Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be surrounded by a chain-link fence and be patrolled by no less than four armed guards at all times. SCP-XXXX instances are to be supplied with electricity and water like a normal house would. One agent is to be stationed at each instance and should undergo monthly psychological evaluation and be relocated bi-annually.

If any of the instances were to enter a distressed state, water and electricity services should be kept on-site to prevent a possible containment breach. If any of these instances fail in being returned to a docile state, MTF Psi-7 ("Home Improvement") is to be deployed for re-containment of it. If re-containment is impossible, Procedure 433-Sledgehammer should be carried out.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a suburban neighborhood located west of the city of New Orleans, LA, USA. SCP-4841-1 through -19 are identical houses located in XXXX. These instances will act on their own, doing household chores by anomalous means, such as cleaning and drying clothing, cooking meals and cleaning its interior. If any of these activities require materials that are currently not available, it will not carry these out.

Each SCP-XXXX instance appears to have full control of any elements which were in itself at the time of discovery as well as any foreign objects that are connected to it through plumbing or wiring. SCP-XXXX instances control these elements by making them hover through an unknown process. Any element not plugged in will not be affected. Any remotely-controlled devices that were connected at some point to this instance will be controlled by it until it is removed from the instance in question.1

SCP-XXXX instances appear to be sentient, as they react positively when water and electricity is provided or when a person remaining in the house has its basic needs satisfied.

If SCP-XXXX is not capable of carrying out household chores or spends prolonged periods of time without human contact, this instance will enter a distressed state and use water pipes as limbs to move to an area that satisfies this needs and anomalously adapt itself with its environment, by attaching its plumbing and electrical system to any existing ones and anomalously creating a 'For Sale' sign near itself. This sign produces a memetic effect making viewers have an extreme desire to move in this SCP-XXXX instance, and will do so if not treated properly.2

Discovery: SCP-XXXX was discovered after documents belonging to ████████ Inc., a successor company of Prometheus Labs, were leaked. It was discovered that officials of this company were living in SCP-XXXX instances. On 07/03/2005, Foundation agents successfully captured ████████'s employees residing in SCP-XXXX and implemented current secure containment procedures. The following document is an interview with Raphael ██████, CEO of said company who was residing in SCP-XXXX-17.

Interviewed: Raphael ██████, CEO of ████████ Inc.

Interviewer: Dr. Lewis

Foreword: Interview was carried out to determine in origin of item and knowledge of said item of the interviewed person.

Interviewer: Hello, Mr. ██████.

Person: Hey, what's this all about? Is this some kind of questioning? Cause I have no drugs, at least not anymore.

Interviewer: Relax, you're here so we can ask you a few questions about the place you were residing in.

Person: Oh, the houses? Good product, but we couldn't find any buyers, so, until then, we were using them. Pretty nice having someone that helps you with everything.

Interviewer: I'm sorry, but did you just say 'someone'?

Person: Well yeah, it's not like those houses were that way all the time.

Interviewer: Then how did they become… the way they are now?

Person: We did some experiments, back in Prometheus, and used "volunteers" to help us. I don't know how they did it, but it made people's "souls" into these things, and, after some brainstorming, we decided to make the first autonomous houses, but then, the company went to hell and some us made ████████ Inc. and kept these houses when everyone started to leave.

Interviewer: Well, Mr. ██████, you've been a great help.

Person: Hey, can I ask a favor from you guys?

Interviewer: It depends, what's your request?

Person: I may not be the brightest, but I know who you guys are, that's why I told you all this, so I'm only asking for one thing from you. Don't hurt the houses, they might be objects, but they have someone's "souls", I might call it. They just want some company.

Interviewer: I'll see what I can do.

Closing Statement: ████████ Inc. employees detained on 07/03/2005 were amnesticized and released without incident.

Breach Incident 4841-I: On 29/08/2005, the city of New Orleans, and, by extension, SCP-XXXX, was struck by hurricane Katrina. As a result, SCP-XXXX—20 entered a distressed state, possibly because of the impending danger, and fled its containment area, along Agent Lapointe, who was inside of it. SCP-XXXX-20 attempted to outrun the storm, but was caught in a flooded area and was unable to move. SCP-XXXX-20 was found on ██/██/2005, several weeks after the storm, and was found destroyed, along with Agent Lapointe's body. The following recording was found in her body.

<Begin Log>

Agent Lapointe: Is this thing on? Damn, really cliché thing to say. Ok, this is Agent Lapointe, reporting from SCP-XXXX-20, or at least what's left of it. I'm trapped under rubble and can't move, so now I'm either waiting for death or rescue. I've been here for, fuck, who knows? Maybe two days? Fuck, I just had to pick this line of work. Sorry, I'm going off topic. The main reason I'm recording is to help some egghead do research in a secret lab while field agents are out there risking their lives in fucking hurricanes and god knows what more. But, I'm not recording to complain, at least not anymore.

The surprising thing is that this instance of XXXX breached containment to escape the storm. The others did not. It started moving towards higher ground, but we just ended up in some ditch, with no way of getting out. But, get this, it wanted to protect me. I know it sounds crazy, but it did. Why did you think the other instances stay put? I was the only agent on-site, the rest were embedded in local response units. Besides, the only reason I'm trapped is because -20 here used the last of its forces to shield me. If it weren't for that, you would have to scrape by brain off of a bathtub.

My point is, this things are sentient, and should be treated as such. One of these saved my life, although it then damned me with a slow death. Hell, I thought these were just weird things up until now, now I wonder how many of the stuff we have are actually alive. Write that in your report, Dr. Lewis, smug bastard. Test it all you want, I am (or was) living proof of that.
