of the military and even untrained members of the general public to join the search for, and recapture of these highly dangerous entities. All was lost for the Foundation during what was probably the worst disaster in all Foundation records.
Twenty-five ( 25 ) hours after a State of Nationwide Emergency throughout the United States, Dr. [REDACTED] proposed using SCP —— to completely wipe all memory of the incident. While this was met with opposition from many council members (a "wastage" of already strained resources), however eventually two laboratories were allowed for the study of SCP —— concerning its spread and how to manipulate its symptoms to full effect. As one may expect, this is extremely classified and cannot be found in any other record or instance. SCP —— was swiftly implemented through introduction into underground water pipelines within seventy-two ( 72 ) hours of the declaration of a National State of Emergency. The virus soon infected the entire country under Foundation supervision. It was an unprecedented success, reducing the catastrophe to a minor problem.
