Item #: SCP-5XXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: Following Incident-5XXX-Psi, the remains of Provisional Site-5XXX are to remain in a broken state covering SCP-5XXX. The lawsuit between Shree Chhatrapati Provisions and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is to continue indefinitely to create a cover story for the ruined lot. SCP-5XXX must be monitored by no less than 6 personnel in shifts of 2 during the months of June, July and August to ensure continued containment. At least one new instance of SCP-5XXX-2 must be created every monsoon season.
Instances of SCP-5XXX-2 are to be monitored for any further psychological anomalies. As the long-term effects of entering SCP-5XXX are unknown, periodic checks must be made on those instances currently released to the public.
Description: SCP-5XXX is a manhole located on ████████ Road, Mumbai. Under normal conditions, SCP-5XXX functions as a normal manhole leading to the Mumbai sewer system. SCP-5XXX functions as a portal to an unknown underwater space (SCP-5XXX-1) during conditions of ongoing heavy rainfall, with rainwater levels in excess of 193mm on ████████ Road.
When the conditions are met, persons entering within 5m of SCP-5XXX may be swept by rainwater into SCP-5XXX. Persons entering SCP-5XXX, designated SCP-5XXX-2, emerge from SCP-5XXX 5-8 days later, during similar heavy rainfall conditions. Only one instance of SCP-5XXX-2 may be 'within' SCP-5XXX-1 at any given time; the portal closes for this duration and will not reopen until the SCP-5XXX-2 instance emerges to the surface. Attempts to follow the SCP-5XXX-2 instance into SCP-5XXX-1 are met with failure, with those attempting to follow entering the Mumbai sewer system normally.
SCP-5XXX-2 instances claim to have no memory of their time within SCP-5XXX-1. They are physiologically and genetically identical to their pre-submergence selves; however, psychological changes have been observed in the majority of instances. Clothing and personal effects of SCP-5XXX-2 instances show aging and damage consistent with prolonged submergence in salt water.
Discovery: The Foundation became aware of SCP-5XXX after Foundation assets within █████ Hospital reported a patient (later designated SCP-5XXX-2-1) with pneumonia who had been missing for 7 days without any memory of the period. An investigation revealed the existence of SCP-5XXX on ████████ Road. Following the discovery of SCP-5XXX, the area around it was purchased by Shree Chhatrapati Provisions. Provisional Site-5XXX was constructed on the area, encroaching onto the road in order to completely surround SCP-5XXX. Pre-existing instances of SCP-5XXX-2 were tracked down and brought to Provisional Site-5XXX for interviewing; a majority were later amnesticized and released.
