Item #: SCP-4625
Object Class: Thaumiel
Special Containment Procedures: When not in use, SCP-4625 must be kept in a pouch or bag constructed with exactly seven layers of leather. The thickness of the pouch must be roughly .88 inches (22 mm) in in order to mirror the conditions in which SCP-4625 was found. All instances SCP-4625 must never be grouped together in groups larger than four to prevent increased intensity of SCP-4625's properties. All instances must be directly supervised and handled only by a Head Field Operative with at least Level 3 Clearance and has spent at least a month with training on handling SCP-4625 with researchers Dr. ████████ Dr. █████, and Researcher ███████. Each instance is specifically assigned to particular Head Field Agent or Task Force Operator;loss of an SPC-4625 is considered a Class A offense and any field agent with an SCP-4625 who fails to confirm and renew their assignment of that instance in a span of 3 months, must be terminated by any means necessary. Under 05 order, the largest collection of SPC-4625 instances are to be kept at Site-██, which was purchased from the GOC for that purpose before Incident ██ with SCP-4625 hindered any further relations with them. SCP-4625 must never be mentioned, referred to, or shown to anyone who under Clearance Level 3 to prevent instances from falling into the hands of non-personnel. Only the basic properties of SCP-4625 are allowed to be used without approval for beforehand by a Site Director. Any D-Class personnel who witness SCP-4625 must be given Grade A amnestics to prevent knowledge of it from spreading to those of lower clearance. All instances of SCP-4625 must be contained within a prescribed container when entering Foundation sites and never brought to sites without that Site Director's knowledge. When on site, SCP-4625 is to be kept in a Janitorial closet or storage room separate from the rest of the facilities in a safe that only the Site Director and field agent has a code for. Unauthorized use of SCP-4625 by Site Directors must be reported to the Ethics Committee who will then report it to the 05 council. All unauthorized use of SCP-4265 is punishable by demotion to D-Class personnel, Class Omega Amnestics, and/or immediate termination.
Description: SCP-4625 is collection of coins [titled SCP-4625-1 through SCP-4625-332] found on a sunken vessel in the North Sea. The coins themselves will appear as normal Yorvik coins of the 10th century, but under ultraviolet light bare the symbol of the World Tree on one side and 9 circles in a uniform arrangement on the other. The appearance change seems to have been a re-purposing of the older version of the coins; who and this was done (as SCP-4625 is virtually indestructible by normal means) is still subject for debate. They are composed of electrum, but also bear hints of the radioactive isotope of Gold (Au-195) and platinum. All compounds are completely stable in the coins and the coins themselves are almost impossible to destroy by normal means. Other SCPs with ██████████ properties have been capable of destroying at least one instance of SCP-4625. On close examination, there are tiny, interweaving lines on the coins themselves. This "inter-lacing" is observed when examined under the microscope. It is almost impossible to see any breaking in the pattern even down to the atomic level.
SCP-4625's properties make it a valuable asset to the foundation activities. When in the presence of anomalous entities, the coins will shake violently. While shaking, they produce infrasonic waves and several a large amount of outward force. Anyone holding SCP-4625 while it is oscillating will feel a strong sense of urgency, heightened proprioceptive responses, and hear a slight ringing in their ears. The oscillations will differ in types of "sensation" they give off as well as frequency of the force they exude depending on the direction of the anomalous entity, its distance, and its intent. Further research is being conducted to ascertain how SCP-4625 is able to respond to the intent of anomalous entities. When in a larger group, the oscillations can be powerful enough to trigger minor seismic activity capable of destroying buildings. A single coin is easiest handled when grasped in a fist and can be used to track and alert an agent of intended ambush or hidden action of a Keter-class entity. It is unknown if the detection SCP-4625 provides is precognitive in any way or if the detection is just instant. Field use of SCP-4625 has been incorporated into the program for many years and has dramatically increased life expectancy of important Field Agents and Task Force Leaders. Agents report the ability to react to entities a lot of faster and have called it the 'sixth sense' SCP-4625 instances grant them. Whether or not, these were intended functions of SCP-4625 has not been deduced as records of it in history have been few. When not in use after a period of roughly 30 seconds away from a non-anomalous entity; the instance will attempt to burrow into the skin of whatever is holding it through use of precise oscillations. This secondary property is capable of killing individuals when depending on the coins' placement on the body. This can be prevented through storing SCP-4625 in a leather carrier as prescribed by its containment procedure. The Ethics Committee has strictly forbidden any further experimentation of SCP-4625's secondary property. The coins themselves vary in terms of duration of oscillations, accuracy of direction, information conveyed about intent of anomalous intensity, and time of warning before action of anomalous entities. Some SCP-4625 seems to be more effective with certain field agents they have been assigned to for long periods of time and some are better at detecting certain types of entities (such ones with mimetic effects). It has been noted that the coins will be more effective with Field Agents who regularly polish and upkeep their assigned SCP-4625 instance. It is unknown if these differences are from some result of the original function of the coins or from any underlying sentience. The coins do not react to all anomalous beings, but rather ones that are not inherent to our reality. The limits of what constitutes whether or not something is a rightful part of our reality is still being tested.
SCP-4625 came under Foundation attention when reported seismic activity in the Northern Ocean lead the Foundation to believe it was another instance of SCP-169. The coins themselves were found in unnamed merchant vessel from the Dutch Republic that likely sunk in the year 16██. The coins were found nestled in the chest cavity of what remained of the ship's Captain; research into to Captain ███████'s history has shown the vessel was likely smuggling opium and treasures stolen from various trading partners of the Dutch Republic. It is believed the crew was taking the coins to ██████, England to be appraised and sold to the rich as cursed artifacts; if the research of the Captain's past transactions is anything to go on. Other than a few mentions in a few journals recovered from dead GOC agents and a few descriptions of coins seen by merchants along the silk road in ███ BC, there are no references to the nature of history of SCP-4625. A single researcher was able to find information on SCP-4625 through use of SCP-028. Their findings were recorded (see Document 4625-A) and the researcher was forcibly administered Class A amnestics as it lead them to cause the incident that ruined GOP cooperation regarding Site ██. Only those of with Level 4 clearance of higher are allowed to read those findings.
