Item #: SCP-5092

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures:

Description: SCP-5092 is is a peppermint plant1, colored primarily blue, this plant requires no fertilization, water, or sunlight to grow, and will regrow cut leaves and stems unnaturally quickly, and can regrow from a cut stump to a full plant within 10 minutes, however this process can be halted and completely stopped with heat, any temperature above 40°C will cause the growing and regeneration of an SCP-5092-1 specimen to halt, and if a specimen is left in such heat for 5-7 minutes, depending on the size of the sample, will die and shrivel, this can be eaten with no repercussions. Mature SPC-5092 specimens expel a heavy minty odor, any living creature that smells will feel compelled to eat a leaf of SCP-5092-1.

Once the leaf of a mature SCP-5092 plant is consumed, any sort of liquids2 currently inside of the body will suddenly drop in temperature, to a degree as low as -48°C, this process takes around 5 minutes, though subjects usually die within 45 seconds, as every circulator process within the body stops. Within 10-30 minutes after death, subjects body will begin to sprout more SCP-5092 specimens, those growing into mature plants within 25-30 minutes, after another hour and 30 minutes, a message written in mint gum of a currently unknown brand will manifest on a wall in 50m radius away from SCP-5092, this message reads, "They3 smell wonderful now." This gum displays the same effect once consumed as consuming a mature SCP-5092 plant, and traces of SCP-5092 were found in the gum.

SCP-5092 was originally found on the ███████████ farm in ██████, Washington, on ██/██/██ it was brought to foundation attention when several missing reports are filed of people who were last seen working at or visiting the farm every missing poster concerning these individuals were covered in the same graffiti as described above, no vandal was seen at the time this occurred, though there were multiple reports of a strong minty smell in the area of the posters a short time before the vandalization occurred. In a raid on the farm conducted by MTF Theta-4, (Gardeners) SCP-5092 is found in a barn near the outskirts, this barn was infested with SCP-5092 specimens, though no other plants similar to SCP-5092 were found at the location, while 6 MTF operatives were sent to obtain and contain the object, 3 were killed when they fell to the effects of the odor subsequently eating some of SCP-5092 and causing more to grow, the 3 remaining operatives secure 15 samples of SCP-5092, the rest were left in the barn and destroyed later. The bodies of Harold ██████, Susie ███████, and Charles ████ were found near SCP-5092's original recovery site, they were all infested with SCP-5092 specimens, and they were all hidden behind a boarded up wall in the barn containing SCP-5092.

A peppermint plant that's freezing cold at all times, frostbite occurs much quicker than normal when touching it, as quick as 10-30 seconds, it lowers in temperature when cut to a point where its safe to eat, any time the mint is eaten over the course of an hour and a half a minty smell begins to radiate from whoever ate it last, until they mysteriously vanish out of thin air, infrared scanners have shown that a humanoid entity with an extremely low body temperature appears to manifest in the general location of the last person to have consumed some mint, appears to touch the person, and they vanish, all that is left is a small package of mint bubblegum with the persons full name, birthday, and day before they were taken by the entity, all written in place of product name, sell by date, and expiration date, alongside a message written on the nearest wall or other surface that reads "They [the last person to have been taken by the entity] smell wonderful now."

Seeking Greenlights: Yes

Page Type: SCP Article

Elevator Pitch: A peppermint plant that's freezing cold at all times, that when eaten will cause the last person to have eaten it be taken away by an entity that manifests nearest to the person who most recently ate some of the mint, this entity only being visible via infrared lenses, it being incredibly cold. When the person is taken, a stick of gum with the persons name, birthday, and exact time before they were taken manifests in place of the person, alongside a message written mint gum plastered on the nearest wall or other similar surface that reads, "They (The most recently taken person) smell wonderful now." It has been noted that since the peppermint has been brought into foundation custody, personnel have noted they feel a cold and unnatural presence when alone or near the peppermint, and sometimes smell mint out of nowhere.

Central Narrative: The foundation is alerted of the mint when over 30 missing persons reports are filled around a mint farm in Washington, all were close friends or family of the owner of the farm, and every missing poster with information of these individuals were covered in the same message as described above, alongside local gas stations and stores beginning to sell the bubblegum as described above, the anomalous gum usually mixed in with the typical brands of gum, there were multiple reports of a minty smell in the air around the time the posters were vandalized.

On a raid conducted on the mint farm the peppermint was located in, 7 MTF Theta-4 (Gardeners) operatives were sent in, and found the peppermint in the former owner of the mint farms home, which was on the farm itself, inside they found a recipe book written by the owner, detailing recipes that utilize the anomalous peppermint, alongside a small greenhouse containing multiple more samples of the peppermint, alongside a half eaten mint pie, 12 individual sticks of the anomalous mint gum, one was different, and was in a and a notebook written by the owner of the mint farm filled with seemingly insane rambling, most in pen, but some in the same peppermint gum as described in the messages above, it appears the owner was communicating with the entity, and it presumably chose this person for their love of mint, and as described in later pages of the journal, it shared secrets, secrets on how to create the anomalous peppermint, though this secret was only described as "It was so simple, cant believe I hadn't thought of it myself." Alongside a message in gum reading, "Do not fear, I know more than you ever will." The secret to creating the peppermint is currently unknown.

Hook/Attention-Grabber: Haven't seen an SCP that takes the whole "Mint is cold." thing to a more literal extreme, though that isn't the main focus of the SCP, its more about the mystery and lack of much knowledge on the entity that produces the gum and the gum messages, which gives a lot of open room for tales and other forms of extra information that could be theorized and thought about.
