SCP- The Desktop Virus

Item #: SPC-

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: The subject is currently confined within a secure computer system housed at the * ** facility in the * ** desert.
The host network is located within a sealed radio, light, and sound proofed 5-meter square inner chamber held in the centre of a secured outer chamber. Entrance to the inner chamber is restricted to one thematically sealed door. Entrance to the outer chamber is restricted to authorised personnel only.

The inner chamber sits on a 1500mm raised platform composed of non-conductive plastic. Power is supplied via a locally housed petroleum generator. Power is disabled whenever the system is not being studied. Lack of power does not appear to affect the subject entity. The inner chamber walls are comprised of 5mm interior steel casing surrounded on both sides by a 50mm composition of fibreglass and vinyl. This is separated from the internal steel frame by a dead-air space of 20mm and covered on the outer surface by 20mm plasterboard walls, coated in EM-SEC paint.
The entire structure is further covered by aluminium infused 5mm felt blackout curtain suspended from the ceiling of the outer-room by non-conducting rope. Staff entering the inner enclosure must ensure no surplus external light is present before activating the chamber door.

The outer chamber is an unmodified containment room used to house a range of electronic jamming and monitoring equipment to ensure no form of electronic communications escapes from within the inner containment cell.
Said equipment must be constantly supervised and maintained by no fewer than two category 3 staff members at all times.
Under no circumstance should the subject be allowed access to any form of external network, computing hardware, data storage devices, or other variety of electronic device capable of storing information.

No less that three category 2 staff may enter the room at any one time, two of which must under no circumstance look at the monitor screen, nor interact with the subject in any way. These staff members must be monitored by a forth staff member situated outside the inner chamber whilst they are inside.
After 9 minutes, or at the first sign of anxiety or aggressive behaviour, the staff member operating the system must leave the inner containment facility. If the operator refuses or resists the escort staff are authorised to administer a Level-1 sedative and forcibly remove the operator from the facility. In severe cases a Class-B amnesiacs should be administered with immediate effect. The staff member may return to duty pending a full mental health examination.

Description: The subject is a 16Bit Desktop operating system, origins unknown.
Unsubstantiated accounts of the subject have been recounted circa mid 1990.
The first verified encounter was recorded on 1st of June 1995.
SPC- was caught in a purpose-built honey-trap system constructed in the * * **facility on 23rd of March 2010. This system was isolated from all external connections with immediate effect.

The subject appeared to have the ability to travel freely across the internet, unrestricted by any known security protocols. It appears capable of transferring itself by unconventional means. The exact nature of these transfers is not yet understood.
The subject appears dormant whilst traversing the Internet. When activated the subject downloads itself to an end-users computer system and proceeds to take over said system. The activation conditions, or selection process, for this behaviour is unknown at the current time.
The subject has failed to respond to Turing testing and is currently not deemed sapient.
Further testing by Dr. * evidenced that
.
[REDACTED]
Staff member * *
* * remains in a dormant but stable condition.

The subject appears reminiscent in visual style to an early GEM or OS/2 desktop operating system (circa 1989 - 1994). General appearance consists of a green background with black Icons. The screen font used appears to vary from system to system. Variations on this theme have been observed. Reports of the exact on-screen Icons vary.
It is theorised that the subject adapts its outward appearance based on the individual user – See document * ***.

An internal memo by Dr. ** indicated that SPC- is currently aware of the subject, and has committed this information to its storage memory.
When pressed SPC- refused to communicate further on the matter.
It is currently unknown how SPC- became aware of the subject.
A proposal by Dr. ** to allow SPC- access to analyse the subject at a code level has been denied.

Applications for further study must be approved by Dr. **.

Experiment Log -1a

Initial exposure testing:
Within 2 to 6 8 minutes of contact with the subject all D-class test-users (hereafter referred to as SCP1) began to complain of headaches and eye-strain. If removed from the immediate vicinity of the primary subject the SCP1 recovers within 2 to 3 minutes of withdrawal and shows no prolonged psychological or physical effects.

SCP1 subjects exposed for 10 to 20 minutes report audio-visual hallucinations of insects (generally flies, although this can vary) crawling over, or out of the monitor screen. The subjects have been observed attempting to interact with these hallucinatory objects.
When removed from the primary subject at this time SCP
1 test subjects show signs of increased paranoia and aggression. These symptoms may last for 3 to 5 hours, after which SCP—1 subjects show no prolonged psychological or physical effects.

SCP1 subjects left longer than 60 minutes generally begin to show more pronounced and dissimilar reactions to the audio-visual hallucinations and physical symptoms.
In 96% of studies the aggressive behaviour culminated in uncontrolled and violent reactions.
2% of the remaining SCP
1 subjects entered a catatonic state after 1 hour 15 minutes, never showing any violent reaction.
The other remaining 2% of cases wher** * ** ** *** * * ***.
In 81% of cases the SCP—1 subjects became self-abusive after 2 to 3 hours exposure. When left unrestrained this behaviour lead to self-termination in 52% of cases.

All surviving SCP1 subjects report similar initial experiences including headaches, nausea, hallucinations, flu-like symptoms, and dizziness, culminating in a loss of memory.
No surviving SCP
1 subjects recall any actions taken after 50 minutes of exposure.
All surviving SCP1 subjects that showed violent tendencies returned to a normal psychological state within 2 to 3 days.
All surviving SPC
1 subjects that * * * and * * ** with extreme predigest * ** and are currently subject to further study under the supervision of Dr. **.

*Catatonic SCP—1 subjects were removed from the test at this point.
Further testing is currently on hold, pending further investigation by Dr. ** ** into the covert security potential of the primary subject with respect to * ** * * **.

The 2% of SCP—1 subjects, along with staff member * * *, which * * * and may not be stable. As a result of this * * * has been reclassified as SCP-* . Further to * ** * amendments to procedure ** ** * is ongoing.
* * * ** * may constitute a serious breach of protocol.
Procedures to further * * * ** * are currently under review; although termination is still seen as a viable option.
