Item #: XXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXX may be safely stored in a non-hazardous anomalous item storage unit within Site-43. Instances of SCP-XXX-1 are to be stored in standard non-hazardous humanoid containment chambers and tended to according to standard humanoid care guidelines. Instances of SCP-XXX-2 are to be stored individually within cognitohazard-rated information isolation chambers, and are to be provided with cell accomodation and meals according to standard anomalous humanoid guidelines. Food and other amenities should be delivered via appropriate remote means to avoid direct contact (such as a food chute or food slot with in-built airlock). Testing or direct observation of any instance of SCP-XXX-2 requires prior approval from the O5 Council. Any personnel who have interacted with or directly observed instances of SCP-XXX-2 are required to be administered a dose of amnestics suitable to remove any memory of the interaction. All interview logs should be transcribed before amnestics are administered, and subsequently should be reviewed only by members of the O5 Council.

Creation of new instances of SCP-XXX-1 or SCP-XXX-2 is currently disallowed without express authorization by an O5 Council majority.

Description: SCP-XXX is a small brass medallion, believed to be of Celtic origin and produced by the ████████ civilization somewhere around ███ A.D. The medallion depicts what appears to be a smiling man surrounded by several indistinct figures. Around the edge of the medallion is a phrase written in Scottish Gaelic, "Sgaoil d ’inntinn" (“Free your mind”). Individuals observing the object feel no special compulsions to interact with it, although many describe the scene depicted on the artifact to be more unnerving or unsettling than expected. Subjects in direct possession of the artifact have unilaterally shown the ability to read and properly pronounce the inscription on the object regardless of prior knowledge of the Scottish Gaelic language, although once again do not appear to be under any preternatural compulsion to do so.

The back side of the object has been defaced and the Scottish Gaelic phrase "Daingneach. Cùm. Dìon." (“Secure. Contain. Protect.”) has been etched into it by hand. Analysis of this face of the artifact show signs of multiple successive applications of anomalous effects to the object. These anomalous effects appear to have permanently altered the function of the object. Analysis reveals this defacement to be no more than 50 years old.

When SCP-XXX is held by a human subject and the inscription along its edges is read aloud by the subject, its anomalous properties manifest. In approximately 90% of observed cases, the subject (hereby designated as an instance of SCP-XXX-1) begins developing auditory hallucinations which become progressively more frequent over the course of several weeks; these hallucinations will eventually become nearly constant. These auditory hallucinations appear to correspond to conversations happening in real time in other parts of the world. Frequently (greater than 70% incidence), these conversations involve at least one participant whom the subject knows personally. Conversation topics do not appear to follow any pattern, ranging from gossip or pleasantries to serious discussions of private matters. As occurance of hallucinations becomes more frequent, quality of life of the subject worsens. The subject will typically become unable to hold conversations and eventually will do little else but repeat the conversations heard in their hallucinations aloud. Whether this effect is anomalous in nature or simply a result of psychological breakdown is uncertain. There is currently no known mechanism to reverse the effects of SCP-XXX on a subject.

In the cases in which the subject does not become an instance of SCP-XXX-1, they will instead become an instance of SCP-XXX-2.

SCP-XXX was recovered on September 24, 1989 near ██████, Ireland during a raid on a compound belonging to GoI-████. It was recovered along with six (6) instances of SCP-XXX-2 which were being held as prisoners.
