Item #: SCP-4938
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4938 is to be kept in a 3m×3m airtight cell with walls made of stainless steel. No personnel are to be allowed inside the cell without at least level 3 authorization. There is to be an armed guard outside the cell at all times, guards requiring extensive psychological testing bi-weekly. Guards are required to be rotated every 3.5 hours, or upon psychological distress. No flammable materials or combustible items are to be allowed in the cell at any time.
If prolonged access is to be made with SCP-4938 by any unauthorized personnel for any amount of time, said personnel are to be terminated, if not contained.
Description: SCP-4938 is a book, bound in a leather-like material of currently unknown origin. The cover brands a worn, unintelligible inscription, the only legible lettering being “Jane”. SCP-4938 was found in an abandoned cottage in the [REDACTED] mountains of [REDACTED], U.S.A. It is mostly unknown of what is written in SCP-4931, considering the inability to study the text. Spoken language does not seem to be a factor in readability, as people of all languages have been affected by SCP-4938.
SCP-4938 seems to psychologically manipulate people into reading it, personnel feeling obligated to and desperately wanting access to SCP-4938. Willpower and mental stability seem to be factors in SCP-4938’s ability to manipulate people. Sounds of a crying young adult female emanating from the cell have been reported by multiple cell guards. No audio recording devices have been able to support these claims.
A person that reads the contents of the book is classified as SCP-4938-1. Upon reading SCP-4938, the subject's pupils begin to dilate by about 500%, nearly covering the iris, and they have an increase in production of dopamine, serotonin and phenylethylamine, instilling a “lovestruck” sensation. It seems to be impossible for SCP-4938-1 to stop reading once they've begun, and any attempt to intervene will cause the intervening party to enter a permanent catatonic state. After roughly 10 minutes of reading, SCP-4938-1 will close the book and begin sobbing uncontrollably with high amounts of blood in their tears, as well as inflicting harm on themselves and anyone in the vicinity.
120 minutes after the opening of the book, SCP-4938-1 will calm down, sitting on the floor and saying “I need to find my place” continuously. They will remain in this state either until death due to malnutrition, or another being enters the room, in which SCP-4938-1 will attack them. SCP-4938-1 will show superhuman strength and stamina, able to easily break human bone. As SCP-4938-1 attacks, it will tell the victim to “Find their place”. SCP-4938 is highly flammable, even for leather and paper. When burnt, SCP-4938 will burn to ash, being manifested again in its original location. It is unknown how this occurs.
Addendum 4931-1: Experiment Log
D-Class subject D-4024, a middle aged Caucasian female, was asked to read a maximum of 5 pages out of SCP-4931. Upon beginning, the subject became unresponsive, sobbing to herself uncontrollably. She had read much more than the specified amount, even after threats of termination and transfer to [REDACTED]. She closed the book after exactly 10 minutes of reading, looking into the cell camera citing “I need to find my place. Please come help me.” It was at this time that D-0157 was sent into the room. Upon entrance, D-4024 attacked D-0157. The autopsy of D-0157 showed the sternum crushed, multiple fractured ribs, both lungs having been punctured, both femurs broken, and the [DATA EXPUNGED]. The cause of death was a crushed cranium, causing fatal damage to the frontal and temporal lobes.
