Special Containment Procedures: Due to the location of the object, containment procedures have proven to be difficult. At the time of this file's entry, various infra-red, x-ray, and radiation readings taken by the lunar orbital satellite Kalipso have indicated that SCP XXXX is currently in an inactive state. Foundation researchers have proposed future lunar expeditions to be taken so as to determine the official state of SCP XXXX.
Until such time that another exploration mission can be initiated, the O-5 council has determined that SCP XXXX is to be kept under constant observation by Site 56, an astronomical observatory based in [REDACTED], United States. Site 56 is equipped with the latest in astrological equipment and technology such as a high powered radio telescope, and an advanced computer system that is linked to the Foundation satellite Kalipso, currently in orbit around the moon.
The Foundation Satellite Kalipso is equipped with a high powered telescope and is capable of taking high definition pictures of the object's exterior located within the Sharonov Crater. Kalipso will routinely survey the surface area of SCP XXXX and take measurements of all thermal, electromagnetic, and gamma radiation emanating from the object. Should any change within SCP XXXX be detected, Site 56 personnel will initiate Protocol Cosmic Regicide, upon which Kalipso will launch its entire pay load of six W80 nuclear warheads directly at SCP XXXX.
Currently, there are talks of putting together a new lunar exploratory team to examine the remains of the underground structure and determine whether or not it is still functional.
Description: SCP X is an underground complex located beneath the Sharonov lunar crater on the far side of the moon. The complex itself extends several hundreds of miles deep into the moon’s mantle and may well extend into its core. Exact estimates as to the structure’s size are impossible as it was destroyed by an underground thermonuclear explosion following its antimatter reactor being breached. Upon examining footage taken from the Lunar Expeditionary Team’s numerous video logs, as well as thermal and x-ray scans taken by various Foundation lunar probes, researchers estimate the structure was once the size of the state of Texas.
The initial investigation of the complex carried out by the Foundation Lunar Expeditionary Team Alpha revealed the structure was once a singular mechanism; an advanced computer system equipped with a powerful Artificial Intelligence. The Team was able to ascertain the true nature of SCP XXXX mainly through their interactions with SCP XXXX-1, a human cyborg created from the remains of the former Dr. Edward Altair, the leader of the Artemis Lunar Team and the man who first discovered SCP XXXX. SCP XXXX-1 WAS created as avatar for SCP XXXX to interact with the Foundation Lunar Team. It was through their interactions and interviews of SCP XXXX-1 that the team was able to uncover information and intelligence relating to the origins of SCP XXXX.
According to SCP XXXX-1 the complex was built approximately 200 million years ago by an extinct humanoid race it referred to as the "Daedalites." Carbon dating of several metal samples taken by the expeditionary team corroborates SCP XXXX-1's testimony.
Further testimony from SCP XXXX-1 indicates that SCP XXXX was built to run every aspect of Daedalite civilization. The Daedalites automated nearly every facet of their society with SCP XXXX acting as the central operating system, its original function. Later, the Daedalites repurposed SCP XXXX to serve a different purpose; to contain a hostile primeval entity designated as SCP XXXX-2, referred to by the Daedalites as "Keres, the Mother of Nightmares."
In the 4 years following the initial discovery of SCP XXXX, foundation archaeologists have uncovered numerous sites on three major continents; North and South America, and West Africa. Among the artifacts uncovered where thousands of religious texts and historical documents which refereed to a mythological entity that is identical to that of SCP XXXX-2. Discovery: SCP XXXX was first discovered on March 3, 2044 by the Artemis Lunar Team, a joint NATO lunar exploratory team whose mission it was to establish the first lunar colony. The Artemis Team was composed of a hundred astronauts and colonists, led by veteran astronaut Captain Edward Altair. 3 months prior to discovery, the Artemis mission had already set up an enclosed habitat designated as Cypress 1, based in the moon’s Mare Imbrium region.
At some point the crew detected a radio signal originating on the far side of the moon, later pinpointed to the Sharonov Crater. After relaying their discovery to NATO Lunar Command on earth, the Artemis crew put together a five man exploratory team, led by Captain Altair, to investigate the source of the signal.
Upon arriving at the crater, they discovered a large domed structure located in the south western portion of the crater. Upon discovering the structure, Cypress 1 lost contact with Altair and his exploratory team. Before communication with Altair’s team ceased, video footage being broadcast from their suits' internal camera system revealed that the team was attacked by some unidentifiable entity or force (See Addendum 2). Approximately one hour later, that same entity attacked the Cypress 1 Habitat. Following this attack all communications from Cypress 1 to NATO Lunar Command was lost.

Following this incident, NATO Lunar Command ceased all lunar missions and enacted a total information black out at the behest of the Foundation. At the command of the 0-5 council, a secondary exploratory team would be sent to investigate the anomalous object designated as SCP XXXX discovered in the Sharonov Lunar crater and ascertain the whereabouts of the initial Pegasus Crew.
Foundation Lunar Exploratory Team Alpha
Codename: Verne’s Voyagers
Mission Statement: Lunar Exploratory Team Alpha is tasked with three mission objectives.
1. The investigation and intelligence gathering of SCP XXXX
2. Investigation into the possible whereabouts of the Pegasus Mission crew.
3. To ascertain the whereabouts of Dr Edward Altari and his crew.
The first mission objective is Exploratory team Alpha’s number 1 priority. Lunar Exploratory Team Alpha comprises 11 crew members.
