Item #: 4375
Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: No further containment steps are required for SCP-4375 beyond storage in a locked drawer in the maintenance office of Site 76. Only the manager of the maintenance department of Site 76 is to be in possession of the key to the drawer. All site personnel are welcome to use SCP-4375 with formal or informal approval from the manager of the maintenance department presently on duty (Level 1 security clearance). Usage of SCP-4375 should be strictly limited to on-site, work related projects unless a formal request is submitted to and authorized by at least two (2) Level 3 personnel. Personnel who wish to use SCP-4375 and have obtained adequate permission must write their name, the date and time, and a brief reason for using SCP-4375 on a check-out sheet located on the wall next to the drawer containing SCP-4375, which will be referred to as SCP-4375-U. Upon returning SCP-4375, personnel who borrowed the object must then finalize their entry on SCP-4375-U by including the time SCP-4375 was locked back in the drawer by the maintenance manager on duty, who must also initial the entry to confirm SCP-4375 has been re-contained. If there are any entries written on SCP-4375-U at the end of each month, maintenance personnel must photocopy and attach SCP-4375-U to this file, titled in SCP-4375-U-MMDDYYYY format.

Description: SCP-4375 was recovered by foundation personnel responding to a minor furor over the anomalous properties of SCP-4375 at ████████ High School in ██████, █████, USA on ██████, ██th, 2018. None of the students or faculty who had been playing with SCP-4375 could offer any information as to its origin.
SCP-4375 is a seemingly unremarkable roll of self-retracting measuring tape. The casing of SCP-4375 features a sticker that is printed with the logo of US-based tool manufacturing company Stanley. Under this logo, the sticker is damaged where the maximum length of the measuring tape would normally be displayed, appearing to be scratched off. The tape inside the casing features both US and metric units. The anomalous properties of SCP-4375 become apparent when one attempts to extend the measuring tape to its maximum possible length. SCP-4375 does not seem to have any limitation on how far it can extend. Any attempt to open the casing or break SCP-4375 has proven unsuccessful – though this has been attempted few times due to the benign nature of the object [see experiment log 4375-A].

Experiment log 4375-A:
Date: 09/11/2018
Procedure: Researcher Jared Dunn will attempt to extend the tape of SCP-4375 as far as his resolve and patience will allow, with a goal of 50,000 feet.
Result: Researcher Dunn began extending the tape of SCP-4375 outside of Site 76 at 7:12am at a rate of approximately one foot per second. Researcher Dunn took a few dozen breaks throughout the experiment to rest his arms and use the restroom lasting no more than five (5) minutes each, and two (2) fifteen-minute breaks at 12:00pm and 4:30pm to have lunch and refill his water bottles respectively. Researcher Dunn was determined to extend SCP-4375 to his goal, however at 5:57pm maintenance staff requested Researcher Dunn to return SCP-4375, as it was nearly an hour past the scheduled end of their shifts. Researcher Dunn recorded 41,236 feet of tape extended and was reluctant to allow SCP-4375 to retract, likely due to the excessive amount of time spent conducting this experiment.
Due to the length of SCP-4375 after experiment 4375-A, SCP-4375 was allowed to remain outside of Site 76 under video surveillance to retract on its own before being returned to its containment drawer the next morning. When Researcher Dunn reported that this would likely be the only option to Dr. Eric Billings, Dr. Billings remarked, “is that what you’ve been doing all day?” with a disappointed look on his face.
