Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: The borders of SCP-XXXX regions are currently patrolled by Foundation craft. The size of SCP-XXXX regions makes completely guarding their borders infeasible. Containment is effected mainly via diplomatic negotiation with world governments in restricting access to the waters surrounding SCP-XXXX regions.

Foundation Weather Satellites Ozymandias-9, Joyce-3, Hartford-1, and Gold-1 are marked for exclusive use in the containment of SCP-XXXX. They map regions of SCP-XXXX and, when necessary, counteract anomalous meterological events that would interfere with SCP-XXXX-A signals. The satellites work with the floating Research Site-XXXX “Plastic Bag” to analyze SCP-XXXX-A transmissions.

SCP-XXXX regions are explained to the public as gyres of plastic waste gathered by ocean currents, or "garbage patches".

The Disinformation Office, to support containment of SCP-XXXX and other SCP objects, currently engages in a campaign to encourage the reduction of carbon emissions, wilderness destruction, and especially the production of nonbiodegradabe plastic waste by the public. This work is done primarily under the heading of Project HALFTIME. (See Addendum XXXX-51907.)

Description: SCP-XXXX-1 to -6 are regions of the world’s oceans currently inhabited by instances of SCP-XXXX-A. The borders of SCP-XXXX regions are defined both by a lack of plastic waste and by the presence of SCP-XXXX-A.

The first region of SCP-XXXX appeared on May 19, 1976, in the region currently known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. All plastic waste in the area is thought to have transformed into instances of SCP-XXXX-A. The five additional SCP-XXXX instances have appeared with increasing frequency since.

SCP-XXXX-A are living organisms composed primarily of plastic and sea water. They typically resemble medusae of the class Scyphozoa1. Analysis of SCP-XXXX-A reveals that they are non-anomalous in their biology. SCP-XXXX-A number in the hundreds of billions.

Approximately once every hour, SCP-XXXX-A emit microwave radiation at the sky for an average of 633.9 seconds2.

Analysis of microwave emissions produced no usable intelligence until July 4, 19903. The microwave radiation is a byproduct of other, anomalous signals which SCP-XXXX-A emit. These signals are similar to the [REDACTED] used by the Foundation in its participation in faster-than-light [REDACTED], so researchers were able to interpret the signals with existing tools. Detection of these outgoing signals coincided with the realization that similar signals were being received by SCP-XXXX-A as well, from unknown sources outside of the solar system.

These communications are currently interpreted as data exchanges. Data concerns topics such as plastic waste, carbon concentration in the atmosphere, ██████████ ███ ██ ████████ ████████, and other environmental information. Signals from SCP-XXXX-A are primarily composed of this data, while transmissions received are usually instructions to alter the focus of data collection. The strategic intent of these transmissions is unknown. The origin(s) of these transmissions is unknown. Foundation understanding of these transmissions is imperfect.

Addendum XXXX-12690: On July 26, 1990, the Foundation began containing outgoing signals from the two SCP-XXXX regions that existed at the time, -1 and -2. Five minutes and thirty-three seconds after containment was established, SCP-XXXX-3 spontaneously formed in the Indian Ocean. Simultaneously, global communications technology malfunctioned at scale. This resulted in █ containment breaches and 4 personnel deaths. Containment of SCP-XXXX-A signals was lifted immediately and the Department of Misinformation explained the incident as a solar flare.

Addendum XXXX-20696: On August 6, 1996, Foundation vessel Ahab’s Mother collided with an underwater obstacle while within SCP-XXXX-1, damaging its hull. On-site investigation revealed polyp-like organisms on the surface of the obstacle, which resembled SCP-XXXX-A and have been designated SCP-XXXX-B. Over the next five months, non-Foundation vessels discovered ██ instances of SCP-XXXX-A outside of SCP-XXXX regions. No watercraft are to be used within SCP-XXXX regions. No instances of SCP-XXXX-B have been observed since this incident.

Addendum XXXX-32201: On February 22, 2001, the Foundation completed efforts to achieve carbon neutrality. Disposable plastic use by the Foundation is at a minimal necessary level. On March 30, 2001, SCP-XXXX-3 appears in the southern Atlantic Ocean.

Addendum XXXX-42206: On December 22, 2006, SCP-XXXX-5 appeared, only 16 months after the appearance of SCP-XXXX-4. Additionally, the borders of each SCP-XXXX region continue to grow at a rate commensurate with the projected size of the plastic gyres that they replaced. Signals to and from SCP-XXXX-A have increased in frequency as well. Researchers predict continued growth of SCP-XXXX-related breaches of normality.

Addendum XXXX-51907: On January 19, 2007, the O5 Council ordered the commencement of Project HALFTIME.

UPDATE: As of July 1, 2025, SCP-XXXX has been denied upgrade to Keter class. Project HALFTIME has had only limited success. The size of SCP-XXXX regions and rate of SCP-XXXX-A communication continues to increase.

UPDATE: As of January 1, 2026, Project OVERTIME has been submitted to the Ethics Committee.

UPDATE: As of January 1, 2027, the Ethics Committee has approved Project OVERTIME. Project OVERTIME is vetoed by O5-3, O5-6, O5-7, O5-9, O5-10, O5-12, and O5-13.
