Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be stored in a standard Safe-class locker in Site-216. Access to SCP-XXXX requires the supervision of a staff member with a security clearance level of 4 or higher. All exploration personnel in SCP-XXXX-EX must be carrying communication devices. Exploration personnel should request the assistance of SCP-XXXX-1 instances to determine the safety of a tome or object before interacting with it.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a 3 m X 5 m oil-on-canvas painting that depicts the interior of a cathedral-like structure. Individuals can enter the painting, which transports them to an extra-dimensional space designated SCP-XXXX-EX. An individual who enters SCP-XXXX-EX can return to our world by stepping through the painting in front of the structure's entrance, which depicts the location SCP-XXXX is currently in.
From the main chamber of SCP-XXXX-EX, two separate chambers are accessible. The chamber to the right is stacked with bookshelves, which contain tomes composed of an ash-like material. The chamber to the left is filled with cabinets which have various objects within them. Both chambers have a width of 21 m, an indeterminate length, and a height of 15 m. Stained glass windows that are 5 m in length and 11 m in height are dispersed in 7 m intervals. A cemetery in a courtyard is visible through the anterior windows, while a city of Victorian-era architecture is visible through the posterior windows. Both areas are covered in ash. The landscape visible from these windows does not change, regardless of the distance the viewer has traveled.
The bookshelves and cabinets within the chambers are spaced in rows with 5 m intervals, with a torch with gray flames placed on the side of each bookshelf or cabinet. A central walkway and 2 outer walkways of 1 m divide these rows into two 9 m long columns. The bookshelves and cabinets are 11 m high, with platforms placed at 3 m intervals, which are accessible with ladders. The cabinets have doors of varying sizes, which corresponds to the size of the object within.
Within SCP-XXXX-EX resides SCP-XXXX-A and instances of SCP-XXXX-1. SCP-XXXX-A is a humanoid entity that appears to be a cloaked woman. Both SCP-XXXX-A and its garments are composed of an ash-like material. It is amiable to Foundation personnel, and provides assistance when politely requested. SCP-XXXX-1 refers to multiple sapient entities that are composed of the ash-like material, most of which do not resemble any known lifeforms. SCP-XXXX-1 instances are unable to or unwilling to speak, but will assist Foundation personnel when politely requested. SCP-XXXX-1 instances follow the orders of SCP-XXXX-A. Attempts to take SCP-XXXX-1 instances out of SCP-XXXX-EX has been deterred by SCP-XXXX-A.
Due to the unchanging surroundings, individuals exploring the two chambers of SCP-XXXX-EX are highly likely to lose their sense of direction. Lost individuals can request help from nearby SCP-XXXX-1 instances, or call SCP-XXXX-A by passing their hand through the flames of a torch. This action does not harm the individual, but causes SCP-XXXX-A to appear next to them. An individual can request for SCP-XXXX-A to transport them with it, allowing for instantaneous travel within the chambers.
New tomes and objects form within the chambers at a steady rate1 within the bookshelf and cabinet closest to the entrances. When the bookshelf or cabinet is completely filled, it will be pushed back, and an empty bookshelf or cabinet will appear in its place. The tomes and objects can be taken out of SCP-XXXX-EX, where they will stay until forgotten, at which point they will disappear and reappear in their original positions within SCP-XXXX-EX. Additionally, the tomes will disintegrate when read, and will reform when the reader forgets the tome's contents.
The tomes contain memories that have been forgotten. Likewise, the objects have also been forgotten. If a tome contains information forgotten by an individual, such as a personal memory, the individual will be drawn to it. Similarly, objects that were once owned by an individual will draw the owner to itself. Affected individuals have been able to locate these items without error, but will still likely require guidance from SCP-XXXX-A or an SCP-XXXX-1 instance to return to the entrance.
When an individual discovers an object with an associated memory that has been forgotten, a tome containing the memory will appear next to the object. An event akin to this happens when an individual discovers a tome with an associated object: the object will appear next to the tome.
For a tome to appear within SCP-XXXX-EX, the intelligent creature who originally held that memory must forget it. Objects hold a comparable criteria; all intelligent creatures who remember the object must forget it. The loss of memory must be severe enough for a creature to be unable to remember the memory or object, even if psychologically prompted.
