Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX remains inert until Foundation personnel are present and located within seven meters of it. Upon approach, SCP-XXXX will ring indefinitely until answered, or until all personnel exit the cell. Direct interaction with SCP-XXXX has not been observed to demonstrate any potentially harmful or adverse affects. Due to this, SCP-XXXX does not require 24-hour surveillance and can be contained in most environments.
Description: SCP-XXXX is an antique rotary phone of unknown origin. It functions normally, even though it is not connected to any external power source or phone line. It appears to have the same internal components and parts that were common in phones of the time, although all attempts to make outgoing calls using SCP-XXXX have ended in failure.
SCP-XXXX has only ever been observed to receive incoming calls, and will only ring once any Foundation personnel comes within seven meters.
Once answered, SCP-XXXX will connect the user to a phone call with the most recently deceased member of their family. However, all personnel that have experienced these calls report that the relative doesn't appear to have any knowledge of their demise, and will carry on a conversation as if they were just calling to say hello.
It has been determined that all calls SCP-XXXX receives are being transmitted from some point in the past, where the relative of whoever answered the phone is still alive.
The reason for these calls has yet to be determined, as does the object's ability to receive calls that relate specifically to whoever answered it.
When "triggered" by one member of personnel and answered by another, SCP-XXXX will connect to the relative of whoever answered.
All attempts to record conversations between personnel and SCP-XXXX have been unsuccessful, yielding audio that is only discernible when personnel are speaking. When SCP-XXXX responds, only static and white noise can be heard. When asked to recount the conversation, personnel become visibly distraught and emotional, reporting a strong urge to inform their family member of their death or to tell them to seek medical help, but being unable to for an as-yet-unknown reason.
Due to the object's function and the emotional response it triggers in the personnel who answer it, it is recommended that only Class-C personnel or above be permitted to interact with SCP-XXXX. Anyone outside of these classifications must require a full psychological evaluation prior.
