Item #: SCP-3546

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-3546 does not have any specific containment procedures due to the fact that it can only be dangerous when interacted with. It is not considered able to escape or pose any immediate threat to the facility in which it is stored.
The object should be contained in a 25 square metre (5 m x 5 m) standard containment chamber. It can be stored anywhere in its cell. Its cell must be locked with access for only level 3 security clearance or higher due to the potential harm that the entity could cause if used.
Outside of authorised experimentation or testing, there is to be no interaction with SCP-3546.

Description: SCP-3546 is a standard Universal Serial Bus external storage memory stick flash drive. It connects via USB-A to a standard USB-A port. It is completely black, except for the silver connector, resembling the 'USB 1.x - 1.0', the first ever USB design from January 1996. The device contains approximately 50 MB (megabytes) of storage.

In their report, the below mentioned investigator; in the recovery log, brought SCP-3546 to the attention of the foundation based on a rumour on what the device was capable of.
When tested, the reported rumours were indeed confirmed to be true.
Any pictures loaded onto SCP-3546 underwent distortions, now described as 'alterations' of the image itself. These alterations happened over a matter of days to weeks, and usually distort the image by 'smudging' the pixels in localised areas, so that they look mutated when viewed.

In his report, the investigator in question cited the later reports of the factory workers (described below) as 'disturbing'. These reports from the investigator's contacts were also found to be true.

When the described 'alterations' take place on the image files, exact replicas of such mutations take place on the subject of the image in real life, in real time. See Addendum 3546-1
The distortions can take place on digital (pixels), non-living matter, and living matter. In such cases mutations can form and cause injury or death.

Recovery Log: SCP-3546 was discovered at █████ Ivanovo Technology Factory ██-B,
Administrative Centre of Ivanovo Oblast, Russia, located 254 kilometres east of Moscow. Task Force ████ were deployed following a report by field investigator, Fi. [REDACTED] on 23/11/199█.
Upon retrieval of SCP-3546 based on the reports of the investigator, it was connected to secure Data Computer 4_c in Sector-█ of Facility ███.
Using Image viewing software, the device was found to have contained 4 image files, all of which were photos of illegible writing carved in stone in various symbols from different human cultures and languages in an arbitrary order that has not yet been decoded but likely contains some message or meaning.
The files were all '.png' files and named: '1.png', '2.png', '3.png', '4.png' respectively.

These files are currently under investigation by various researches at the mentioned facility. Digital '.txt' copies of all files have been made. The following is an extract from file 3:

I recommend SCP-3546's properties should be investigated as soon as possible based on what the workers at that factory told me about the flash drive.

-Fi. [REDACTED]

Log Entry 4-11 26/11/199█

Experiment with D-Class subject: D-234

Experiment to determine attributes of the recently discovered SCP-3546 yielded
interesting and frightening results.

SCP-3546 was given an assumed: 'object class: safe' designation upon immediate discovery,
further tests are needed to decide whether or not this classification is appropriate
or not.
Although not posing any immediate threat, SCP-3546 is potentially very dangerous due to
the specific nature of its properties that were discovered in the experiment 4-11E, and
detailed in this report 4-11R.

Based on what Fi. [REDACTED] had informed me, and the disposable nature of the
Class-D personal, I deemed the potential results and findings of this experiment 4-11E
to outweigh the ethics concerned for the Class-D test subject --and that it was moral and
fair to carry out the experiment.--

EXCERPT OF EXPERIMENT REPORT BY DR. ███████

...

The photo of subject D-234's face was taken and loaded onto the secure
Data Computer 4_c in Sector-█ and loaded onto SCP-3546. D-234 was then allowed
to return to his cell C-███
The file was opened every 4 hours, on the hour for 1 (one) week after the photo was
loaded onto SCP-3546. A short time later, minor distortions were beginning to form on
the image. Starting at the 16th checkup. (hr 64)

...

D-234 was beginning to complain of serious trauma to his left temple at hour 68. He
was brought to the attention of Dr. ███████ and Fi. [REDACTED] but pronounced dead by hour
74. Cause of death: a skull fracture and brain haemorrhage.
D-234 screamed in agony as his head became deformed corresponding to the blending
of pixels seen on the image file from SCP-3546.

The left temple of the subject in the photo began to 'indent' on the image, as did the
left temple of the subject in real life, at the same time. It was truly obscene, this
device had killed this man based on its own mysterious properties, and a photograph taken
days ago. Even after the death of the man, his face became more and more damaged until
eventually the image stopped changing, at hour 120. Mutation ceased. I wish I could say
that I've never seen anything like it but I have seen much worse. SCP-3546 has some very
mysterious and dangerous properties, but as long as it is locked away, it should not pose
any immanent threat.

-Dr. ███████
