Item #: SCP-1708
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-1708 is located at Containment Site-██ in the █████ Mountains, ████████. It is to be kept in a standard padded cell with an observation window free of reflective surfaces. All rooms housing SCP-1708 must not contain any reflective surfaces/objects whatsoever. Personnel assigned to SCP-1708 are also advised to not have religious imagery on their person when in the subject’s line of sight. Personnel found to be negligent of one or both of these advisories will receive disciplinary action, reassignment, or termination depending on the severity of the infraction and the repercussions of such. Research inquiries should be directed toward Dr. Caleb Bryce; engagement with the subject is otherwise permitted with the approval of at least two (2) Level 3 personnel.
Description: SCP-1708 is an entity of unknown origin, measuring 2.7 meters in height and 30 kg in weight. Its axillary anatomy is comparable to that of a human, barring adaptations to accommodate the number of limbs protruding from its body. In total it has fourteen (14) limbs. Two are located at its most inferior, each separating at the joint into a pair of pointed extremities used for locomotion. Two articulate with the pectoral girdle, anatomically analogous to the upper limbs of a human. Four protrude from its posterior, medial to the subject’s scapulae, ending in a single pointed extremity on each. All four of these limbs exhibit severe injury from burns displaying no observable signs of healing. The remaining six limbs are located on the upper chest, vertically arranged across the subject’s midline in pairs. These limbs are hollow and covered in numerous cavities. Medical analyses indicate that these are linked to the subject’s respiratory system. Foundation radiologists report that the subject’s thorax contains a series of many thousands of string-like fibers throughout.
SCP-1708’s flesh is pale and metallic, containing various compounds of alkaline and alkaline earth metals. SCP-1708 exhibits muscular strength and speed that is significantly inferior to that of an average human. This weakness is likely the cause of the distinct twitching movements observed whilst performing gross motions. The subject’s cranium is round and triangular, with four circular cavities on its anterior side enclosed by a black glass-like membrane. It is otherwise devoid of features.
SCP-1708 has shown understanding of and response toward human speech with no dependency on language spoken. However, it is not capable of communication output using any known language and does not, under most circumstances, respond to stimuli of any other kind, provided that said stimulus does not inflict substantial physical harm or trigger a distress state.
SCP-1708 can most frequently be observed in a kneeled posture inside its cell. It sparingly moves unless prompted by Foundation personnel, although does so cooperatively. Religious imagery, figures, and textiles seem to illicit a stress response. In this state, SCP-1708 behaves erratically and becomes less cooperative and more prone to self-harm. Additionally, sedatives have not had any impact whatsoever on this behavior. Physical restraint remains effective, but it is generally advised that personnel refrain from provoking the subject such that it does not inflict any further harm upon itself. Due to its lacking physical ability, danger to staff as a result of this stress response is not a significant concern.
The subject, while undisturbed in containment, often produces noises akin to a musical number. It uses its six frontal limbs to do so, driving air in and out of said limbs in such a way that the fibrous strings in its thorax vibrate. This creates a combination of reverberating humming sounds and “plucking” sounds. See Audio File 1708-1.
SCP-1708 shows an apparent affinity for music. Research goals include confirming whether this is a tool of communication.
The presence of reflective surfaces in the subject’s immediate vicinity has consistently resulted in a distress state that is both hazardous to personnel and to the structural integrity of the immediate area. Presumably when exposed to its own reflection, the subject begins emitting sounds of enormous intensity. In one extreme case, this exceeded 210 db in strength, resulting in ██ personnel deaths and the complete demolition of SCP-1708’s initial containment post. See Addendum 1708-C. Considering these events, exposure of the subject to reflective surfaces or objects is strictly prohibited under all circumstances.
As of ██/██/████, SCP-1708 has made ██ attempts at its own life. Foundation personnel are advised to keep sharp objects out of rooms in which direct interaction with the subject is taking place.
Addendum 1708-A: Notes on Recovery:
The Foundation took an interest in SCP-1708 after reports of unidentified flying object activity in ███████, Brazil. Staff reports from the region described a “large, shiny, winged man” falling from the sky at approximately ██ km/s before crashing into an uninhabited building. A reflective substance was found scattered throughout the site, later identified as █████████ but the Foundation did not find anything else of interest and abandoned the venture.
On ██/██/████, Dr. Caleb Bryce, whom had taken on what was left of the project, received evidence from a personal task force that probable Horizon Initiative personnel had an anomalous entity in their possession somewhere around █████, Bolivia. A squad of six (6) Foundation agents were selected by Bryce and sent to investigate, and on ██/██/████ it was discovered that numerous members of the aforementioned GoI were in transit with the anomalous entity in containment. Reconnaissance carried out by Foundation forces lasted █ weeks before the convoy was located and intercepted on ██/██/████, resulting in armed combat lasting approximately ██ hours. Foundation forces ultimately recovered the cargo, and the subject was contained shortly thereafter in a temporary containment post awaiting extraction.
Addendum 1708-C: Event 1708-A
Testing Procedures: The subject was placed in a 3 m x 5 m cell composed of reinforced steel and lined with mirrors, for increasing amounts of time, in order to observe the subject's response.
Event 1708-A-1:
Date: ██/██/████
Timeframe: Subject was contained in cell for thirty (30) seconds.
Results: Subject began emitting high pitched sounds at approximately 60 db. Subject was removed without resistance. Subject showed signs of distress.
Test 1708-A-2:
Date: ██/██/████
Timeframe: Subject was contained in cell for five (5) minutes.
Results: Subject began emitting high pitched sounds at approximately 90 db. Subject was removed without resistance. Subject was deemed unconscious shortly after removal.
Test 1708-A-3:
Date: ██/██/████
Timeframe: Subject was contained in cell for fifteen (15) minutes.
Results: Subject began emitting high pitched sounds at approximately 120 db after ten minutes in containment. A quiet humming noise was observed emitting from the entity's chest for the remaining five minutes. Subject was removed with little resistance. Subject was deemed unconscious shortly after removal.
Test 1708-A-4:
Date: ██/██/████
Timeframe: Subject was contained in cell for one (1) hour.
Results: Subject began emitting high pitched sounds at approximately 120 db after ten minutes in containment. A quiet humming noise was observed emitting from the entity's chest for another ten minutes, before returning to a high pitched sound emitted at approximately ███ db. This resulted in the destruction of the chamber. Subject was found unconscious within the remains of the mirrored chamber shortly thereafter.
Test 1708-A-5:
Date: ██/██/████
Timeframe: Subject was contained in cell for six (6) hours.
Additional information: Chamber was replaced by a 3 m by 5 m cell composed of Class-1 reinforced ██████████ alloy located ████ meters within the Rocky Mountains at Research Site-██.
Results: Subject began emitting high pitched sounds at approximately 120 db after ten minutes in containment. A quiet humming noise was observed emitting from the entity's chest for another ten minutes, before returning to a high pitched sound emitted at approximately ███ db. A quiet humming noise was, again, observed emitting from the entity's chest for another ten minutes. Electrical surges occurred, and the chamber began showing signs of structural failure. The alloys began to vibrate and emit sounds at approximately ███ db before collapsing in on the subject, conforming to the shape of its body. After approximately thirty seconds the alloys fell to the ground, and the subject collapsed. The subject was in a comatose state for nearly three weeks after this event.
