A picture of SCP-XXXX taken from the second floor
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is part of a concrete structure and thus cannot be easily moved. The building containing SCP-XXXX must be locked and secured at both entrances, with signs discouraging entry. Only SCP Foundation staff are permitted to access SCP-XXXX, any and all trespassing civilians must be removed from the premises.
Description: SCP-XXXX is located in a 5 story concrete apartment building at 713 [REDACTED] Street, in [REDACTED], Illinois. It is a stairwell that unpredictably and discreetly changes a user's elevation relative to the steps, sometimes repeating once or multiple times. A noted side effect of this is a significant fluctuation in temperature throughout the user of SCP-XXXX. The stairwell is made of concrete, with railings of metal placed on both sides of the stairwell. It is unknown if SCP-XXXX is sentient and intentionally using its abilities.
According to city records, 713 [REDACTED] Street, and SCP-XXXX, were built in 20██, designed by architect Frank Darrow. Darrow was reported missing shortly after construction of SCP-XXXX was completed. Attempts to locate Darrow are under consideration.
Addendum #1: SCP-XXXX's anomalous nature was discovered on 01/07/20██ by the tenant of apartment 402, Martin Ross. The elevator was out of service in the building. When Ross ascended the stairs, he repeated the same flight of stairs approximately 10 times, each time his body elevating in temperature, before falling unconscious due to a severe case of hyperthermia. Shortly after, a woman found Ross unconscious on the second floor of the stairwell and called emergency services.
Audio log from Interview XXXX-1
Interviewed: Martin Ross, the tenant of apartment 402
Interviewer: Dr. ████
Foreword: Martin Ross was questioned about the events of 01/07/20██.
<Begin Log>
Dr. ████ Mr. Ross, do you know why you're here?
Martin Ross It's about those stairs, isn't it?
Dr. ████ That's correct. If you don't mind, let's talk about what happened on July first.
Martin Ross Well, the elevator was broken, so I had to use the stairs to get to my apartment. But when I used the stairs, I kept going up to the same floor
Experiment XXXX-e-1
Names: Dr. ████ with Dr. ██████ and Dr. ███ assisting.
Date: 08/04/20██
Procedure: D-class subject is to follow Dr. ████ to the second-floor landing of 713 [REDACTED] Street, where two other researchers will be stationed. The test is to be observed from the second-floor landing, and the local temperature of the test subject's surroundings will be recorded. The D-class subject will be instructed to walk up one flight of stairs starting from the second floor, to determine whether it is safe to use the stairwell.
Results: Subject D-14375 is instructed to walk up one flight of stairs. The subject is told of SCP-XXXX's nature, as to not cause distress in the subject during the duration of the test. The subject does as instructed, and is observed to ascend from one side of the stairwell, then emerges from the other side, as if the subject had originated from the floor below. The subject shows surprise but is calm enough to return to the second-floor landing. The local temperature of the subject's surroundings was recorded as rising 1.238 degrees Celsius from room temperature. Test ended.
//Note: This experiment proves that the stairwell is safe to use, although, like the original victim, repeated use could increase the temperature to potentially lethal levels. //
Addendum #2 Measurements were taken of the dimensions of the stairwell on 09/04/20██. The height difference between each floor's landing is exactly 3 meters, and each side of the stairwell has 12 steps, each of them being 12.5 centimeters tall. Using these measurements, a hypothesis has been formed that the temperature increase of 1.238 degrees Celcius is SCP-XXXX's way of reclaiming the potential energy lost by effectively teleporting a subject 3 meters. Although the method of teleportation is not known, this conclusion suggests that these stairs do not break the laws of thermodynamics and destroy energy, as its anomalous abilities would suggest.
