Special Containment Procedures: No less than twelve (12) atmospheric scrubbers1 are to be kept active at all times to remove particles of SCP-[number] from the air. The content of SCP-[number] in the atmosphere is to be continually monitored and the number of atmospheric scrubbers is to be increased if there are found to be more than five parts-per-trillion. In the event that an instance of SCP-[number]-1 is detected, MTF-gamma-19, "Objectivists", is to dispatched to its location. The more prevalent timeline is always the preferred one, and the minority timeline is to be extinguished using the temporal inertia devices2 as soon as possible to minimize risk of additional instances of SCP-[number]-1 occurring. Stored particles of SCP-[number] are to be kept at a temperature of -250 Celsius, and are to be constantly monitored for occurrences of SCP-[number]-1. Occurrences of SCP-[number]-1 inside containment are to be treated the same as outside containment, except for during testing.

Description: SCP-[number] is a naturally-occurring exotic atom with a half-life of one month that is formed when cosmic radiation interacts with [redacted] particles in Earth's upper atmosphere. It was previously classified as keter before the development of temporal inertia devices and atmospheric scrubbers reduced the risk of a runaway divergence event3 to acceptable levels. Atoms of SCP-[number] have a peculiar arrangement of electron orbitals which allow quantum wave-functions to build up to macroscopic levels without being collapsed by observation like non-anomalous wave-functions. These wavefuntions can be described as "Conjoined timelines", multiple timelines which do not split off into their own universes as happens naturally in the multiverse, but rather compete within a single universe, being spread by their affects on people and objects. When affected objects interact the least affected will be rewritten to match the "winning" timeline, causing discrepancies between the memories of individuals and different records of the same event. A more detailed description of SCP-[number]'s effects on causality can be found below4. Once a wave-function builds up to observable levels one of its possibilities is reclassified as an instance of SCP-[number]-1 and the other as the normal timeline. (In testing procedures this distinction is arbitrary and made at random, outside of containment the dominant timeline is considered to be the normal timeline) The probability of an occurrence is directly proportional to the number of conjoined timelines in existence, hence the possibility of a runaway divergence event, and the temperature of SCP-[number]'s particles. This probability is low since the levels in the atmosphere have been dramatically reduced by the atmospheric scrubbers, generally wild occurrences are three to five years apart. While SCP-[number] and instances of SCP-[number]-1 are not directly harmful, their effects on causality make containment breaches and other undesirable events more likely.

Discovery: SCP-[number] was first observed in 1956 in a rural Minnesota town. All records showed a task force responding to a false call, except for the below transcript which was transmitted to a rewritten storage device by a device that had not yet been rewritten, thus preserving it from the temporal erasing. It is unknown if this anomaly had been encountered previously as all records would have been erased. Analysis of local conditions at the time of the temporal split revealed an unusually high concentration of what was later classified as SCP-[number], which was believed to be non-anomalous at the time. The initial event that was different between the two timelines is believed to have been lightning which knocked over a tree, and is believed to have passed through an atom of SCP-[number]. MTF-gamma-19 has since been reassigned permanently to SCP-[number].

Testing Procedures: SCP-[number] and all instances of SCP-[number]-1 are to be kept in a sealed, soundproof, concrete container without windows, transmitting cameras, or any kind of connection to the outside. Any recording devices must store their data within the the containment chamber, and must be equipped with specialized storage drives5 to retain information from the collapsed timeline. The container must be completely isolated for the duration of the testing. Temporal inertia devices are to be charged with the chosen timeline upon the occurrence of SCP-[number]-1, and are to continually broadcast random light and noise generated from ambient light distribution in the selected timeline to the area surrounding the container so as to neutralize any leakage of SCP-[number]-1 into the surrounding environment. Occurrences of SCP-[number]-1 are to be neutralized at the conclusion of testing, before the chamber can be opened and the records viewed. Occurrences of SCP-[number]-1 can be generated by exciting particles of SCP-[number] with a laser to dramatically increase the probability of a conjoined timeline.

Additional Notes:

Do not attempt to use this SCP to undo timelines where disasters have occurred (unless the timeline contains a K-class scenario), as overcoming the dominant timeline will draw out the time it takes to neutralize instances of SCP-[number]-1, increasing the likelihood of more forming and the possibility of a runaway divergence event.
