Special Containment Procedures: All devised methods to predict or prevent SCP-XXXX occurrences have been unsuccessful. A Foundation webcrawler is to monitor social media and flag accounts of events similar in nature to SCP-XXXX. Posters are to be given Class-C amnestics if determined by Lead Researcher Chen to exhibit signs of an encounter, or if they have shared a reproduction in line with SCP-XXXX-1.
Mentions of SCP-XXXX-1, reproductions, and memories need not be erased. Amnestics and erasure protocols should be targeted at anomalous encounters with SCP-XXXX itself. Operation 740-Deacon is currently underway to incorporate SCP-XXXX-1 into popular media in order to cause affected citizens to rationalize away encounters.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a phenomenon in which a melody with no discernable audio source will play to a single person. Subjects usually report encountering the phenomenon while attempting to fall asleep, and the sound is inaudible to all other persons in the vicinity. The 18 second melody itself, known as SCP-XXXX-1, is consistent among all occurrences. It can be reproduced with pinpoint accuracy, however, reproductions of SCP-XXXX-1 do not show any anomalous effects when played back to subjects.
The criteria that determine when and to who SCP-XXXX is encountered are not fully understood, but some consistencies have been found. Subjects who encounter SCP-XXXX often report being in a point in their lives they would describe as "low". Scenarios in which reported instances have occured include:
- Separation from partner
- Divorce of parents
- Grief and mourning
- Suicidal thoughts
- Academic struggles
- Financial issues
- Eviction
Subjects report having felt comforted by the tune and quickly falling asleep. Once they awaken, the subject undergoes a personality change involving an instilled sense of optimism and perseverance. Subjects affected by depressive disorders, while not cured, show a remarkable improvement in overall mental health.
Interview log 740-J
Date: February 23, 2012
Subject: Eva Stinson, age 31
Time since encounter: Eighteen months
Interviewer: Lucy Chen, lead researcher
[BEGIN LOG]
Subject was brought to Site-██ by Foundation personnel. Stinson had posted on an internet forum regarding her experience. A musician in college, Stinson was able to reproduce the score of SCP-XXXX-1 on said post. She agreed to an interview before amnestics were administered.
Chen: It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Ms. Stinson.
Stinson: Likewise. You wanted to know about- that song, yeah?
Chen: Indeed. Would you mind telling us a little about your experience?
Stinson: Yeah, yeah sure. Uh, I mean- tell you the truth, I think I might've dreamt it. You're sure this is something all that interesting to you folks?
Chen: I assure you that it is. Could you tell us about what it was like?
Stinson: Well, I was trying to fall asleep. I was a little- bothered, I guess, so I was having a little trouble. And then, just outta nowhere, I heard this melody. It sounded like- like piano, on some old recording. Joel1 couldn't hear it.
Chen: Uh huh. And you never found a source? Perhaps a neighbor playing a record?
Stinson: No, no way. They were out of town. And hell, even if they weren't, it was so close. Like it was in my room.
Stinson pauses for a moment.
Stinson: If- if there was a source, I didn't go looking for it. For some reason or another it just felt- nice. Comforting. I didn't feel so bothered anymore, so I went to sleep.
Chen: I see. Would you mind telling me why you felt so bothered?
Stinson: I- well, I had lost my job. Some stupid execs made some stupid budget choices so they had to make some layoffs. I was just, lost. I wanted to give up.
Chen: Did your attitude change at all?
Stinson: I was stupid, was all. I know better than to think like that. I picked my ass up, I got looking for a job again.
Chen: Were you successful?
Stinson: Not at first. But I just kept- thinking. About that night, about that song. I kept trying, I kept going.
Chen: Yes?
Stinson: I wrote down the song, trying to get some closure on it. And around then, that's when I decided to finally use my stupid BFA. Went down to my old high school and what do you know? They had an opening for a music teacher.
Chen: I see. I think that'll do for now. Thank you for your time, Ms. Stinson.
[END LOG]
Following the interview, Stinson was administered Class-C amnestics targeted at her encounter and Foundation intervention. The forum post detailing her encounter, along with the three attached comments, was deleted.
Addendum XXXX-α:
The earliest dated production of SCP-XXXX-1 known to the Foundation was located on a cassette tape in the Memorial Arts Library in ██████, AZ. The library archive reports the tape coming into their possession in August of 1985, donated by regular tenant and local musician Elliot Robinson. The following Polaroid image was found taped on the case.
