An instance of SCP-XXXX viewed under a microscope.
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-XXXX instances are to be sealed within the solitary confinement vaults in the maximum-security wing of Site-██. The vaults are equipped with airlocks and 15-minute timers for a disinfectant spray to be released and take effect. When entering the vaults no more than 3 personnel wearing infectious disease and virus suits are allowed to enter. Any personnel that stay within the vault for any longer than 30 minutes or that experience a breach in the suit's integrity will be monitored until they succumb to the increased difficulties of maintaining basic bodily functions.
Description:
SCP-XXXX Is a highly contagious viral infection that is responsible for quietly wiping out the entire native population of █████ island in the late 80s. The initial infection is harmless 56% of the time; however, it is impossible to build immunity towards it. Subjects who survived being infected once were 3 times as likely to experience symptoms during the second infection. SCP-XXXX causes homeostatic mechanisms of the body to cease. There have been cases of the cancellation of automatic breathing function, the inability to blink automatically, and in some instances, the heart and digestive system were found to have completely stopped functioning independently of the conscious mind. In order to maintain these bodily functions, subjects must place their focus on maintaining their breathing or blinking. In cases where mechanisms that the subject never had any conscious control over have ceased, medical assistance would be required to keep the subject alive. Subjects that managed to avoid symptoms after being infected with SCP-XXXX several times will inevitably experience the cessation of multiple or all automatic bodily functions. In one case, a D-Class personnel had avoided complications with SCP-XXXX after being infected 3 times. During the 4th infection, she suffered the complete cancellation of all respiratory, digestive, nervous, and cardiovascular systems. As of now, no subject has ever survived being inflicted with SCP-XXXX 4 times.
Experiment log:
A 46-year-old male test subject is infected with SCP-XXXX once. He lost the subconscious impulse to blink and was required to place all his concentration into maintaining some semblance of a consistent blinking cycle. His eyes received tremendous trauma when he repeatedly broke his concentration for long periods of time. The subject became blind after 3 days but managed to survive the ordeal.
A 29-year-old male test subject managed to avoid complications during his first infection. Upon being infected twice, the subject's lungs stopped functioning automatically. The subject sat upright in his bed concentrating on breathing for 4 days not receiving any sleep. Succumbing to his sleep deprivation, on the 4th night, the subject began to fall asleep for several seconds at a time. He woke up choking and struggling to breathe. He expressed feelings of extreme discomfort and panic, but finally died in his sleep 5 days after being infected.
A 35-year-old female test subject was infected with SCP-XXXX twice and received no symptoms. After she was infected for the third time, her heart stopped beating independently. The subject frantically attempted to administer CPR to herself, but she died when she failed to maintain her heartbeat.
Addendum: Incident XXXX
Out of spite with an argumentive D-class, Dr. Wick ordered the 3 D-class personnel within SCP-XXXX's chamber to be sealed inside and closely monitored. Dr. Wick justified his actions reasoning that there was an opportunity to conduct the postponed experiments1 now. Dr. Wick ordered all communication between the researchers and D-class severed. The D-class attempted to call out for assistance, but none arrived. Approximately 1 hour into the impromptu experiment, D-class 2727 suddenly collapsed onto the floor. 15 minutes later, both D-class 4889 and 0312 collapsed. Once the bodies were recovered, an autopsy was performed and a study was conducted on the integrity of the suits worn. SCP-XXXX appears to have a mild corrosive effect on the suits and skin of subjects that had never been observed beforehand. This implies that SCP-XXXX can introduce itself into the body by seeping through clothing and skin. This property had been elusive to researchers who had continually introduced the virus into their subjects by making them inhale SCP-XXXX instances. Dr. Wick deceived 5 more D-class who experienced fatal symptoms when locked in the containment chamber for 45-60 minutes. It is now thought that SCP-XXXX is fatal 100% of the time when large enough doses enter the body through the skin.
