Adult instance of SCP-4652-1

Item #: SCP-4652

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4652-1 instances are to be contained in cylindrical mesh frames, within a 10m X 10m soundproofed room at Site-104. 3.25" X 3.25" X 6.35" vases holding water and a single oak branch are to be in the center of every containment unit. Weekly checks for any degradation or other forms of change within containment cells are mandatory. Branches are to be replaced every 2-3 days, depending on its state of health.

Population of SCP-4652-1 instances are to be checked every day by two pairs of personnel, switching between the role of staying at the entrance to the cell and the role of analysis further into the room. Performing evaluations without an assigned partner is forbidden and will lead to suspension and possible training to prevent future cases. Any personnel that fail to return to their partners will be removed via another pair that has finished daily routine. If total failure in process of retrieval is achieved (When there is a lack of individuals to properly complete the task, usually occurring when all those attempting prior fell to the anomalous effects provided by SCP-4652), a team of guards in soundproof, full body suits are to enter the cell and retrieve all fallen personnel then check vitals.

Due to the speed at which psychological effects occur, experimentation with SCP-4652 may only be performed with prior approval from at least two Level 3 senior research staff.

Description: SCP-4652 is a brood of cicada that anatomically resembles the species Neotibicen winnemanna (Eastern Scissor Grinder). The individual cicadas, or SCP-4652-1, have no genetic or physical trait that has been deemed anomalous or in relation to the anomalous effects associated with SCP-4652. Recorded sounds produced by the mating calls (referred to as singing) match the natural call of Eastern Scissor Grinder. However, any subject within a ten meter radius of an instance of SCP-4652-1 will experience mild auditory pareidolia. Sounds commonly heard are bird chirps, the movement of animals (such as squirrels and deer), and the sound of a slight breeze. Auditory interpretations are unique to each individual, though it is more likely for two affected individuals to share a similar experience when listening to the same instance of SCP-4652-1. Anomalous effects do not stack when multiple cicadas are introduced, and rather seem to add many more different sound effects, with an often theme of loved ones and children playing.

SCP-4652 has not experienced its next emergence, and no eggs have been seen to develop into nymphs. Due to their lack of growth, eggs usually die off. It is unknown how the cicadas developed into the brood that is SCP-4652 in only a single cycle, but future observations will be the prime source of information.
SCP-4652 came to the attention of the foundation after the sudden disappearance of hikers and others engaging in regular outdoor activity not far from Site-104. Agents successfully returned all of the missing persons and evacuated the forest under the guise of exterminators killing off large populations of invasive wasps. All exposed to the anomalous effects of SCP-4652 were evaluated and confirmed to be unharmed and without further care from the foundation. Ongoing efforts to identify new cases of SCP-4652 are underway, though without success. Due to the nature of cicada broods, and the long cycles assosciated with their species (Including how close the brood came to anomalous wildlife within the site), SCP-4652 is classified as a Euclid-class object. Changing this is being considered.
