| SCP-XXXX at its full size |
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid Neutralized
Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-XXXX cannot be contained by any currently known means due to the fact that it moves every time a full moon occurs. SCP-XXXX does this by dying and eroding where it was originally and sprouting up again in another location. The exact means of transportation is unknown at this time. After the transfer occurs, it may take anywhere from 22 hours to 7 days to grow back to its original size depending on how severe the weather is at the time. After it reaches this size, it stops growing altogether until it moves again.
Though the subject can’t be reliably located or contained, it has been found that SCP-XXXX never leaves the area in the Western section of the Atlantic Ocean known as the Bermuda Triangle. Due to this fact, Foundation personnel will redirect any sea- or aircraft attempting to enter the Triangle's borders wherever possible. Those that do enter the range of SCP-XXXX and escape alive are detained and given Class-A amnestics.
Description:
The SCP appears to be a colony of yellow elkhorn coral. There is no constant size of the SCP because of how it moves every moon cycle. However, it’s maximum size is approximately 3m wide, and 2m tall.
SCP-XXXX affects the wildlife within a 3 kilometer radius, causing it to become extremely aggressive toward any foreign entities that enter this area. The organisms affected are labelled SCP-XXXX-1. SCP-XXXX-1 will protect the coral by any means necessary within their ability, even if it ultimately results in their demise.
SCP-XXXX-1 instances are any organisms that are within the 3km area of effect of the coral when it appears. These entities include anything from sea slugs, to sharks, to birds flying overhead, but does not affect adjacent coral polyps in any way. The SCP-XXXX-1 instances have enhanced speed, strength, and regeneration abilities. They also increase in size. All abilities mentioned vary depending on their proximity to SCP-XXXX. Organisms that are closest to SCP-XXXX(within 10 meters) when it appears will become instances of SCP-XXXX-2, which grow to enormously large proportions and can live for hundreds to potentially thousands of years. These instances are much larger than the lesser SCP-XXXX-1 subjects, being capable of reaching from 250m to 500m long.
When foreign entities enter the vicinity of SCP-XXXX, all organisms affected by the SCP will aggressively charge at them and will not disengage until the invader is outside of the 3km range of the coral colony or deceased.
This audio log was recorded from an operation to identify and investigate SCP-XXXX when Foundation personnel had first heard reports of a probable cause of the Bermuda Triangle mysteries. MTF Gamma-6 “Deep Feeders” was dispatched to investigate these rumors.
-START AUDIO LOG-
WIP - Something about the boat rocking when nearing SCP-XXXX and hearing banging on the hull. When the divers get in, they immediately leave the 3 km radius because of the SCP-XXXX-1s and (if they get close enough)SCP-XXXX-2s and observe from a distance.
(I'll put this in the correct format once I have the dialogue fleshed out a bit)
Name ideas (will only choose some of these): Basik, Ross, Poff, Bradshaw, Avren, Benton, Daveys, Favillo, Barlow
-END AUDIO LOG-
As of ██/██/██35, SCP-XXXX has been noticeably less potent than it used to be for the past 12 weeks, and has not been growing to its maximum size for the same amount of time. As a result, instances of SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2 have also been observed to be noticeably weaker than the previous ones.
Observations show that SCP-XXXX appears to be stressed as is apparent by the bleaching occurring at the tips of the branches in a manner consistent with that of normal coral colonies. The exact cause of this has not been determined at this time, but it is hypothesized that the rising acidity of the ocean and increase in temperature over the past decades has had the same effect on the subject as it does on normal coral reefs.
Additionally, coral colonies and reefs around the world seem to be reacting in the same manner and rate as SCP-XXXX even if they had not previously been showing these symptoms. There is a possibility that if the subject is neutralized, it will mean the extinction of coral altogether.
On ██/██/██36 SCP-XXXX perished, along with all coral species around the world. All coral reefs and colonies became fully bleached, expired, and eroded into sand. The only monument to this extinction is the sole skeleton of SCP-XXXX.
The impact of the death of all coral is devastating for oceanic life and seaside communities. Due to the fact that more than 25% of all sea life lived, depended, and/or reproduced on coral reefs, the organisms have been forced to find a new shelter and food source, or die. Marine food webs irreversibly collapsed, leading to the death of the majority of sea life and some land life that depended on the ocean life as a food source. The seaside economy is suffering due to fishing hauls yielding next to no fish, and many people are starving and impoverished from losing their main source of food and income.
The creation of new instances of SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2 has ceased to occur. The SCP-XXXX-1 instances remain the same size, but lose their aggression and regenerative abilities, so the majority of them also die with the rest of the sea creatures. Instances of SCP-XXXX-2 retained their abilities, but have retreated to the deepest parts of the Triangle, still occasionally attacking marine vessels when they stray into its range, but mostly remaining dormant and unseen.
