Item#: SCP-4291
Object class: Safe
Special containment procedures:SCP-4291 is to be contained within a standard safe-class containment locker. SCP-4291 is safe to be handled with bear hands and will not affect the user in any way unless the SCP is set alight. No further special containment procedures are necessary. Although SCP-4291 is deemed safe, the effects of the object may prove detrimental if the SCP is set alight and left unattended.
Description: SCP-4291 comprises of two parts: a small round clay fired pot containing a small blue tinged tea light in a tin case. The clay pot has holes through it, these holes are arranged in different designs: several flowers, birds, suns and 4 harps on opposite sides of each other. The clay pot is 6 inches deep with a diameter of 6 inches also for the mouth of the pot. Each of the smelled holes designs are roughly 1 inch in size with the harps being larger at 3.5 inches in size. The only other notable feature of the clay pot is a small impression of an Irish Celtic harp on the underside of the pot.
The pot contains an ordinary looking tealight, with a small blackened wick protruding from the centre of the wax. Another notable feature of SCP-4291 is that the wick can be lit and burn but the wax will not melt or change consistency in any way. When the tealight is lit, this is when the effects of the SCP can be observed. (see incident log #1)
Prior to discovery, SCP-4291 was owned by an elderly gentleman who lives in the village of Kilkieran, Southern Ireland. He had purchased it some years ago from an ‘old curios shop’, but is unsure when he purchased SCP-4291. Since then it had been used on occasion by the gentleman as it always made him feel ‘strangely happy’ when he was feeling down. Due to this oddly calming effect, the gentleman decided to take the candle to memorial service in the village chapel. When the SCP was lit at the memorial service, after a short delay the front row of people nearest to the SCP began to laugh or become elated, while the people who witnessed this were initially confused at what they perceived as disrespect being shown, but quickly became elucidated when the effects of SCP-4291 reached them. Those furthest to the back reported being initially shocked at witnessing this but said they felt extremely comforted a few moments after witnessing the events previously mentioned.
- *Addendum #1:* * The nature of the emotional changes seem to occur from the aroma emitted from SCP-4291 when lit. depending on what strong emotion one is feeling at the time, depends on what aroma. Several D-class subjects with varying mental states were used to test this hypothesis and subsequently what emotion is then felt. Initial testing of the SCP yielded these results:
| Subjects emotion | Emotion caused |
|---|---|
| Anger | Subject displays intense joy and willingness to forgive |
| Confusion | A sudden clarity comes over the subject. |
| Existential angst | Subject rapidly reaches a euphoric state in every sense of the word. Will begin speaking at a rapid place and experience profound pleasure about where they are in life. This is followed by extreme exhaustion. |
| Happiness | Subject becomes sad or deeply melancholic for a period of time. |
| Greif | Feelings of elation and mania are displayed, this is especially so when subject has recently suffered a bereavement |
| Depression | Although a more complex emotion, subject displays a period of mania followed by subsequent depression. The depression is never as severe as pervious. |
| Stress | Subject undergoes levels of serenity from calmness, acceptance peace followed by an almost a drug like state of intoxication. |
