Item #: SCP-1343

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-1343 is to be stored in a combination locked steel safe within containment of a smaller heavy locked lead box. It is also specifically accessible by one or two officials entrusted with its research and responsible, careful handling. At times officials trusted with its handling will be given a small fire arm in case of attempted theft by other parties desiring its function. They have been instructed to shoot on sight should theft or unauthorized use be attempted.

Description: SCP-1343 is an object discovered at a construction site in ██████; it resembles a normal silver administrative key with a square base and a label on it written in marker titled "Roof Door." Said "Roof Door" key has the ability to open literally any door in any part of the world that operates with a Traditional locks. So far, the "Roof Door" key works with standard Padlocks, Deadbolts, Knob Locks, Lever Handle Locks, Cam Locks, Rim/Mortise Locks, Euro Profile Cylinders, Wall Mounted Locks, and many more.

It lacks a digital function, though and does not access other forms of locks including card operated locks, facial scanning, retinal scanning or voice recognition.

"Roof Door" can access and open literally any door making it a tool for aspiring thieves and criminals. The one major bug in the artifact being that there isn't always a guarantee said key will open the door to the actual intended room.

Often times when the key is implemented for entry in to a room, the subject will end up in another place entirely. Accounts from surviving users of SCP-1343 report opening the door to a bank only to end up in a broom closet, while another user opened an apartment door with intent to break and enter, and found himself stuck in an abandoned drain tunnel. Said subject was discovered three days later by construction workers.

The Foundation has enlisted various willing subjects to implement use of SCP-1343 on dummy doors, attempting to understand its function, but the even dummy doors inevitably led somewhere. A few subjects were utterly unimpressed, explaining that they'd merely opened the door to a mundane basement or parking lot, while the others were much more extraordinary.

One subject reported opening the door in to pure almost sentient darkness void of any known light source that almost seemed to pull them in to the void.

Another test subject seemingly opened the door to what can only be described as the middle of the cosmos.

Tests were immediately discontinued when the final subject opened the door for a moment, and slammed it shut devolving in to an emotional breakdown. Said subject had to be restrained by twelve medical officials and heavily sedated. They inevitably died hours later from heart failure. It's unknown what the subject experienced, but the they did confide in one of the lab technicians merely declaring "I saw it" before fading in to a coma.

Various agents have been activated near the site of discovery for the "roof door" key to see if anyone living near ██████ have used the key, what their initial results were prior to usage, and perhaps explain who or what created the "Roof Door" key.

Addendum: Despite discontinuing tests on "Roof Door," our theorists and scientists have tested the key for its origins, analyzed its material, and even explored the likelihood of it being cognizant/conscious of its users and surroundings.

Little progress has been made, although some samples for its material have been taken revealing a mixture of copper, metal, and an as of yet unidentified substance.
