Item #: 4921
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4921 is to be contained within a standard object containment locker. An opaque1 bag is to be placed around the object, and securely tied around the handle. Two armed security guards are to be placed around the locker. Testing is not permitted without direct permission from the Site Director and any individuals tested must pass a standard psychiatric examination. Any individuals attempted to use SCP-4921 for their own personal use will be immediately stripped of Foundation rank. Every 3 weeks, personnel who have passed a background check must enter the locker to ensure SCP-4921 is in good repair, performing routine maintenance.
EDIT: Due to the recent Ethics Committee decision (see below), tests will now be permitted to increase in frequency.
Description: SCP-4921 is a hand-mirror roughly 10 cm in radius, with a wooden frame. No physical anomalies are present, and it is susceptible to all standard expected forms of physical damage. Several scratches may be seen on the handle, and the majority of the black paint that used to be present on the object has now fallen away.
The primary anomalous effect of SCP-4921 may be observed after approximately fifteen seconds of self-examination through the mirror. Looking into the mirror, but not at one's self, has not been found to have any anomalous effect whatsoever. Upon self-examination, the individual will, from their own perspective, be transported into a pocket dimension for twelve days. No change occurs from the outside - the actual phenomenon appears to be time dilation occurring in a roughly dream-like space, lasting approximately five seconds. This extreme time dilation (Td coefficient 207,360) does not have the psychological impact that standard time dilation has2. It is not known if this is an anomaly of its own, or simply a side effect of the general anomaly of the object's capacity to reverse trauma.
In the mental space created after self-examination, subjects universally go through a twelve day cycle that follows the same general course of events. The twelve days go as follows:
Upon exiting the mental space, subjects note a noticeable improvement in their mental state - mental illnesses, such as depression, are alleviated if not completely cured, and past traumas appear to not concern the subject as much. Trauma caused by the torture inflicted by SCP-4921-A has not been observed to have any long-term effect on the subject.
Log of Discovery: SCP-4921 was purchased in a yard sale in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania after the death due to natural causes of one Francis Beckley4. The purchaser was local writer Eric Archer, who purchased it as a gift for his daughter. Eric experienced the effect while walking home, and later communicated to his therapist about it. Foundation auto-scanners detected possible anomalous activity from his communication about the experience, though subsequent interviews did not prove fruitful. The following poem by Archer is believed to be a semi-autobiographical account of his experience.
Upon locating the source of the object, an investigation was started into the life of Francis Beckley. He had been a member of the Serpent's Hand for 63 years, but quit four years prior to his death. Inside of his home, the following journal entry was located.
Research is continuing into the exact method in which Francis managed to create the object.
Addendum: The Ethics Committee has released an official statement regarding allowed usage of SCP-4921. The transcript is attached below.
