Echo 18 Expedition

Echo 18 Expedition, continued.

Led by Commander Leronov, call sign Leo.

Tom pondered what he meant by he should leave. He was sent here on a mission. He flipped the page. He began to read a transcript of what happened.

Command: "Alright, Echo-18, permission to take of blindfolds granted. Proceed."

Leo took a deep whiff of the air. Smells fresh. Almost like pollution had been reverted completely. It was uneasy. They took him to a random location, had him blindfolded, and he was a commander! Imagining how they must of treated other people coming here made him shiver.

Command: "Leo, do you copy?"

Leo hesitated, "What if I just don't answer? What are they going to do?", He thought to himself.

Leo: "Command this is Leo, we have removed our blindfolds. Care to spare any info about where we are? Or are we going to be kept in the grey here?

Command: "This is command, you are currently in SCP-XXXX, another dimension. We sent you hear to gather intel on what's going on inside the dimension. We found this place nearly a week ago, when one of our agents overheard chatter about some kids finding a door that lead to nowhere in the forest."

So were the first to be here?, Leo thought. This is going to be just amazing. Nothing better then walking blindly into another goddamn dimension with some guns which probably won't even scratch whatever god forsaken thing is hiding in here.

"So Leo, what exactly are we doing here? What has command told you?" asked Martinez.

"Martinez, I know one thing. We're exploring whatever this place is, and were the first to do so. Weapons free, stay alert and keep quiet" Leo replied.

Echo-18 walked for an hour and a half north, observing the wildlife, and stopped for one break. At 17:32, 114 minutes into the expedition, Leo radioed command.

Leo: "Command, this is Leo speaking. This place isn't right. It's a replica. All the wildlife is here, the trees are the same, and the craziest part is that Site-██ is right where it always is."

Command: "Leo, this is command. Please proceed to explore Site-██ and report your findings"

"Leo, permission to speak?" Juno asked eagerly.

"Go ahead." Leo replied.

"Cap, all the lights are off inside of Site-██, isn't that a bit weird?" Juno replied swiftly.

Leo: "Command this is Leo… we have a bit of a situation. All the lights inside of Site-██ are off, and it's quiet. Too quiet for a Friday afternoon."

Command: "Leo this is command, we suggest you keep moving and try and find why there are no lights."

I KNOW THIS PART NEEDS EXPANSION, THIS IS A ROUGH DRAFT
Echo-18 moved forward, searching and clearing Site-██ in 2 hours.

Leo: "Command this is Leo, we just finished clearing Site-██, we are currently inside Dr.█████'s office. There are animals everywhere. This place looks so rundown, it hasn't been used in months. But the worse part is what happened to everyone, including Dr.█████. He's….dead. They all are. Everyone is just dead. Wolves are feasting on their bodies. We had to shoot a bear. Something killed them, and it wasn't for survival. Also the SCP's are just…gone. No traces. All of them just disappeared with no signs of breach."

Command: "Leo this is command, we need you to rest. You can come back in the morning."

Leo: "Why the hell can't we just come back right now? This place isn't right."

Command: "Currently we can't find the door, it moved. We are attempting to relocate it."

"Great…not only am I trapped, but this place is the death of all humans," Leo thought.

Echo-18 walked for 5 hours further north, before stopping at 22:00 to sleep

"Cap…..Cap….wake up. Something isn't right." Martinez shook Leo.

"Martinez what the hell? It's 0300 go back to sleep."

"Cap you need to look at this."

Leo sat up. He looked around, his eyes instantly darting to bright red lights in the distance. He could now here faint sirens blaring.

"What the fu-"

Leo was blinded by the bright flash of light followed by perilous winds.

Leo: COMMAND THIS IS LEO COME IN, ONE OF THE WARHEADS DETONATED AT SITE-██, GET US THE HELL OUT OF HERE.

Command didn't respond

Leo: COMMAND RESPOND.

shit Leo thought.

"Cap, if none of us was there to push the button, and you need an 05 Key card to detonate the nuke, then whatever detonated that nuke knows what its doing…" Martinez said.

"And whatever the hell it is…it doesn't want us here." Leo replied.

Echo-18 set off to find the door, travelling 18 miles in 2 hours.

Command:L- inaudible -ome in inaudible -at come i- inaudible

Leo ran atop a hill, trying to get a better signal

Leo: Command this is Leo, Warhead detonation at Site-██. Something is in here with us and it wants us out or dead.

Command: Leo this is command, we're sending in an extraction team.

Leo: Command we don't know where the door is, and it could be anywhere.

Command: The extraction team is firing a flare currently, stand by.

Leo: Tell the team to not fire the flare command, it could attract whatever th—

fwoomf

Leo looked towards the source of the noise. A bright red flare glistened into the night, most likely attracting everything within a 20 mile radius.

Command: Patching your comms over to Extraction Alpha.

EA: Echo-18 this is Extraction Alpha, what is your location.

Leo: Extract, what was your location when you fired that flare?

EA: Approx. 10 meters from the door, What is your location?

Leo: Extract, get the hell out of here, and make sure that door is closed.

EA: Echo, I'm afraid we are not leaving without you, dead or alive. What is your location?

Leo: You don't understand! You have to get out of here, there's something in here with us!

EA: Yeah I see the foxes and bears too, what is— HOLY SHIT

Leo listened as gunshots rang out from the radio and in the distance, followed by loud screaming coming from EA and whatever was attacking them.

Leo: Extract, are you there? Extract? Copy?

Leo looked at the two men with him. His face felt searing hot

"Look…boys…I'm going to be honest. We're going to die. Call your loved ones. Say your goodbyes. We're not getting out of here alive. Understand me?" Leo's eyes teared up as he spoke.

"Commander…you did the most you could." Martinez said.

"It's been an honor serving with you." Juno replied.

Command: Extract confirmed KIA, how do we proceed on extract?

Leo: You don't. Seal the entrance. Don't let whatever's in here get outside.

Tears streamed down Leo’s face.

Tom sat the letter down. He looked at the bodies. He was going to be one of them soon. Locked inside of here. He sat there for awhile. He was hoping death would be quick.

Tom: Command, reseal the door. Never send anyone back in here. Please.

He flicked off his radio and sat in the silence for awhile absorbing it. This is where he died. He wasn’t a supreme dictator. He wasn’t a beloved hero. He was a nobody. He was sent on a death mission. They knew it all along. They betrayed him. They didn’t tell him the odds of him dying. They didn’t tell him anything. He was an asset. He was a pawn. They just needed him to be a lab rat, and to confirm the death of Echo-18.

Tom looked at the bottom of the letter.

Sincerely,

Captain Ivan Leronov
