Site-15 was unusually still that day. The halls were empty, the rooms were dark. For the first time in decades all the hard drives had stopped spinning. The site was calm. But nobody was calm.

Deep inside Site-15, three men remained. The doors were heavily barricaded with furniture, to the point that only a small table remained unmoved. In truth they all know there was nothing behind that door, but in fact they very much wanted to be proven wrong. Loneliness was more comfortable than fear, and so the door remained closed.

On the table sat a laptop, and an old coaxial cable ran from the laptop up to a receptacle on the wall. The screen projected light into the otherwise dark room, illuminating the peeling white paint. Beyond the creaking and typing, the room was silent. There was nothing to be exchanged between the men, since they all knew what was happening, but nobody knew anything more.

As Site-15 was (formerly) the primary facility for containing electronic and digital anomalies, they were rather well-equipped for communicating with survivors, and fared better than other sites housing more dangerous anomalies. They relayed and received frequent communications from other sites, and from many civillians.

They heard it all.

Of course, they heard of death. That was to be expected. Most of the time, it was either suicide or amalgamation by SCP-001-A instances. It was inevitable, but it was immediate, and it had a beginning and an end. It was painless, and then it was over.

There are fates worse than death. Site-15 knew that.

Daybreak created madness. It ate at your soul and boiled you away, decomposing and dissipating and diminishing over days, until the last ounce of reason was gone, and a bullet took its place. It was deletion.

They received SOS transmissions that always went unheeded. Requests for supplies, for staff, for salvation, but these calls too had no answers. Worst of all, they heard the recordings. Last words that would one day be forgotten. Many times the feed was left on after suicide, broadcasting for all to see, until the transmitter slowly ran out of power and it would be gone forever. This world was grim and unforgiving.

But the three men knew they must keep repeating these signals, no matter the sacrifice, as bigger things were at stake.

Sixty-eight days after daybreak, the radio antenna of Site-15 stopped receiving signals.

The endless silence was broken: "I think the antenna snapped." said PLACEHOLDER1.

What seemed like an eternity went by. It was more silent than it had seemed just a minute ago.

"Someone will have to go outside and-"

"We know."

Another, shorter silence.

"Sorry."

Silence again.

"I'll do it." said PLACEHOLDER3.

"No, I'll do it." said PLACEHOLDER2.

"You can't. You're the only one who knows how to operate the program."

"Please."

"No, I'm doing it."

"Please!" His speech was distorted, twisted with the lump in his throat. Tears began to well up in his eyes.

"I need to do this. This isn't about me or you. This is more important than us." He turned away.

PLACEHOLDER3 approaches the door. In his right hand he holds a heavy toolbox with a welder inside. In his left he holds a syringe with a translucent green liquid inside. His left hand feels weightless and numb, yet the syringe has not yet been opened.

Behind him are PLACEHOLDER1 and PLACEHOLDER2. The lead-lined door slowly opens, PLACEHOLDER3 walks through, and as the door closes the room is once again hollow.

The lead-lined door seals behind PLACEHOLDER3, and he knows that he will never see it open again.

He walks the empty hallways, but he does not know he is walking. His mind is somewhere else.

As the door fully closes, the mechanical locks automatically engage. A loud clang is heard, followed by the sound of pressurized air leaving a piston. As the sound slowly fades away, the sounds of PLACEHOLDER3's footsteps can faintly be heard, until he turns a corner and they are truly alone.

As PLACEHOLDER3 reaches the end of the corridor, he sees that the door is already ajar. He takes a deep breath, and walks outside.

He pauses while his eyes adjust to the sunlight, and he realizes he has wanted it for so long. The air still smells like it did years ago. Warm, humid and organic. Nature has reclaimed the concrete of the building.

His eyes well up with glossy tears. This time, though, he is happy.

The antenna is still not fixed. PLACEHOLDER2 repeatedly refreshes the program, hoping it will soon capture signals again.

His stomach feels empty and every breath he takes seems to be harder and deeper than the last.

He flips to the security camera footage to see the state of the antenna.

I'm finally free.

He wanders away from the site, his height slowly shrinking as his center of mass collapses towards the ground while he stands.

PLACEHOLDER2 starts to turn away as PLACEHOLDER1 watches the screen behind him.

The thoughts flow slower and slower, and finally they pool in a puddle on the ground.
