Item #: SCP-XXXX - “The Fortune Teller”
SCP-XXXX in folded state, being held by Dr. Goldsberry.
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be kept in a locked, safe-deposit box, at the Site-██ Item Storage Facility. It is crucial that the box is checked for the presence of SCP-XXXX at least once a week, and at least one guard is assigned to it at all times. SCP-XXXX should be folded fully at all times during containment, and be places inside a tightly-sealed, standard sized (110mm by 220mm) envelope. Testing with SCP-XXXX may only be approved for testing by researchers with Security Clearance Level 3 or above.
Description: SCP-XXXX seems to represent a popular fortune telling origami toy, often used by young children, seen in most parts of the world. The sheet from which the toy was made seems to be a sheet of 21cm by 21 cm paper, with no anomalous properties of its own, believed to originally have been cut from a standard A4 sheet .This was deducted due to a singular more jagged edge to the base sheet, suggesting that the page was either cut or ripped with great precision. On the outside, the toy appears to have four main square shaped areas, each colored crudely with a different shade: These being red, blue, yellow and green. Once opened, numbers from 1 – 8 can be found, with a 'fortune' found upon opening each of the numbers. Below are listed all fortunes noted:
SCP-XXXX unfolded with all fortunes visible.
- Great fortune awaits you
- Your biggest wish will come true
- You'll get very lucky
- You'll get a pet
- The world ends today !!!
- You'll become famous
- You'll get in an awful accident
- Your heart will be stolen today
When read aloud, written down, or presented in any way shape or form, the fortunes have no effect. However, when the game is performed properly, by two people, fortunes seem to come true. This can be performed by following the following instructions exactly;
- Firstly, the first person must present the second with the toy and ask them to choose a color. Upon doing this, the first person must spell out the chosen color while switching from one set of numbers to the other between each letter.
- Once done, the first person must present the second with the numbers that were chosen.
- The second person must then say one of the numbers visible aloud, and the first must count it down, once more interchanging the numbers.
- Finally, the second person must choose one of the numbers visible, and the first must read the fortune out, aloud.
If at any point do the two persons deviate from the above procedure, the anomalous effects will not manifest. Saying a number not visible in front of the subject, saying or spelling out a color not visible on the outside of the toy, saying a fortune not written down or twisting the words, etc, will completely cancel out the effects of the toy. If all of the above is done properly, the fortune read aloud will occur in real time, usually affecting both subjects. The fortunes seem to vary depending on the subject's state of mind. Pessimists and optimists have been seen to perceive the fortunes differently, therefore affecting outcome. Other factors such as gender, age, personality, etc, also seem to affect the results, but not as much as the above. The effects of the fortunes do not seem to fade over time and are completely permanent.
Initial Containment: SCP-XXXX first became an interest of the foundation's after an incident in █████, California involving the death of three eleven year old girls in a seemingly anomalous event. The three were hit by a car which disappeared shortly after making it down two more streets from the place of incident, which caught the foundation's attention. The only object of interest found at the scene was the fortune toy, along with a shocked, eleven year old girl by the name of ████ ██████ holding it. After a few tests the toy was confirmed to be anomalous, while the girl was cleared of any connection to the properties of the item.
Addendum XXXX-1: It has been confirmed from initial tests that personalities and individual traits of test subjects affect the outcome of the procedures. Below logs of all testing conducted with SCP-XXXX can be found.
