Item #: SCP-4373
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4373 is to be contained in a soundproofed object locker with a padded interior.
Description: SCP-4373 is a webcam resembling the E3210 Desktop model manufactured in Shenzhen, China in 2014 by the SanDRO Corporation. It can record video in 720p at 30 frames per second and includes two microphones which can record stereo audio. The microphone on SCP-4373's left side is damaged.
SCP-4373’s anomalous properties manifest when it is connected to a power source via USB cable. When this conditions are met, SCP-4373 will swivel and tilt its camera via unknown means. SCP-4373 moves in reaction to both audio (usually on the side of its undamaged microphone) and visual stimuli. SCP-4373 consistently aims its camera at humans within the area it can monitor, tracking their movements. Rudimentary communication with SCP-4373 is possible. Subjects watched by SCP-4373 experience no apparent anomalous effects.
Discovery: Foundation personnel recovered SCP-4373 in Bellingham, Washington. The previous owner purchased SCP-4373 online from an anonymous seller, then shortly afterward posted on a technical help forum claiming that his camera had been “hacked” and was watching him. After being alerted to the existence of the post by a staff member, Foundation agents determined that SCP-4373 had anomalous properties, retrieved it under the guise of SanDRO employees, and supplied a non-anomalous replacement.
The Foundation tracked the vendor that sold SCP-4373 to an apartment in Burbank, California. The sole resident, a 43-year-old man named William Butler, went missing several weeks prior. Outside the apartment was a package, delivered shortly after Butler’s disappearance, containing a hearing aid that he had purchased from an online retailer. Evidence of a physical conflict between unknown individuals (damage to walls and furniture, Butler's collection of vinyl records scattered on the floor) was discovered inside.
Addendum 1: Prior to Interview 2, Researcher Fuentes developed a means by which SCP-4373 could communicate by movements, based on a chart held in front of SCP-4373 (see File 4373.F.1).
Addendum 2: Following Researcher Park's transfer to Site-19, Researcher Fuentes petitioned for testing to resume on SCP-4373. The request was granted by Deputy Site Director Hamada on 11/13/18.
Addendum 3: On 12/18/18, Researcher Fuentes submitted a proposal that SCP-4373 be terminated. The request was denied by Deputy Site Director Hamada, and Fuentes was transferred to Site-103.
