Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX instances are self-contained, confined to the islands of Wake, Midway, Iwo Jima, Saipan, the Philippines, and Okinawa. Personnel are to be stationed on these islands and are to provide weekly reports on the behavior and location of any of the SCP-XXXX instances. If a change in behavior is observed, MTF Gamma-7 “Fly-Swatters” is to contain all instances on the islands and to bring them aboard the FNS-Atlas for transport to the Hawaiian site.

Description: SCP-XXXX instances are fireflies of the genus Lampyris that are native to certain islands in the Pacific Ocean. SCP-XXXX is incredibly similar to non-anomalous fireflies except for the light that SCP-XXXX instances emit and the behavior of SCP-XXXX in certain situations. The most common emitted lights and the environment which cause them are as follows:

Blue-Purple Laboratory Conditions SCP-XXXX travels in a random pattern around the room
Yellow-Green Conditions matching SCP-XXXX's habitat SCP-XXXX hovers in place or lands on any flora surrounding it
Red-Orange Conditions not favorable to SCP-XXXX biology or conditions that put SCP-XXXX in immediate danger SCP-XXXX increases altitude and groups up with any other SCP-XXXX instances in the area before flying erratically

Discovery: SCP-XXXX instances were first discovered during the Second World War in the Pacific theater. Allied forces stationed on the islands shortly after the end of the war began reporting a large amount of light from the forests believing that pockets of Japanese forces stilled remained. After discovering that the lights were caused by SCP-XXXX the men began collecting the instances as island keepsakes. A Foundation researcher stationed on the Phillipines was the first to decode the lighting patterns from SCP-XXXX. [See Addendum SCP-XXXX K]