Mission Procedures: Lunar Exploratory Team Alpha will take a 7 day journey to the moon onboard the Pegasus Lunar Shuttle. Once the Pegasus reaches synchronicitous orbit with the moon, the crew will split into two teams, designated Team A and Team B. Both teams will board the Lunar Module Bellerophon and land in the Mare Imbrium, where the Cypress 1 habitat is located. They will investigate the Cypress 1 facility and rescue any survivors should they encounter them. From this point, Cypress 1 will operate as a base of operations for the remainder of the mission. Once communication is reestablished with Foundation Command, Team B will set out to Sharanov’s crater and investigate SCP XXXX and the whereabouts of Dr Altair and his exploratory team.

Excerpt from Archaeological Investigations into the Rise and Decline of the Cult of Keres
Thanks to the efforts of the foundation’s linguistic experts, we’re better able to understand how such a long lasting religion such as the Cult of Keres could be so thoroughly discarded by Daedalite society. To better understand how profound this cultural shift was, one must look to the earliest part of Daedalite history, a time in which their society was first becoming unified and the figure of Keres held in keeping this emerging civilization in one piece.
Early in its history, the Daedalites were a collection of squabbling kingdoms and city states, conniving and struggling with each other for control of territory and access to resources. This period of incessant warring and fighting was finally put to an end when one kingdom rose to dominate the rest. The name of this Kingdom was lost to the time as many of the recorded histories of this legendary kingdom were written by historians many thousands of years later. All that is known, is that the spread of the Cult of Keres is associated with the rise of this kingdom. The rulers of this kingdom were priest-kings claiming to be the earth-bound representative of Keres.
The accuracy of these historical treaties is highly contested as it is impossible to separate fact from mythology. What is known is that the religious figure of Keres was instrumental in keeping this newly formed empire together. In most of the ancient texts we found, the Goddess Keres was depicted as a creature of mystery, a night goddess. She was described as an unspeakably beautiful Goddess but also a violent and temperamental one. Some of our researchers claim that the volatile character of this prehistoric goddess most likely reflects the experiences and perceptions of the early Daedalites. For the Daedalians, she is the great mystery, a microcosm of a universe so vast and immense it will forever be beyond their comprehension. She represents that which can never be known. One can see why such a deity proved useful to bring hundreds of rivaling kingdoms under one banner. She is the ideal hobbesian deity; the proverbial leviathan that kept all the lesser kingdoms and their conniving rulers in line. Under the rule of the Cult of Keres, the Daedalites lived both in awe and fear of this goddess thus allowing this new empire to remain sanguine for several hundred thousand years.
With the Cult of Keres coming to rule the empire, Daedalite Civilization effectively became a theocratic monarchy, with the descendants of the Keresian Priest-Kings who founded the kingdom acting as it’s royal family. As a result Keres forever came to be associated with this ruling family and this monarchical regime remained intact for thousands of years until Daedalite society faced an unprecedented crisis; the emergence of anomalous entities. In encountering these entities and other assorted preternatural forces, it proved to be too much for the Empire to handle, at least at its present state. At one point, the reigning monarchs realised, if Daedalite civilization was to combat the threats of these anomalous objects, it had to do away with the archaic and decrepit feudal system in which a handful of nobles squandered the Empire’s wealth in favor of more efficient and centralized state that could martial the resources necessary to develop the science and technology needed to combat these anomalous threats.
This led to a kind of revolution from above in which Daedalite society was transformed into a more modern society. The new system began investing in heavy industry, and production. allowing for the development of technology and science capable of combating or containing these various anomalous threats. Unbeknownst to the ruling family and their regime, it also led to a tectonic social revolution in their culture.
More of the Daedalite population migrated from the argarain territories of the empire and into the burgeoning urban metropolises. Across Daedalite society, the people get a taste of the more urban and cosmopolitan cultures that spring up in these urban centers. Having tasted modernity, this prompts a kind of cultural and political awakening in the Daedalus people. Where they were once feudal peasants sheepishly obeying the whims of their lords and masters, not they were citizens in a burgeoning society. A demand for universal suffrage began to unfold and this in turn led to a conflict arising between the ruling monarchy and the citizenry. The people came to resent the monarchy and their allied classes seeing them as an old ossified institution that was holding their society back from reaching greater heights. This resentment by the masses toward the monarchy’s dated and regressive ways culminating in a cataclysmic revolution that was so destructive and world rending, one can only compare to similar such events in human history such as the French Revolution or China’s Great Leap Forward.
It was a complete upturning of society. For so long, the vast multitudes of the Daedalite society had lived under the thrall of this decrepit monarchy that when they finally were overthrown, the populace defaced and destroyed all landmarks and cultural sites that exemplified the regime. They also defaced and decimated all the temples and religious sites dedicated to Keres as it was closely linked with that of the old order; of all things old, outdated, and undemocratic. This revolution against the Daedalite Monarchy and by extension, the Cult of Keres finally marked the beginning of a new era in Daedalite history.
During this time, the Daedalite civilization saw a rapid scientific and technological development. Within mere decades of the Great Revolution, the Daedalites discovered the atom, began developing what could be considered early digital and computing technology and even began dabbling in genetic and biological engineering. Their civilization took off like a rocket. The Daedalites managed to expand their nation even further and came to conquer the entirety of earth. During this time, the Cult of Keres was greatly diminished although not entirely forgotten. There were those who continued to worship at the altar of the night goddess but by and large, her cult was supplanted. She had become something of an obscure and outdated religious figure. One can even see a stark change in the historical texts produced during this period. Gone were the days where Keres was spoken of with fear and reverence. Now, she was referred to as another miscellaneous mythological figure; a literary curiosity and nothing more.
